I once spotted someone at a crag that vaguely resembled Edmund Hillary with a sherpa. It wasn't cold and snowing so I'm not sure.

Edward Whymper on the Matterhorn. I was on the side of the rope where four of us fell to our deaths. I was later reincarnated as a wasp and was living an idyllic life high on El Cap, but Warren Harding thought I was in the way of his Nose route and sent me and my friends to our maker. Later I was reincarnated as a hop plant, but was harvested for beer and John Sherman got ahold of me. In my most recent life I have been living as a devil-may-care connoisseur of flavored Cheerios and screw top Slim Fast shakes. This renewed interest in taking care of my body has resulted in me climbing with Chris Sharma. Here's a picture of me and Chris: That's me, third from the left and two rows back on the upper balcony. Well, I was there but then I had to go to the bathroom, but I was that close to him.

Last two climbers I climbed with were Jim Donnini and Jack Tackle in Tetons and these guys are awesome. Hopefully we are going to do FA next year but I can't talk about it here. I also had dinner with yvon chaunard, chat with Dean potter and few other people here and there and climbed with few famous sherpas in Himalayas who were part of the David Breashears IMAX Everest movie crew few years back.ohh yaa, I ran in to Conrad Anckor on Tetons as well but you guys do not think he is that famous.just kidding,Ron Kauk is cool dude.

The climbing world is small. If you participate for a while you will meet many climbers that are published about. In passing or actually have conversations and occasionally maybe do some climbing together. Especially if you hang out in a few of the places most serious climbers eventually go. I can't think of a single notable climber I have met who wasn't friendly and interesting to talk to when I have had the chance. And the few I have climbed with I had good experiences.

Here are my most memorable 'Star Struck' moments. I used to climb with Mike Reardon all the time (if you count getting lapped multiple times in a row at Tahquitz). John Gill gave me a spot at Mt. Woodson a while back. I wrote him off as crazy when he told me he had 'invented' chalk... Willie Benegas freed my 'fixed cam' (according to my partner) on the first pitch of Open Book and returned it to me 20 minutes later on top.

Did an FA in noiZ with God...but I never really saw him. But he was there, because every pitch my buddy lead he talked to God the whole time..."God, that placement sucks! God this pitch iz dirty! God, I'm outta Gear! God, send up the drill!"

In 1978, I tried Clever Lever in Eldorado Canyon, while Pat Ament watched me (while drinking beer and shouting beta). In 1980, I climbed with Wolfgang Gullich for two weeks in Eldorado Canyon. He was on a mission to climb all of the 5.12s. In 1982, I had a cool bouldering sesh with Wolfgang and John Bachar on the Camp 4 boulders. In 1984 or so I climbed with John Sherman in Yosemite (Crack a Go-go and Separate Reality). In 1992, I shared a belay on the Nose with Hans Florine and Peter Croft while they achieved their landmark ascent in 4:22. In 1995, I shared a bivy up on Half Dome with Todd Skinner. In 2006, Henry Barber came to our Quartz Mountain Gathering and although I didn't share a rope with him, I climbed nearby and yakked with him for a couple of days.

Bouldered with Leo Houlding in Huaraz after meeting him and his mates in The Thai restaurant the night before. This was in 2000, and I think I remember Leo bragging about how he had turned 18 that day. needless to say I couldn't get off the ground on his warmup problems. I did howevere drink more beer than he did that night in El Tambo.

Better than that... Ever seen Mike Call's vid "Best of the West"? The problem is Doggie Jump, there's even a try of me throwing for the lip. Chris was working "Filet Mignon" nearby which is also in the vid. As far as Chris posting... He reads your posts and if he posts he won't reveal who he is, as far as I know your Chris. lol, but I doubt it, he's not the type of person to mess with people from what I remember. If you really want to ask Chris some serious questions try looking up an email through one of his sponsors, Evolv perhaps? Maybe Prana. Send him a mail introducing yourself and throw him some questions. If he's bored on a rest day he may just return it. Chris is a cool dude, he'll likely want to hear as much about your climbing as you would like to hear of his.

