Hey gang,
I am an undergraduate Geography major (with an emphasis in
Cartography) in the Geosciences department at the University of
Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I am looking for some information
for my final project in my Computer Mapping class, which deals
primarily with the aesthetic design of thematic maps. I want to
design a map which shows, using sectored coins (basically pie graphs
overlaid on a map which shows data, divided into slices, of given
particular areas), comparisons of summit bids on the most popular
peaks in the Himalayas.
The data which I am looking for would involve ten to twelve Himalayan
peaks which see the most traffic in a given season (hopefully the most
reason season, but any available year data would be appreciated). I
will write the data which i need as a list for simplicity:
1. The total amount of persons which attempted to summit each peak.
2. The total amount of person which succeeded in each summit bid per peak.
3. The total amount of persons which retreated from each summit bid per peak.
4. The total amount of persons reported deceased during a summit bid per peak.
5. The total amount of persons reported missing during a summit bid per peak.
These data would hopefully include any Sherpa, as they seem to
sometimes be mis-represented in mountaineering data.
I'm not sure if this type of data is even available; I haven't found
anything during my Internet research and am turning to any of you for
assistance. can anyone point me in the right direction for this information? Or, if this information is not conclusively available, can anyone offer any
alternatives? i.e. data of this type which pertains to any other
popular mountaineering destination (Patagonia, Rocky Mountain National
Park, The Grand Tetons, or any other area which you think important). I have also emailed the American Alpine Club, hoping they might have something for me.
Any information would be so appreciated.

Hi Jamma,
I would hope that the AAC gave you some guidance on this matter, but climbers in the the Himalaya would have to go through a permitting process so that would be your source for attempts. Whether they (governmental agency) would keep specific records as to the various outcomes you indicated I know not. The AAC should be able to give you contact info. for permitting authorities in say Nepal or Tibet. Good luck ! Sounds like an interesting project.

Your best source for this type of information is going to be the National park service. Stick with some peaks in the US and you will have a much easier time. The NPS logs all of this info. Start with...
Rainier NP
Denali NP - This info is all on their website Look for it.
Grand teton NP
I am sure there are others but I am not doing your project you are so look around.
