rrradam, nikegirl and everyone else. I'm hang'n, about an hour and a half from J. Tree. It would be great to hook up... I know a lot of good people at the Gordon Ranch, among other hangs. Let me know, I'll be in the area.

Hey: Anyone driving to J-Tree from Portland, OR, the first day or two of january? I'm climbing some 5.10a/b, maybe only 5.9 cause I haven't climbed in 2 months because of our rainy climate in Oregon. I could chip in for gas & bring a rope and some gear. jon

Hey fo-d, There are plenty of great classics in that range. Go during the week...that would be best. My friends and I will cruising some of the easier routes (5.6 to 5.8.) If you've never been to J-Tree...you're going to be in absolute awe. I've been going for the past three years, and it is still incredible. (And yes, I know that I need to begin adding to the routes section of the site...) Hasta!

That would be really cool but I think I'm going to rent a car at the airport, but what would really help is to find out where the camp ground is where I can hook up with you or other that are gonna be there. I'm going to try to find a map of the park online, if anyone knows a good site for one that would really help too.

It's going to get a bit chilly and the days are short. (Sunrise @ 6:44; Sunset @ 4:41) Nighttime temps will probably drop below freezing...which may happen as soon as the sun begins to go down. (Get a good sleeping bag and tent or bail out to one of the local hotels) Highs will probably be in the low to mid 60's. This is the desert and the weather can change pretty fast. Wind can also be a factor; however the above information should give you a decent idea of what to expect. As I stated before, Joshua Tree is a beautiful place. (Adam, are we staying in the park or Indian Cove?) Can't wait!

I always try to camp in Hidden Valley Campground first, if not I go to Jumbo Rocks. The first night, I can go to Jeremy's Cyber Cafe outside the West Entrance and get online and update this post as to where I am in the park. fo_d... A good map of the park is part of the entrance fee if you come in during the day, and the booth is manned. But my Pathfinder is easy to spot... The license reads RRRADAM. rrrADAM

I hate to be a wimp but I think I'm gonna take henagerlessbolt's idea bout the motel, for one thing I hate to pack all that camping gear and put it on the plane and, I'm a fair weather camper. One more question....rrradam how much of my gear should I bring? will we be doing mostly trad, top rope or sport, I have 2 ropes, chocks, some hexes and draws, if you want me to bring it all I can with no trouble. I think thats all I need to know except, sometime before the 9th let me know where to find you when we get there. hangerlessbolt....how far are the motels or hotels and do you have any names for them or would it be ok to just wait till i get there to get one? ttyl [ This Message was edited by: fo_d on 2001-12-19 11:22 ]

Well, just an update on the weather this Thursday it is suppose to rain and maybe a little on Friday morning. Adam and I will be leaving on Friday instead of Thursday. Climbing is all about FUN and FRIENDS not the rating (for me anyways)!!! Well, I hope to meet some of you at J. Tree and if you have any questions at all, ASK!!!

There is also an "Information Board" in Hidden Valley campground where people can post messages (back side). For those of you that havn't been there for a while it might be a little confusing at first. They moved the main road going past Intersection Rock to west side of it. There's a parking lot on the northeast side of IR now. I agree with rradam, I like to camp at Hidden Valley campground best but it's harder to get a site there. Ryan campground is my next option and then Jumbo.

I'll have to update this thread from Jeremy's or leave a message on the above mentioned board at Hidden Valley about where I'll be... Depends on what's available. I don't like Ryan cause there's no shelter from the wind if it picks up. ~Adam

for free internet access go to the public library right across the highway from coyote corner and the nomad climbing shop. the library is open until 6pm and has a dsl line. if hidden valley is too cold head to indian cove which is lower in elevation and sheltered from the wind. partners are always available at j-tree. put a note up on the bulletin board at the hidden valley campground. just make sure you have a little talk with your new partner before you start climbing about safety and what type of anchor you can expect to see when you get to the top of a pitch. even if the person is very experienced dont be embarrassed to ask questions. mike [ This Message was edited by: newbieclimber on 2001-12-21 11:23 ]

I may be at Josh this weekend, next for sure. I'm climbing very low grades right now, but I know a few killer 5.5 and below. If you've never been to Josh, but done a lot of sport climbing, downgrade what you can climb by about .3 or .4. Josh smacked me and quite a few other people on their first trip, so take it easy. If any beginners get a chance, and with a large group you should, get a good climber to lead The Eye (5.3 but mor or less a solo) and follow. Not the hardest climb in the world, but you won't forget it anytime soon! Brian [ This Message was edited by: bubbala on 2001-12-22 09:19 ]

