Jason,

Do you by chance know which routes are being scheduled for the photography classes? Thanks, Lance

Cannibal Crag.

Last year they set up fixed ropes and had photographers hang while a strong climber sent steep 5.12s. The participants learned specifics about camera and photo stuff, but also about rigging for climbing photography.

Unfortunately as an administrator I don't get to attend clinics. But if I could, this would be one that I personally would take.

I just signed up, but I'm not planning on taking any of the clinics. Anyone looking for partners? Anyone have suggestions on how to get to from the airport to the campgrounds (or willing to give me a ride)? I'm planning on being there at least a few days before RRR starts -- so if anyone wants to rope up with me, let me know!

I'll probably be getting to RR a couple days early (like thursday, or earlier if I get rained out of Yosemite) and looking for climbing partners. I'd like to do some multipitch stuff, 5.easy to 5.10+. I only have a partial rack though and no rope at the moment (but i might be buying one soon). I've been to RR a few times before and am a little familiar with at least the black velvet canyon area. And I can pick up anyone from the airport on my way through vegas (but don't know what day that will be, so if you can find more reliable transportation that would probably be better).

Will there be gear to demo at the Renezvous? I need a new pair of trad shoes for the coming season. Mine came back from resole a wee bit wider than they were, and now they are too wide. My local shops don't have anything that really fits, and won't be getting new stock until April or May. I'll get by for the Rendezvous with a pair of socks to take up the slack in my current shoes, but that won't be fun for summer. It'd be nice to get a sneak peak at any new models so I can see if they're worth waiting for my shops to get in stock.

Kathy

P.S. 31 days and counting!

We're totally open the following times for whatever:

Friday: all day
Sat: Morn - Noon (have the PM clinic)
Sun: Morn - Noon (have the PM clinic)
Mon: all day

Cheers!

That particular question is outside my immediate knowledge. I have a lot more to do with clinic locations and clinic subject matter.

In years past Acopa and 5.10 have been there. The athlete sponsor list shows La Sportiva, but that doesn't mean there will be a demo.

I see that they have buses for transportation for the clinics.

Do these buses run all day shuttling to different areas. I would like to get some more climbing in after the clinics and hate to go back to the campsite when I am already out at the rock.

Also, How is the camping and parking at Spring Mountain Ranch? I have been contemplating renting a car, but is there a cheaper way other then a cab to get out to the Ranch?

On Friday the busses will run out once and back once. On Saturday and Sunday, the busses will run out and back four times...at the beginning and end of each clinic cycle. You will definately want to be on the bus for the trip back at the end of the day otherwise you'll be hitch-hiking.

I actually think Spring Mountain Ranch is a great place to camp. Our normal campground here isn't so great, but SMR is pleasant and you'll be in the middle of everything. In addition to this, if you drink too much beer in the evening, there is no need to drive anywhere...

A cab ride out to SMR will probably cost more than $100. Same with the ride back. Do the math to see what's right for you, but I'd probably just rent a car. There's plenty of parking.

Unless you can convince someone to pick you up at the airport and then to drop you off afterwards, you'll probably be spending some money on transportation.

One final note on transportation: Watch the speed limit inside Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. The State Park Rangers make a killing on tickets during Rendezvous.

Do cell phones work in the campground and around the festival venue? If not, I'll have to figure out another way to meet up with partners.

I have Alltel and I'm pretty sure I got reception last year.

Cell reception is pretty good at Spring Mountain Ranch and in the Blue Diamond area, however it is spotty inside the loop and nearly non-existant in Calico Basin.

We are looking for a few more people to volunteer to work as pullout coordinators. If you do this, you will get in free to all the events, but you will only get to one day's worth of clinics. The other day you'll work the pullouts. This is a great way for people on a budget to get in...!

If there's anyone out there who's interested in this, please email me at: jason.martin at yahoo.com

Obviously the at is a @. I just don't want too much spam.

