Cams have been discussed a LOT on this site:

http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=14557&forum=40&20

has all the links.

In summary, Friends are cams. Friends are a single axle cam, Camalots are a double axle cam. The double axle gives slightly better range (although not as much as many people say - check out the numbers for yourself) but are a LOT heavier.

Good luck!

Fishy.
