I'm just now starting out, and to familiarize you with my situation, I live in a town with two restaurants and no grocery store to speak of. The nearest rock gym is a couple hours away, and between this and that, I never find time to get over there to the once a month lessons. So, I'm looking for tips on EVERYthing to get me started, so when I DO finally get over there, I know as much as possible. Anything and everything will help. Thanks. Check out the beginners forum. Lot's of topics covering what you are asking for. Once you find something that you may need some elaboration on, you can post a question on it. It would also help if your profile stated where you are located. There are several climbers on this site that may be willing to take you under their wing if you are located in the area. That is the best help you could get.

go to a store on the web and pick up a beginning climbers book. It will have all the stuff you need to know to start off.

Go to rei.com and click on "learn and share". This is a knowledge base that deals with all kinds of outdoor pursuits, as well as a lot of climbing info! I hope this helps, Jeff

I suggest you get ahold of (beg, steal, buy, borrow) this book: Mountaineering:Freedom of the Hills I know Barnes & Noble has it. Lots of online stores as well... A.W.

Good idea for books that I recently discovered. Libraries. My college library has tons and tons and tons of mountaineering and rock climbing books. I was amazed. I just looked for fun, stayed there for quite a while reading. Check out your local libraries, might be worth your time.

Lacie, Click on Articles at the top of the RC.com home page. There are numerous articles listed. The last 3 articles on the page will probably be the most helpful. Also, check out the others on Helmets, etc. Good reading to get you started. Is there any rock to climb in Florida? As previously mentioned, get some beginners books at the bookstore or library. Climb safe, Kathy

Hey Lacie, Welcome to the group and to the challenges of climbing Florida. I have to admit I've been all around most of Florida but I had to look up Mayo. Looks like you're equal distance from Tall, Jax and Gaines., all of them have gyms. When I just got started I got a book, which I still refer to from time to time, Rock Clmbing a Trailside guide. Lots of nice pictures and illustrations, easy to understand. But I have to strongly, strongly, strongly sugest you have someone who knows what they are doing go over any of the climbing techniques before you try them yourself. I consider myself an intermediate climber and before I try anything new, go over it with someone who knows and preferably try it out in the gym. Have fun and if you're ever down south, give me a buzz and we'll climb together.

First of all, you need to get out of Florida. Move to the mountains. But if you can't, make yourself a hanging board. Then you act like a monkey in front of all your friends... Let me know when you get to the mountains. Snake

make sure you read up on the "spider" rappel in the back of the "trailside guide"; i use this system every day and even though it takes a little extra time and people sometimes laugh at it, it's totally safe and idiot proof and it WORKS
