It seems that with climber guys, there are some names that I hear way more than others...seems like every other climber guy I've encountered is either named Jason, Josh, Tim or Jay. Totally random thought. Anyone else notice this trend? I was just thinking about that the other day at he crag, how many times I hear those 4 names when it comes to guys on the rock. Just like how 80 percent of all climber guys are either engineers, computer techs or mechanics  .

In reply to: and geo ... what about geo? I think that's the dude in the Matrix. By far, Scott seems to be the most popular Texas climber name.

could it be that those names are the popular names for the RC.com demographic? (in other words, simply a reflection of what our society selected for names 20 years ago?) Here is a list of the most popular names in the 1980s: 1 Michael 33316 Jessica 23744 2 Christopher 27697 Jennifer 22274 3 Matthew 22914 Amanda 18260 4 Joshua 19983 Ashley 17489 5 David 19556 Sarah 13676 6 Daniel 17520 Stephanie 10992 7 James 17505 Melissa 10952 8 Robert 16232 Nicole 10573 9 John 15928 Elizabeth 9987 10 Joseph 15058 Heather 9716 11 Jason 14679 Tiffany 8021 12 Justin 14513 Michelle 7835 13 Andrew 14159 Amber 7730 14 Ryan 13872 Megan 7626 15 William 12371 Rachel 7403 16 Brian 11792 Amy 7376 17 Jonathan 11731 Lauren 7362 18 Brandon 11462 Kimberly 7180 19 Nicholas 11079 Christina 7173 20 Anthony 10665 Brittany 7147

I climb with 3 different Daves. But don't you remember elementary school - when every class had at least 2 Jennifers and a Sarah? Definitely just a sign of the demographics of the time. Maybe you just notice it more with your climber buddys because ratio of men to women is different...

men?........ answering to "shorty"....? hmmmm I've always heard it differently. As in: "Yo, Yo, Shorty... Yo man let you go out dressed like dat?" maybe it's a regional thing.

gblauer - i am much too, uhh, 'unique' to have my name on that trendy name list. :P i'm with pirate on the name thing - most of the climbers are called "dude" - as far as legal names go, brian seems to be the most popular name of climber friends while jason is the hands-down winner of most common guy name. unfortunately for me, none of the jason's that i know are climbers - though they all have nice butts - then again they all play soccer, and soccer players seem to always have the nicest butts of them all. wait, off topic - sorry. /whispers .. hmm, i feel a research project coming on. tee hee.

Off the top of my head, my names of guys that I've climbed w/ are... Jay Bernardo Jason Mike Mike Mike Kevin Greg Bob Alex Allen Brian David Lawrence Justin Not very many of them go by "dhude", but I think that it is probably the most common name.

I the climbing community in Nova Scotia (which is a small one) I can think of about half a dozen Seans (guys who do a lot around here too, gym owners, guide book writers, etc). Next up is Chris, then for girls Becky is coming up in the ranks, but to avoid that I'll just keep going by Rebecca. Moral of the story, if your in Nova Scotia climbing you have a really good chance of getting the guy's name right if you call him Sean.

My first time out at the Gunks and I met in one afternoon: 3 Jeremy 4 Rob/Bob and half of everyone there was dude. I even heard a father and son team call each other dude. "Yo, dad, dude..." It just wouldn't work with my pop.

I know like 5 Jeremys.. not all of them climb though. There's Jason (nickname's Jay), 2 Brendans, Brian, Eric (*shudders*, bad junior high memory... moving on..) Although.. I know several people with very unusual names.. and they're all climbers. I guess my name could go into the unusual category too....