About five years ago my partner had just come down off South Tower in the Needles SD and ran into Herb and Jan Conn. They were out for a hike so we didn't climb with them but we did chat with them for a while about their FA of the route we'd just done. Let's just say it was a tremendously humbling experiencing to hear about how Herb lead the climb with 60 feet of goldline, dime store sneakers, and a hand full of pitons placed only at the belay.

Have climbed with and/or bullshitted at the crag with Alex Puccio, Nick Duttle, Matt Segal, Russ Clune, Jay Smith, Micah Dash, Lisa Rands, Simon Carter, Monique Forestier, Jim Thornburg, Didier Berthoud, Fred Nicole, Jim Donini, Steve Petro, Lisa Gnade, Chris Siersant, Liv Sansoz, Arnaud Petit, Ethan Pringle, Cedar Wright, das Hubers. No posing though, he climbed the whole thing again in style. I on the other hand had to jug all the pitches.

Fred Beckey in the 90's. Backside of the chief. Marc Bourdon...high angle rigging course. Climbed with some old school partners of Peter Croft's when he was cutting his teeth in squamish in the 80's....but i never got to climg with Peter himself. Ran Kaulk lent some insight to me at camp 4 on Midnight Lightning....all though it was in vein lol. Nice guy though, for sure....but i will never be able to boulder that piece with or without Ron.lol. And i have rigged beside or been rigged by (for film) many of the Squamish legends; Dave Lane, Peter Ourum, Perry Beckham... yacked with...Peter Croft, Tammy Knight, Hamish Fraser, Robin Barley, Jim Sandford, Lynn Hill, Ron Kaulk

Wait for National Geographic in Feb 2012 to read about it.

I met Fred Beckey in Washington via a guy that had climbed with him and got his autograph for the record (not sure I still have it now mind). For me the most famous, as far as famous goes, was my trad lead guide who I completed my one day course with at Squamish.. he must be some what famous he's in the Squamish guide book for some of the first ascents on the Chief

It wasn't my problem, but it was called Doggie Jump. Wishbone is the steep line at the Bone Town wall at Homestead I bolted, you may have climbed it when you visited, I can't remember much more than you sending everything you tried on Slate Nation.

Anyone here ever climb with RGold?? I have :) Also climbed with Dick Williams, Rich Gottlieb, and Rich Romano. I guess I'm not really connected or something, but I either don't know what famous climbers look like, or I offend them at the cliff, because I have not climbed with anyone more famous than that. Oh wait...I take that back...I bouldered with Leo Houlding one afternoon outside Huaraz Peru back in 2001. Another totally zany person I've climbed with several times...probably not famous to anyone but a handful of northeast ice climbers...Joe Szot I've met and chatted with some famous climbers including Joe Simpson at a bar in Huaraz, John Bragg at the Gunks, Jim Shimberg, Rick Wilcox, Colin Haley, Lynn Hill, Bean Bowers, Matt Segal, Vince Anderson, Henry Barber I think Camhead has the most impressive list so far.

But then he got scared that I would onflash all of his testpiece local problems, and he bailed on me. Hmmm... I remember it somewhat differently. Then again (as has already been pointed out) I am getting old. In any event, I am officially designating "April Showers" as my favorite Gunks route, in memory of my visit there with you and the clamheads. Curt I guess my memory is not getting better with time, either... I thought it was Golden Showers, where we all ate dirt, while you patiently demonstrated that really, the start moves were so easy that they could be done is approach shoes? I am sure you can pick a few faves like that in Hueco-- want to try in march? Well personally, I'd prefer to check out some of that new JT bouldering. Hueco has lost much of its appeal for me with all the new regulatory BS there. Curt JT is definitely going on the list. But not for this march. Have fun and enjoy the mind numbing indoctrination video. By the way, you will never get those 30 minutes of your life back. Curt

Several famous people have climbed with me, but so far they have been too awestruck and modest to come on here and tell everyone!

What, just "UK"? Everyone else gets the exact area you climbed with them in but the UK is just "The UK"? Fuck you, man, we have feelings and distinct indentifiable climbing destinations too, you know.