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, so if you do email me about this, I probably won't get back to you until Monday night or Tuesday.

Thanks,

Jason

Will a schedule of the clinic locations be posted online soon? I am going with a group of people and some of us are not taking clinics and want to be able to meet up with them after their clinic is over. There are also people in our group taking different clinics, so we need to coordinate meet up times and locations.

I don't believe that that information will be printed online. If you tell me which clinics I can tell you where they're likely to be.

There are always kinks in the system and it's always possible there will be a last minute change.

Is anybody looking for a climbing partner for Friday, before the event? I plan on hitting up the Romper Room wall in First Creek Canyon to get some easy climbs in. Right now I only have one belayer that is really new to lead belaying and would much rather have somebody experienced join us. Send me a PM if you are interested in joining me.

Earlier I indicated that it would be possible to take a bus in or out of the park at a time other than when you are involved in your clinic. I was wrong. The numbers are too high and there won't be room.

You will only be able to ride the bus when you attend your clinic or return from your clinic...

Here are some crags that you might enjoy where there won't be any clinics:

Calico Basin:
Jabba the Hut
Coco Crag
Blood Stains
Yin Yang
Winter Heat
Family Crag
Sunny and Steep
Caligula Crag

First Pullout:
Viagra Towers -- Clinic on Friday, but not Sat or Sun
Circus Cliff
Tiger Stripe Wall
Cactus Massacre
Climb Bomb
Panty Wall

Second Pullout:
The Gallery
Great Red Book
Stone Wall
Sweet Pain
Hunter S. Tompson Dome
The Observatory
B&W Wall

Sandstone Quarry:
Running Man
Front Corridor -- Avoid Man's Best Friend
Sandy Corridor
The Pier -- Good Place for Super Hard TRs
Wake Up Wall

Willow Springs:
Children's Crag -- Stay away from the Rock Art
Nadia's Nine Area
N'Plus Ultra Area
Pillar Talk Area
Land of the Free
The Owl
Sheep Skull Crags

There will be no clinics held in Ice Box Canyon, Pine Creek, Oak Creek, Black Velvet, Mud Spring Canyon, or at Windy Peak. Both single pitch and multi-pitch climbs are available in those places.

Non-Clinic Popular climbs will be busy. I would avoid Birdland, Cat in the Hat, Frogland, Olive Oil and Tunnel Vision. There are tons of climbs of a similar grade that won't be super busy.

Anyone interested in sport climbing?

A friend told me about a place that has some pretty awesome stuff to sport climb (I just looked at the guide book and there's a close concentration of easy to moderate, 5.8s - 5.11. Much of other stuff I've quickly browsed through in the RR guide looks to be mixed or trad, which I'll be taking a clinic on, but obviously in no place to lead yet.)

My friend and I would be itching to sport climb a comfortable range of 8's, 9's, and 10's (maybe attempt one 11a) at that place anytime Friday, Sat AM, Sun AM, Monday.

Anyone else who hasn't learned how to do trad yet? We're very laid back and friendly, so holla if you might be interested in joining!

Cheers, Danny

Hey, Snackmaster, I'll take you up on that offer. I live in las vegas and plan to be at the RRR from Friday until Tuesday. I am pretty familiar with the area and can safely lead up 5.11's. I also do not have a climbing partner until monday so shoot me an email of where we could get together to throw down on some rock!

Cool! I'm traveling with a buddy of mine. I onsight around 5.10b - he's at maybe 5.9. If that's a little too slow for your usual, just let us know, no worries!

I think there's some other folks on here that are also getting in Thurs. night, climbing Friday. I'm hoping to meet up with them at some point, too. Part of the fun of flying out to this is to meet other climbers from everywhere. I'm stoked!

PM me your phone # and we'll connect before I fly out. Friday should be great for heading out with a local - we can figure out somewhere to meet at the campground ;) You're taking clinics, too, right? We're in Learning to Trad (Sun), and Working a Route (Sat) - both afternoon times. Anyone else?
