I posted this over on the rousing discussion in the injuries-treatment section over a heated debate about helmet caused injuries. I thought it might be better served here. What do you think?

We climb to "stare death in the face and scream our rage at the inevitability of it", mountaineers started wearing them, because some mountaineers where overly educated physics instructors and conservative by nature.

Sport climbers started wearing them because they were not as competent as the 'Trad climbers' of the day got scarred easily and thought 'they could be hurt'. Someone told them they could have 'fun' without committing to the challenge they had undertaken

Now, your mothers have taken over their job. When you were little it started with female hysteria her prodigy would not survive to procreate and spread her genes. So you were required to wear your helmets and safety protection for bicycles, skateboards, and roller skates.

Men, being men, did not take these precautions, for us it is about the activity (who cares if you are going to die, it is living an empty life that is the tragedy). Like sperm, that gets one shot, we take ours and the adrenalin rush that goes with it. That is why old climbers don't exist; we all embraced our angst and our activity as divine sport. What kind of man (climber) would give up that?

It is embracing that passion, not who is wearing a 'helmet' or why.

What are you talking about? Sometimes it is appropriate to wear a helmet (loose rock, etc...) sometimes it is not (sport climbing, single pitch trad, etc...). I may only have one shot at life, but I also do not want to get hit on the head with a rock. I am just not into that.

I beg to differ on that one..

I mean There some up sides to getting hit on the head with a huge stone... If you had a crappy week... boom you forgot it, you get a cool scar...

The scary part is if that concussion starts causing frequent lose of memories.. than you need to start tattoing all the important stuff on you... like...

What was I talking about?

Icy, WTF... where am I :), Frosty

There, I fixed that for you.

I climb to get outside in the beauty of nature, to see this beauty from a perspective that many people never will, and to stay active and healthy. That is the reason that I climb.

And wearing a helmet or not is totally climb and rock type dependent.

for me...it goes hand in hand with being outdoors. Camping, hiking, climbing, fishing, swimming...all outdoor activities I enjoy partaking in and can usually do most if not all in the same general area, and you can't beat the cool scars you get!

Being outdoors, meeting great people, spending time with partners that I love, sending something that I thought I couldn't are all great, but the reality is that I climb simply to climb. It makes no difference whether I make it to the top, or fall off as long as I climb. Climbing is life.

I climb because it's fun. I also find it really relaxing. When I'm bouldering, I can just turn up my music and be in my own little world. :) I find it kind of meditative. There's no one else but me and the rock, even if it's just for a short minute. Every climber I've met thus far has been incredibly kind, laid back, and generally just fun to be around. I love the challenge of facing my fears (heights). Climbing has really helped me to conquer that. :D

I climb because I spent 1 year on 100mgs of methadone. I got clean on my own terms as the methadone clinics just want you to stay on the "program" to get your money. NE way I started feeling normal after 2 months clean and went climbing with my brother (we were both noobs) I replaced a deadly expensive addiction with a deadly expensive addiction but my climbing life is much more fulfilling. After I got confident in the gym I started climbing outside often and began to purchase gear, with in 6months of climbing in Arkansas I found myself climbing at the gunks on the so called 5.5-5.9, 2-3pitch "moderates" the major change in my life style and over heath is directly due to climbing. I have learned more about myself and life while in backcountry and while climbing than I could have learned from any job or schooling. The mental and physical strength gained from climbing is unmatched, I think even the cockiest, biggest ego on a rope can agree with that.

I climb because it's makes me feel free. It's the only time when I know that my next move, the next hold and the pro I place are the only things that REALLY matter. And I guess I just climb for the rock and because it's there, just waiting to be climbed.I remember that when I was little I used to go to the mountains on holiday with my parents and to this day I still think about that overwhelming feeling I had when I was first surrounded by those huge, sheer faces. And I always wondered how it would be to get up there and if they could be climbed(at that time I only did some light trekking with my parents).I just guess after all these years I got to answer part of those questions I had back then...
The only thing that makes me feel the same freedom and detachment from the world is flying sailplanes.