Got into San Diego last night, staying with relatives in Ramona. We plan to head up to Palm Springs Thursday and stay 2 nights. The Technician should be arriving at his brother's place at Edwards AFB by tonight and was interested, and we may try to hook up on Friday I think. Unfortunately, we'll both be new to Josh. I'll have another issue on friday, that being that I'll have some newbie relations whom I'll be duty bound to set up a top rope for, if possible. (BTW, is there a spot down here in San Diego County where we could go on Wednesday that has some user-friendly TR's??) Hangerlessbolt, you're in for Saturday? Adam - As we talked about before, the Calvert Cliffs power plant is very close to us. Looking forward to showing you guys around, crags and otherwise. Stu

A 4 month job in Maryland eh? So I suppose you'll be hitting Seneca while back East eh? Sweet! Anyway, I'm a bit nervous about the whole driving in LA thing. I'm coming from KY, and a town of around 32,000 souls. I've driven in Atlanta, D.C., and Vegas, but am not a big fan of big city driving (seems way more dangerous than climbing) and would appreciate some beta on the best way to get from LAX to J-Tree. Should I just jump on I-10 and pray a lot?

This is my confirmation, that I, for sure will be there...Planning on a weekday, looking for the better weather day. And for sure,Saturday, the 12th. Can't wait! I'm not familiar with the board, or location...but, will check here, on a regular basis, before I leave. Unfortunatly, we use an Airport, internet connection. Traveling doesn't allow for any connection with my laptop. Where is this Internet cafe' people are talking about? I'll have a cell. Have no idea how the service will be. ok...babbling on.... Hee hee, I'm a little nervous!! T [ This Message was edited by: nikegirl on 2002-01-01 13:07 ]

I may head out for a day on Wednesday the 9th. I'll definitely be there that following weekend. Nikegirl: Your cell should work until you get into the park. As well, the Beatnick (sp) cafe has internet service at a cost of .15 per minute. It's located a few blocks before the park's West entrance. If you are heading East on the 62, the cafe will be on your right hand side. If you get to Joshua Tree and are still unsure where the cafe is, ask around...someone will know. There's a Library with IN service across the street diagonally from Nomad Ventures outside the West Entrance. My cell (ATT) work near Saddle Rock. And Karen and I will be there from the 9th to the 13th... Will put a note on the HVC info board. Just got back from J-Tree over the New Years... GREAT weather, GREAT climbing, even went shirtless yesterday. ~Adam

I will be there this weekend (Jan 4-6) and probably next (sat 12th only) staying at the Gordon Ranch. Look for a grey 1990 Toyota Camry. Basically if you see plates from Nebraska, it will be me or some of my buddies who have come down for a week. We will all be staying at Todd's, so come find us. I have a green rope and will be on 5.7's to 5.9's and maybe a .10 or two if the weather is perfect. Just got back from 4 days at Red Rocks. Froze our asses off, but had a ton of fun on Cat in the Hat, Olive Oil, The Black Dagger (pitch 3 is my new favorite pitch), and Geronimo. TRADitionally yours, Addiroids

ok, so how are we all gonna pair off? I'm coming by myself, on the Saturday the 12th. I'm not going to invade partners, but, gonna have to plan on whom I'm going to climb with. Hangerless, you mentioned 5.7's, somewhere... you know where they are, yes?? Gonna have to show me...about,k? Climb together?? I'll PM you... can you figure the routes...and maybe set up a meeting place...I'll leave that up to you. Adam and Karen, I'll contact you when I get to P.S. for the earlier in the week day climb...and Saturday, climbing too??? I wish for sunshine, folks... big ol sunshine...rain here is getting to me... Any takers on bouldering??? I'd like to give it a try again... this should be entertaining, to say the least... but, really want to give bouldering there, a try. let me know, Hangerless...if your game. T

Well... It seems I'm going. Yep, freaky ol' me is gunna fly all on his own to great big LAX, drive across the state, and go climbing for a weekend.. I should be out there sometime on the 10th (Plane arrives LAX at 4:30pm, and then however long it's to drive out there.) - and then I take a late evening flight back on the 13th.) I'm curious, how many of those who'll be there, are going to be wimps and stay in motel vs. roughing it camping? I've got camping gear+mummy bag, so I'm not too worried about the cold, but I'd rather not be the only one camping (gets kinda boring/stuff, ya know:) Anyways - T/hanger/whoeverwants, I wouldn't mind pairing up either, or something.. *shrug* whatever - just don't wanna be a drag for those who climb much better than me... :-) - D. While J-Tree is just North of Palm Springs... It's a BIG park, with no entrance facing Palm Springs. Expect 45 minutes to get to the entrance, and another 20 minutes to get to where we'll be. rrrADAM p.s. If you need a ride, I'm sure we can come get you, and bring you back.

