yea I was just looking at a 1986 climbing mag, the tights, the colors! I remember my friends wearing the same sh1z, trying to convince me how they helped you to climb better, and made for better pics. I never bought into it.

I'm looking at a pic of neil cannon leading a trad 5.13 crack, his had rigged with chewed up tape gloves, wearing a sleeveless black T and white-based lycra tights splashed w/ purples, pinks, greens and yellows. I don't know which took more kahoonies, leading the crack or sporting those threads.

Climbing, like many other activities, has its fashions. In the US we've had cycles of Army surplus, wool knickers, blue jeans, white painter's pants, lycra, Prana...think that what we're wearing today won't cause giggles to some fashion-aware kid in the future? That said, I agree that the old photos of men in bright lycra look funny today. I was sad when my wife retired hers, though.

I never climbed in the 80s but I'm all about the lycra but only because I'm to cheap to buy Prana and the like. I draw the line at neon though and I wear lycra shorts, not pants. Lycra is just soooo comfy!

In reply to: Lycra is just soooo comfy! I don't know about this one...I always feel like my stomach is pooching out and the legs are creeping up ....I just don't think it's too flattering. Maybe I'm just lucky that I live down the street from the Prana outlet...or that I hate Lycra...

Oh man, I've got photos of me leading all kinds of routes in the mid-80s wearing neon colored lycra. It was acceptable then--and I was young. But, now looking back....well....let's just say those pics will never see the light of day again. Egad. Curt
