My last 3 New Year's Eve's have been in J-Tree. Even though Karen and I are on a job getting snowed on in Maryland, we'll be flying home on Dec 27th (Friday) through Jan 1rst (Wednesday) to ring in the New Year, J-Tree style.

Who's all gonna be in J-Tree over New Year's ??? The park is full over this weekend, as it's a tradition for many climbers to attend this big party.

I know Art (artm) is. Who else ???

I will be there with my brother in tow as usual, and we'll be bringing 2 or 3 others as well.

Thanks to a link from Addiroids, we'll probably stay at the J-tree CLimbers ranch: http://www.womenclimb.com/climbers_ranch/index.htm

Mainly since I'm the only one of us with a job, and I don't have the cash to pay all their camping fees...

This'll be my first New year's Eve spent in the park...

We'll be there from the 27th, atleast that is when we plan to arrive, and leave on the 3rd..

micro... I've camped and climbed at J-Tree well over 50 times, and have only been lucky enough to score a site in Hidden about 20 times, a few times tis even included squating on friends' sites.

What do you do when it is full, go home ???

Just hike in off an overnight parking area and backcountry camp.

I may be there. have to find a babysitter. I am Mr. Mom for that week. Or maybe a day trip with the varmint in the backpack.

Adam - post daily on the HV bulletin board.

rrradam: somehow, someway it just happens for me. I'm not afraid to go around and ask everybody I can talk to if there is space. Also my stratagies are: show up on Sunday, get out there way early (3 days) before a long weekend, have good karma, bring gifts for hosts with an extra parking spot, roll in with just one car (the small posse approach) and some I can't divulge in public.

I hooked it up over Thanksgiving because I happen to know somebody....they called my name as I was walking the back loop and they were leaving!! My site just called out to me and I got to share it with some good peeps. I just try to stay in the flow and believe and it (almost)always happenes. The campground chooses who it wants to inhabit it.

If all else fails, I ditch the car and go backcountry.

I usually go during the week to miss the "weekend warriors", so my usual days are Monday thru Thursday, or Tuesday thru Friday. This is the first Winter I have not had off to climb full time, since I started climbing.

I too have heard my name as I drive by, and this is even how we got the site for the first RC.com Gathering at J-Tree last January... 'jaybee' owner of kentuckyclimbing.com scored the site the day before for us. And a day later, our neighbors left, so I threw another tent up for more users to come later.

As far as karma... I've loaned my rack to plenty of strangers, cleaned gear for climbers who couldn't finish a route, and even rescued a few, so I'm good in that department also.

Maybe I just need to pay homage to the J-Tree spirits. Got any sage I can burn ???

I should be there for a couple days just before and including New Years. As far as getting spots in HV go, if you are of the karmic few, then great. I have scored spots there many times too from friends who are on a permanent vacation. Yeah it's nice to be there, but if you want to spend your time climbing rather than looking for a spot, Wally's is only 10 min out of the park and there are no Scourge Of The Earth to bug you about everything they can. If a site is available, great, if not, the guarenteed place is just down the hill. Doesn't matter who stays where as long as we are having fun climbing.

TRADitionally yours,

Cali Dirtbag

Chances are I'll be out in Joshua Tree near the end of December, too. If not for New Years, then definately beforehand. Hopefully I can get away for New Years, I think that would be awesome, but we'll see

My buddy Lee is the Karma king. He gets a Hidden Valley spot every time. Just happens upon someone leaving for some odd reason.

I have to be home New Year's Eve for a party, but can probably be out there Saturday-Monday prior if there is a campsite. Keep this thread going and let's see who manages to grab a site or two. Anyone going to be there around the 26th will likely be able to grab a site (most people tend to be home on Christmas Day).

Got plane tickets...

Fly into LAX Friday the 27th at 10:30PM.

Reservations at High Desert Motel (across from Thai Place) for Sunday the 29th and Monday the 30th nights. [All our camping gear is here in MD on the job with us.]

Climbing J-Tree Sunday the 29th through Tuesday the 31rst.

Ring in the New Year with y'all and friends, then leave around 2AM for LAX to catch flight early Wednesday the 1rst back to snowy, cold, and miserable Maryland for job.

Sounds like a good time in the Tree. I'll be there a few days around/on New Year's. I'm looking forward to seeing Adam and Karen and all the other rc.comers.

Hopefully I'll have my twelve-year-old son, Austin with me. Ohh, and of course my new wife, Catra.

Cheers, Ammon

If Machiavellian and I survive a couple of climbing stops on the way south Oregon will be represented from the 29th through the 4th. I know it’s a long drive from up here but not to worry, I can make it without falling asleep at the wheel, I simply rest one eye at a time. Of course I do have past experience in driving LA freeways so that won’t be a problem either. Lets see now, Oh yes, "Speed is Life".

This was posted in the "J-Tree dates and info" Forum about new Year's

Hey Gang, Happy Holidays;

First off, this is not an official statement from the Joshua Tree National Park Service. Nor do I represent them. The following statement is being made by Joe Citizen who just happens to live in Joshua Tree and work on JOSAR (Joshua Tree Search And Rescue).

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about Hidden Valley campground and what’s up with New Years Eve this year. The NPS Rangers are going to have a VERY STRONG PRESENCE around Hidden Valley. Last years party was just too large and a tad out of control. The Park Service’s stance is that Hidden Valley campground does not belong to us climbers, but belongs to the public in general. Translated, our behaviour may be acceptable to us, but not Bob and Ethel, the retired couple from Nebraska. I am not saying in any way that all climbers are out of control. So, please, have a wonderful time climbing and enjoying the park, just be courteous of others around you!

The JT Climbers ranch is up and running. You are welcome to stay there. At the moment, there is no water due to multiple breaks in the pipe. We hope to have it back up and running in a week or so. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Wally Barker (the owner of the ranch) has graciously allowed us to stay there when ever we please. Show your appreciation and respect by cleaning up after yourself and others. Wally and I spent the entire month of August this summer digging the whole and working get the ranch useable for the season.

Have a safe, and happy New Years! If you see a white Suburban with a Yellow light bar, and signs that say “Search And Rescue” cruising around, feel free to stop us and say hi, or ask for help if you need it. WE ARE NOT Law Enforcement, we are group of volunteers. You can also spot team members by looking for the very bright yellow/gold shirts that say Joshua Tree Search And Rescue!

Happy Holidays and climb safe!

OK... We're back home in SoCal, and will be in J-Tree Sun, Mon, and Tues... We are driving a white Seabring Convertable rental... I think we will just be bouldering around Hidden Valley with Mike (mreardon) on Sunday... We will leave a note daily on the HVC BB telling where to find us.

See you there.