My daughter and I are staying in a motel, probably the sands 10 min from the gate, Yeah I was kinda hoping we would all climb in the same area, I,m bringing 2 ropes and all my other gear we can probably set up a good range. rrradam whats the deal with top rope setup there? are there ancores or do you set them up with webbing and pro? I dont mind bringing out all my webbing but I don't want to unless we might need it. will we climb any sport routes? ok thats all the questions for now. looks like we wont get there till late Wed night, I'll get in the park and check the message board and then just cruise thru to try to spot your site, then just let me know what time you want to start climbing and ill be there. Unless you plan on leading any Trad routes... I have everything to set up TR's after I lead them. I can even set up multiple TR's after just climbing one route. Thin Wall, just one face, has a few bolts for TR, but they are 5.10d and 5.11b. There are many .7's-.9's also on this wall, but I'll have to use gear to set up TR's for these. rrrADAM

I'll be there from the 7th-11th. Will be camping (hopefully at Hidden Valley) and climbing easy to moderate trad. I'll be there with a crack gumby, so i hope to get him to lead a 5.5 or so while we're there since there really are no good easy routes in the Red. I'll be the guy with the hillbilly accent. -JB http://www.climbkentucky.com

Karen and I will arive in J-Tree on Wednesday, staying thru Sunday. I'll leave a note on the Hidden Valley Campground BB to "RC.com" stating where our campsite is, and where we are climbing daily. Look for my Silver/Gold 2000 Pathfinder with Ca plates that read: RRRADAM. Party's on... ~Adam [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-01-07 14:46 ]

Hey FO_D~~~ There's an old saying that reads: "There's no such thing as bad weather...Just bad choice of clothing..." So, dress warm and you can begin climbing as soon as the sun comes up...or earlier if you like! The real question is when is Adam going to drag himself out of his cozy sleeping bag and get those TR's set up!:p Damn!!! I wish I could be out there the whole time!!!! Well...as it stands...I'll see you cats Friday night. Hanger

ALRIGHT!!! Here's the scoop. rrradam, karen, and myself are in Hidden Valley campground (not on the main loop, but the little offshoot to the right as you come in). Look for adam's pathfinder and a (little) sign labeled RC.COM and check the information board in Hidden Valley for a map. We worked on shredding our tips on some nice campground bouldering tonite. Can't wait to see this party grow! See ya'll real soon, -JB

Looks like you already got the info on the campsite. I'm so disappointed I can't be there. Only 90 minutes from there and I can't come. My wife is due any second and I'm swamped. I'm gonna be a DAD!! Trevor: Congrats, amigo. Just remember that old western song: "Mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be sport climbers." Or something like that. Let's see.....by June, that new child should be about 6 months old, and if all goes as planned, he/she will be sleeping thru the night and eating well. Which means the 'missus' can stay home with the kid while you come climb with us in Utah. Best, JRB

Hey ALL!!!! Yes, I'm still geared up!!! No haldol, not booze, needed. Just straight climbing and GREAT friends. Trevor: Your site ROCKS!!!! The people we met up with, we're so great. Just got back... Detailed trip report to come tonight, but... Jaybee and his friend Adam had a site for us when we arived. Bouldered a bit. Nikegirl (T), here husband Erik and son Brody, and fo_d (Les) and his daughter (Ann)showed up Thursday morn for a day of great climbing and fellowship. `Sauron (Dominic) showed up that night. Les, Ann, Dominic, Karen and myself climbed Friday. Addiroids (Paul), his wife and friend, and Meadors (Andy) showed up that night. Hangerlessbolt (Robert), Toobigtoclimb (Brian), his friend (Danielle), Jeepmonkey (Joseph), and his friends Troy and Carrie showed up Saturday morning. So they along with, Les, Ann, Andy, Dominic, Paul, T, Karen and myself climbed all day, then bouldered. Each night at the fire, "Bob-It Extreme" reigned supreme. That's it in a nutshell, but look for the reprort in Feedback & Stories to follow. Pictures to come soon from all. None of this would have happened if it weren't for this site. RC.com rules !!! ~Adam [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-01-13 21:00 ] [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-01-14 09:30 ]

Heck yeah, what a great time was had by all! My tips are still a little sore. Thanks to rrradam for showing us all around J-Tree and to he and karen for their wonderful hospitality! I had a swell time and must come back. Nikegirl squeaks more than fo_d's 14 year old daughter! Thanks to fo_d for the shower... my hair is much calmer now. The 'flick it' is broken, I'm quite sure of it! -JB
