I was digging around through stuff the other day and came across a 50 foot piece of old goldline rope. It was as stiff as ever and as tight as ever. I wonder if this stuff ever disintegrates?!?! Not that I have any plans to try and find out. I'll take my new perlon any day.
Wondering though--anybody else have some goldline, and what do you use it for?

Back in the day, 1980. The first rope was a olive drap mil spec goldline @ 120 ft.....got me in trouble sometimes cause of length...... :lol:

I just got my hands on several lengths of old goldline, part of the gear collection at my school . . . NO plans to climb on it, but it'll look good on display in my office with some of the other ancient gear. but this, too is stiff and new-feeling, if a bit dusty.

My dad still has his, 120' also. Sits right next to his old 9mm Chouinard half rope (he bought it for glacier travel, years ago). He's wanted to sell the goldline to collectors for years now.

I climbed on goldline for years, yes it's stiff, it never gets any softer, rapping on it was like rapping down a chain. It soaked up water and dirt like a sponge. When it froze, you didn't coil it, you folded it up.
You didn't just get rope burn from goldline, it took the skin with it (still have a scar). The friction was unbelievable.. it basically melted it's way through anything nylon that it ran across.
Trying to think of a good point here.. weight.. NO.. umm.. oh ya, it was durable, it did even burn worth a sh*t. I used the chunks that I had left from a retired goldline to hang over sharp edges and generally leave behind when rapping off a route with no anchors. If you really want to know what goldline is like, go and try body rapping on it :lol:

Yep, that old goldline was my first rope also. A bear to tie a solid knot in, even worse to rappel from, a dulfersitz......no way :shock: I retired that rope in less than six months. Got one of them there fancy kernmantle ropes. After that I have used the goldline for anchor stuff before.
The chunk I still have, boy the last time I used it was to tow a skid loaded with a 600# or so rock. I thinnk that stuff would still hold a hard whipper though!

Reading this post, I just had to run down stairs and go through my box of "old" climbing flotsom...yep, still have a gold line runner from the late 60's.
I seem to remember cutting it off a 150' to use in a pinch.
It's all manky and fuzzy and touching it again made me want to tie on a 1" swami belt and steal my Dad's ball peen hammer! It will probably outlast me.

:?: I've been looking to buy some of that Old GoldLine Rope and haven't been able to find any anywhere. Does anyone know of someplace I can buy some? Does anyone have some for sale?

If you have the rope and show up in GA ill do some low range bounce test.. haha... Im not quite sure what Goldline is, but it sounds awesome... HAHAH..

I'll sell what's left of mine; PM me. I bought it (120' x 3/8) new from EMS in 1973 along with the Optimus 8R stove that I still use sometimes. Paid $13.20 for the rope and $9.50 for the stove. I remember the prices because it was the first gear I ever bought. Now it's finding uses in TR anchors (2 pieces of it tied around a 26" diam. hemlock tree most recently) and has seen hammock-hanging and tree-pulling duty. Both of which it sucked for BTW because it's so stretchy.
