Hey everyone, I've noticed on my recent backpacking trips that NO ONE practices Leave No Trace. Fire rings,trash, sawed off branches, anucshucks and much more. Does this sort of stuff bother you when backpacking and climbing in the backcountry? Do you do your best to practice leave no trace?

Are you climbing in the backcountry? Or are you actually in front country (as this post makes it sound?)
I'm aware of many backcountry climbing opportunities, but they just aren't very popular.
Backpacking? Should be totally different, though you might still be in front country terrain. How many days out from the road do you go?

I totally agree with you, and it is frustrating that more people don't practice the leave no trace ethic. The best we can do is to practice it ourselves, and do our best to educate our friends (and other people if you're up for it.) We can also help by cleaning up after the disrespectful people as often as we can. It is critical to give the impression that climbers are a user group who care about keeping the outdoors as clean and natural as possible. This helps us to stay in favor with the rangers and landowners. There are always going to be people who don't respect the outdoors, but we should not be among them.

At one time it was practiced in climbing as well, but those days are long gone.

In my specifc example I was not climbing in the backcountry just backpacking. I just wanted to entail those who climb in the backcountry.
I was about 3 days out on my trip and I still saw this.

I always end up packing out more trash than I brought in.
That's about the best I can do, I figure.

I learned to climb, and did a fair amount of backpacking, in North Carolina. For the most part I think the LNT ethic is pretty good there. Compared to Europe, where I live now, it was amazing. Arguably getting to "back county" here is a bit more difficult, but the amount of trash in the climbing areas continues to surprise me after 3 years...

its a myth with climbers ... climbers will take dumps at crags, chop down trees for access, throw poop bags off walls, scrub rocks clean ... etc ...

Those are and were climbers who didn't practice LNT - many did and many crags had an LNT ethic.

Some places I go are better than others, I make sure I pick up and carry out my trash and pick up whatever else is out there that I can. Having a bunch of trash out there is horrible and I don't know how people can justify leaving their trash out there. If you could carry it out there, you can carry it back.