He just mentioned some cool people he enjoyed climbing with and the place they climbed (yosemite, etc.) but then just said "UK" for one of them. If you're still there Mr dudebroman, you should come back. I didn't mean to scare you off

I very rarely post here, and decided to delete my post, since the whole thing is kind of foolish spraying. To be more explicit concerning Alex MacIntyre. It was over 40 years ago, that I climbed with him outside of Leeds, England, along with John Porter, and a few others. I visited quite a few areas, over several trips, so my memory is vague. Porter has written a book on Alex, Voytech Kurtyka, and others, which will be published in July.

Don't worry about jeff jim jonathan jack ceebo magnus. he just gets a bit worked up at times. he's probably not even voting SNP in the fall. he just wants some love that's all. in fact, sounds as if you might have some stories and he'd be down to hearing them. the dude has some stories himself, too.

Also there are enough nationalist and racist movements gaining momentum in the UK right now, I don't need to vote for another. Also, please don't tie SNP to the yes vote like I think you are. They are very different topics, and defining a party by a single policy that is being voted on separately is silly.

sungam, Porter was here in New Hampshire,(US), a few days ago, for a brief visit. He told me the name of the book, but I already forgot it, sorry. I will email him soon, and will let you know later. He told me that he was vice president of the Alpine Club, and suggested I join, since they offer free bunkhouse space in London. Do you live in England or Scotland?

I live up in sunny Edinburgh, Scotland (though if elections keep going the way they are, not for much longer since I'm a dirty unwelcome forner).

sungam, In 1970, I had a brief encounter with Don Whillans, up in Llanberis Pass. I remember it vividly, since I felt like such an ass. I was young and impressionable, and was sitting in the local pub or tea shop. I was with a guy from Manchester, Wilber King, who I still climb with. He lives in the Blue Mtns., outside Sydney. In any case, I whispered to Wilber, " do any of the famous climbers come in here". Wilber replied, " well Don Whillans is sitting right in front of you". The whole time Whillans was looking at me, only 6 feet away, with a scowl on his face. I felt so dumb! Jim Donini, an old friend of mine, told me a month ago, that when he was giving a lecture to the Alpine Club, many years ago, Don Whillans bought him a beer. Jim is quite proud of that since apparently Whillans rarely, if ever, bought anyone a beer. I guess this falls under climbing trivia tales.

Haha, that's great. I have a half-read and fully-lostcopy of The Villain laying around my flat somewhere that I should really find and finish. As for entertaining brushes with famous climbers, my climbing mentor was once climbing I believe at a gym somewhere near Sheffield as the weather had spoilt their plans of climbing in the peak for the day. Apparently his belayer knew John Dunne fairly well as he came up and said hello, then started up the line just to the right of them. After finishing the route, lowering off a nipping to the loo, my mentor came back just in time to hear John ask his partner "Who's that ripped 40 year old you're climbing with?" As a 29 year old he wasn't really sure how happy he was with the compliment to his physique.

I was amazed how well John Dunne climbed, considering how big a guy he was. My old partner, John Bouchard pointed that out to me, since he was pretty amazed as well.

I don't generally get to climb with famous climbers, and haven't been doing this long enough to climb with someone before they got famous, but I have climbed with one person who has, or should have, some reknown: Kame Sherpa - high Sierras, California.

A buddy and I were at J.T. circa late 80's and finished up on Bearded Cabbage (5.10) which was difficult for us. We were getting a big head over our accomplishment when we heard a noise below. Not hearing the banter of other climbers, or the clanking of pro we were unsure what the muffled noises were. John Bachar soloed up in back of us and gave a curt "Hey" as he continued on his way. We stalked him throughout the day and I (not knowing any better) asked him to pose with each of us by saying "We're just some East Coast jerks and would love it if we could get a picture with you". It must have been the right thing to say as I have the pose of he & I hanging in my pool room. I don't remember him saying anything that day except the initial "Hey" and an "OK" to my question about the pic.
