Hey guys, I did some investigating regarding camping. I found a great web site for the Gunks. Go figure, its simply called "gunks.com" Any way it seems there are a couple of campgrounds with facilities about 10 min. away in Gardner. Yogi Bear Campgrounds, (Yogi is my hero!!!:))Well he's not my hero any more, he went Hollywood. Yeah all the perks but at $41 a night, 3 night min, he can stay in Hollywod. SEE YA!!! 845-255-5193 Hidden Valley (after all, we do need to be kept away from the general public ) 845-338-4616 Sites are on a river, this is the best one in my opinion. 1 tent W/2 people, 1 car. $22 additional adults, same tent, $6 each,(spooning always allowed, right Adam?) kids 12& under $3, additional cars $2. Additional tents, $22 and we can have as many on one site as we want! Hot showers and laundry facilities and a store. There's a 3 night min for the holiday. I have a 10' X 18' tent, I will share to help lower cost. PM me on this. If I don't hear different from any one by 4/20/02 I will reserve a site for the weekend and people can pay as they come in. I will put directions to the campground in the forum after I reserve the site. PM me with your opinions. Bunks in the Gunks not a campground, more like a hostle $45 per night 845-255-1527 New Peltz Hostle didn't hear from them yet. 845-255-6676 Redpoint Guest House, $110 per night, up to 6 adults, breakfast included 845-678-9500 Marie

Hidden Valley (after all, we do need to be kept away from the general public ) 845-338-4616 This one sounds the best... Do they have group sites ??? If so, we should reserve a couple of these. I can send you $$$ Marie to reserve them if you like. How many people are planning on camping ??? Please reply here so we can get a head count. To know what we need to reserve for a group site. rrrADAM

Hey guys just a little beta on camping at the gunks. There is FREE camping about 5 minutes from the cliff it can get crowded at times but there is tons of room. Its on rt 299 right before you hit the road that the gunks is on. We camp there all the time as do many other people. Let me know if you need more info Jack Mguirk p.s. Why do you have to be away from the general public? [ This Message was edited by: jackmguirk on 2002-04-09 06:43 ]

Hey I was just thinking of this trip and lo a new topic is here. For the head count, I will be bringing Fiend, maybe another, but for now 2 of us. jackmguirk: if you are meaning the DEC multiple use area, I stopped using that after multiple thefts. If you mean the Trapps Tenting Area(aka Camp Slime) thats where I prefer because its less prone to thievery. Then there's the big group camping thing that Alpinebunny is looking into.

Camp Slime is likely to be full for Memorial Day Weekend, and it would suck if people were coming from all across the country, and had to find another place to camp on the spur of the moment, because it was full. Better to plan ahead, than get screwed.

I would recommend the Hidden campground in Gardner for the get together. The parking situation can bem very difficult at the Gunks so can the camping situation. This way we can all travel to the cliff with only a few vehicles and it will be more fun if we have the conveniences of the showers and so forth. I'll be there but might stay nearby with friends who I dont get to see very often. It will be my pleasure to show you guys around. I was a local there for ten years so I do know and have climbed many of the climbs. The hardest part is avoiding the rangers to avoid paying the seven dollay day pass fee. hehehehe Hope for sunny weather!

Hidden Valley said we could have as many tents on one site as we like. Due to the fact that we pay by the tent instead of by the site. So lets reserve one site and who ever wants to come, we can add in to the site. I like the idea of a shower and TOILETS!!! If I could get a rough idea of how many, I can double check and make sure we only need one site.

Might want to get 2 or 3 adjacent sites, if a lot are coming to camp. Karen and I make 2.

re: The Use Fee The Gunks is not public land, it is private land. A fee is imposed and this money goes to the preserve. To circumvent this fee is "anti-acces". If someone cannot afford to pay, let me know, and I'll pay for you. As responsible climbers, we need to abide by the rules that are in place at each crag, or we run the risk of having access issues. If we don't like the rules, we need to be active in changing them, not breaking them, as that only creates problems. ~Adam

I PMed alpinebunny to see if I could pay less than $22 if I was in a tent by myself. She let me know that since it is a per tent fee, I would still have to pay the whole price. If anyone has a large tent that I could sleep in that would be great. The other option would be if someone wanted to share my two person tent with me. If anyone can take me up on either of these options, please PM me to let me know.

We're not 100% sure that we'll be able to go, lots of complications I'm trying to work out to make it possible, but you might as well count us in. There will be 3-5 of us.

Almost a month away now... Are the reservations made ??? If not, they need[/b? to be. I suggest just reserving for the number of replies here . If someone was too lazy to reply, then they will suffer the consequences of trying to find a campsite on very short notice. Marie... If you need $$$ let me know.
