Hi,
i am interested in climbing history. In particular, does anybody know a good website with information about how climbing gear and techniques evolved over the time?
For instance, i would like to know things like:
When had the first carabiners appeared?
And harnesses?
What about the evolution of the belaying techniques?
etc...

try finding a copy of James Ramsey Ullman's "The Age of Mountaineering": it covers the history of climbing from the earliest ascents on...Also, much of the development of climbing gear can be traced back to WWII when the military needed to use it for clandestine operations, after the war, there was a surplus of old army climbing gear that was cheap and got picked up by the aspiring climbers of the time. The next big development was dynamic rope and the pitons manufactured by John Salathe for climbing in Yosemite in the '60's. Next, Yvonne Choinard's stoppers & hexes encouraged "clean" climbing without so much piton bashing and then it was Ray Jardine's tun to revolutionize climbing by producing the Friend as the first practical spring loaded camming device.