I guess that in the end what makes me climb and fly is being so concentrated on a single activity that I forget about everything else when I know death is just one mistake away.

And for the issues regarding death in activities such as climbing I remember a great quote I once read:

"It is one thing to be in the proximity of death, to know more or less what she is but it is quite another thing to seek her..."(think it's Hemingway but I'm not sure)

Anyway I guess I just need to get out and climb after I'm done with my final exams in Highschool(last year;I'm not climbing even near to as much or as hard as I would like to). This thread just sound like one of those AA meetings: "Hello,my name is _(insert name here)_ .I climb because..."

actually I climbed for the same reason I started racing boats. I AM an Adrenalin junkie and at least for now adrenalin made by your own body is still legal. The fact that looking up at the top of a bluff from the bottom gets hard on thy neck. only adds to the desire.
The I think Can get up to there is a major contributing factor
We all need challenges
I like cleaning off a 80 foot route in the spring.AH.. NO! thats one thing I am not fond of. But it does sure show you where the holds are LOL.
AM I nutz? AM I the only one that feels like when I am on a crag and am in the zone, at peace with my self and the earth. That the rock feeds me energy?
There is only one other group of sports nuts that compare to the climbing family and that is the hobby boat racing family.

I wouldn't equate my life to that of sperm... to spend life in dark warm moist places doesn't invoke much of a desire to climb...

It's more fun then not climbing.

I can't put it any better.

I started climbing in 1984, and I have never had a good answer to this question.

Secretly, I hope to become famous, land some big sponsorship contract, and retire on the interest the money earns. (Oh, climbing, not football.)Blush

I climb because I find the precision, control and strength required for each move to be beautiful. I like the feeling of flowing up a climb....making something that is difficult look effortless.

I climb because I need a way to release. When I was in the Corps, it was the war. Now that I'm retired, it's the rock.

I love that it's just me and the rock. Nothing else matters. The only thing I think about is that next move.

"The first question you will ask and which I must try to answer is this, 'what is the use of climbing Mount Everest ?' and my answer at once must be, 'It is no use'. There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron. We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be planted with crops to raise food. It's no use. So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for."-George Leigh Mallory

Can't much argue with that.

I think its hilarious how most people didn't really read this ^.
There is no question posed in the text, its just a bunch of crap on why we should or should not wear helmets.
So either this was a very successful troll, or everyone is just ignoring the op's retardedness.
On that note; I don't climb, I just lurk around RC posting stupid useless crap, but at least I wear my helmet.

It is so good to be a female. Since we cleared up that first part, drama club, lets get one thing straight. We stare death in the face just being alive. I spend enough time convincing my mother that I am not on a suicide mission when I rockclimb because I know what I am doing.

I climb for every reason...going to amazing places that not everyone gets to go to, the beautiful gear, the adventure, exploration...and deep down, because climbing is something that I work hard for and excel at and I like to do things I do well.

Does this mean you might all of a sudden realise it's not worth the effort to live? Climbing is depressing. I'm going to stop right now.

When I climb, I forget about everything, every little insecurity or anxiety goes away when I'm on the rock.

It is also a great way for me to try and surpass myself everyday, and strive to push the limits of my body to become the best climber I can possibly be with my god given abilities and strenghts.

In 24 years of climbing, I've been asked this question a lot... but I don't think I've ever really answered it. I've tried over and over again to do so, and have come up short every time.

I like the challenge of climbing, but there are times when I just want enjoy the view. I like exploring, but often, I'd rather know exactly what's over the next bulge or around the next buttress. I like the social aspects of it, but just as much, I seek out untraveled crags. I like the solitude, but can have a blast in a crowded gym, music blaring. I enjoy solving problems creatively, but sometimes, I just want to bum TR rides. I don't like to compete, but the success of my friends drives me to improve. Climbing is exciting, but it can also bore me to tears. I could say it's my sense of rugged individualism, but in today's climbing scene, that's a joke.

I suppose it could be the opposite -- I enjoy belonging to our tribe. I'd be lying if I said there wasn't some part of my psyche that simply enjoys being "a climber." But when I was a full-time guide I never told people that's what I did, and I still never bring up climbing in rooms full of non-climbers. It always sounds like a pick-up line, like I'm trying to impress.

Unless and until I figure it out, the answer is an unqualified shoulder shrug. Although, maybe hidden in my rambling, there's a reason. Climbing has given me so much, and if we're keeping score, I owe climbing much more than it owes me. My life is literally built around it. I met my wife climbing. We live at the New River Gorge to be close to climbing. Except for a few buddies from high school, every single one of my friends is a climber or has climbed. Maybe -- just maybe -- it's as simple as having my identity so wrapped up, in and around climbing, that not climbing is unthinkable.

Naw, that's not it.

People climb so they are prepared and able to escape to shelter when the T-Rex gets loose and attacks.

I started climbing since working at a gym looked like a sweet HS job and a great way to meet other stoners. Those were the good ol days.

I continued climbing to get over my fear of heights. I have found adrenaline to be the best drug out there, and the price is right.

Now I climb to get away from my life BS and get out in the woods to relax, and of course to maintain my over inflated ego because I climb and that makes me cooler/better/smarter than non climbers. (and all of you too since this is RC.com... you losers!)

I still keep an eye out for T-Rex, but now I am adequately prepared to escape when he attacks again.

I turned 31, and was like "I need mountains to climb". I said it figuratively but decided to take it literally.

Also, you can only watch so much TV in your free time...get up, get out!

And, my wife is pushing to have kids in another year or so. I realize that it's not a death sentence, but it has put me on notice to take on as many challenges and adventures I can find.

I'm afraid of heights, so for me I get more thrill out of it than someone who isn't.

I enjoy it!

I hear that. At one point in life, TR on a 50 foot cliff was even heady to me! But I love it since I get the same adrenaline cleaning a pitch as other people I know only get running out mank (which generally scares me more than my buddy). I get the same rush they do, with out the broken bones if I do happen to fall. On the ropeless side of life though, it's kinda funny I feel at home topping out a 15 foot V5 over a sketchy anklebreaking landing, but still shit myself sewing up a 5.3G at a few hunderd feet.

I believe the mountains were made for me to climb them.

But the rest of life is also important, I do not live to climb. Which is why I wear a helmet, which is why I lived past October 10, 2010, when I got hit in the head/shoulder by some good sized choss.

Lets just say that it's not a coincidence that there are rocks, and people that like to climb them. Just like there are oceans and people that like to sail etc. We were all born with a need to interact with nature in some way.

I climb because life is a bitch. Im a High School student, every day I go to school and get ground into the rug by the system and all its faults. I climb because high school chicks are bitches and the guys arent much better. I climb because I can try to relate to those around me, but itll never work cuz I know someday I will die on a cliff hundreds of miles away and they wont care. I climb because everything can go to shit and the rock will still be there.

I climb because I love the challenge, love the outdoors, I love that it is a very individual sport (the only one upset with me when I don't do as well as I could is me). I love how delicate moves can be, and how burly they can be. Some of the people I have met along the way have been incredibly interesting and inspiring.

I went to an Music and Art High School in New York like the Fame H.S for gifted artists. We had 5 periods of art, we painted, we did photography, arc welding, sculpture, wrote creative stories, science, math, language , drawing, silk-screening, fashion design. poetry, dance, music, . We had so much fun even though we had to go earlier and stay later. We all were tested only 10 percent got in . We all had the same qualifications and intelligence tests, portfolios. and interviews. It was very cool,
We would all go to concerts , get the best seats at madison square garden, It was free , so if you got into a gifted high school you didn't have to pay.

Do you go to college now? What are you studying? What is your career path? I can be a quasi career counselor , I'll try Happy now?

I climb because it makes me feel good. And probably it makes me feel good because there is something to reach. It's kind of a "the way is the goal" thing.

And if it's necessary (like outdoors) why shouldn't you wear a helmet? If you want to die or get seriously injured you can arrange that a lot easier. It's irresponsible. I have people I care for and who care for me - so - I am not having any kind of "laugh at the possibility of death need" or anything stupid like that.

I think the helmet thing should have it's own thread, which it probably already does, but I'm too lazy to find it. If you don't wear a helmet because you like to "laugh at the possibilty of death", why waste time bringing a rope and placing pro? It's not much effort to bring and wear a helmet, and it significantly increased safety while climbing. I would assume you must free solo everything, since placing pro and clipping a rope to it takes time all it does in increase your safety. If you use a rope, sounds like someone might be affraid of death by gravity.

People who climb so they can "laugh at death" tend to be sketchy partners. I don't think many climbers would want their partner to be indifferent to being dead by the end of the day. But since you must free solo everything helmetless, you don't have to worry about ever finding/keeping a partner.

There are many reasons why people don't wear helmets, so they can laugh at the possibility of death just seems to be a silly one. Most likely you are really laughing at the possibility of a TBI Unsure

If you have ever seen someone get blasted from 100' by a locker, you might understand why I wear a helmet.

I don't wear a helmet, mainly because I don't have one and I have a lot of other stuff I have to spend my money on but since I'm only TRing, bouldering, and sport climbing here in Texas the routes aren't long or all that sketchy (that I've climbed) so right now I think I'm ok with not having a helmet and having some other new gear instead.

The other part of the question why do I climb is harder to answer. I think the climbing community is really awesome, the dynamic between climbers is different from what I see in other sports. Like at CCS and ABS comps for example, my friend regularly places in the top 3 at CCS and usually the others in the top three are the same as well. Instead of being competitive about it what I've noticed is they all hang out with each other and climb together at the comps, what other sport is that cool where you make really good friends from all over the place.

The other thing I like is that everyone is so supportive on climbs even if they're way better than you. This past weekend we went to Reimer's and I started climbing Liposuction which I felt like I could probably do if I'd been regularly climbing all year but it was late in the evening and I was burned out and scared to death of the start but I started it anyway. about two moves in I wasn't feeling like I could finish it because of my forearms but I just hear people I didn't even know watching and yelling encouragement from the ground and it kept me going farther and even though I didn't make it to the top when I got down I got a lot of congratulations by people who had made that route look like a cake walk for them, it was just a really good feeling to me.

The sport also just seems more friendly to new people as well, I remember me and my friends first time outside at mineral wells, we went to set up the top rope anchor only to find that we didn't bring enough webbing but there was a guy climbing that loaned us some webbing and made sure we set it up right (though we'd read a ton of info and talked to people before we even headed out there about proper anchor setup) but it was really eye opening that other climbers cared about the safety of some newbies like us (though now in retrospect he probably just didn't want us to get hurt then the park close down the climbing but I like to look at it the other way haha.)

I love being outside and pushing myself to do things I never would do normally, thats why I even attempted liposuction knowing it was a little above my level. The camaraderie and being outdoors is just a irreplaceable feeling to me, plus who could forget any of the awesome after climb camping nights that go with all that just sitting by the campfire and enjoying life.

I climb because it is an end unto itself. It's hard not to be in the moment. It's physical, it's exciting, it's difficult and rewarding.

Because it is my "high". Stimulates dopamine ad seratonin production. Helps with depression, anxiety and is overall a very healthy thing to do. I am healthier now at 40 than I was when I was 19. I can do a one arm and win bets at parties, while most others are abdominly obese and stoned. It helps me stay focused in life. Its something I can do with my wife that we are both pationate about. Its something I can do with my future son/daughter. I can put a cool "Petzl" sticker on the back of my Toyota and not be a pozer! :) It allows for travel to really cool places and to meat other people who are generally down to earth and very healthy. Compared to bars where "other" sports meet. The Crags and campsite pints are far more enjoyable. Need I say anymore... I could go on and on! Cool

You have made a solid point about the risks and embracing it as such.

I climb so that I can see the same view of the mountain from where the Golden eagle sits.
I climb because I feel more in touch with the rawness of mother nature.
I climb because it makes me smile.
