Okay, so taking Sharpie's cue, I'd like to propose a Gathering this summer for all of us parenting types who climb with our kids. I'm thinking perhaps we spend a day at Castlewood Canyon (bouldering, top rope, sport and some trad all close by; all single pitch, but with kids present, that's probably a good idea), then off to Cherry Creek State Park for a cookout and swimming (there's also a playground close to the swimming area). Anyone interested? Other suggestions of places to climb?

I have a seven year old daughter I take climbing (pics to be posted soon). But you guys are a bit too much of a drive to make with her. Maybe I'll suggest some of us stuck out east do something like this.

Even though I have summers off, I realize that most people don't, so I'm thinking that a Saturday or Sunday in July might work... I figure July 4 weekend won't be so good just due to crowds, so that gives us the weekend of the 10th or 17th (I think I'm supposed to go out of town on the 24th for a work related conference, and I'm moving on the weekend of the 31st). Any preferences?

Either of those weekends would work for me. I like the idea of Castlewood, that'd be a great place for it.

Have 6 and 9 year olds that would love to come. UT isn't so far away. I would have to be on a Sat. so I could do the drive Fri./Mon.

Okay, cool. We can do a Saturday, no problem. I have a 10 and a 14 (better make that 15; he turns that next week!) year old that will be with me. So we're looking at Saturday, July 17... Castlewood Canyon State Park for the day's climbing... Cherry Creek State Park for dinner? Cherry Creek has camping for the out-of-town types, as well as a beach and playground plus picnic tables and grills all close to one another (within sight/shouting distance). We have five families so far... anyone else interested? (edited to pick a specific date by request) :)

As the date gets closer, I'll update the thread, and will probably add a page to my team's webpage with directions and whatnot just to make things a little easier for anyone interested. I think this will end up being a lot of fun. :)

Yup... sure is, as far as I'm concerned. :) I've contacted the team sponsors and asked for stickers, catalogs and the like, so with luck, I'll have some stuff for our cars and kids by then. :) Here are directions to a good place for us to meet: To Westside Trail Head Parking Area from I-25: Take Exit 184, turn East on Founders' Parkway Stay on Founders' Parkway for ~ 4 miles (it swings around and heads south) Turn East on State Highway 86 (SH 86) Take SH 86 for ~ 4.2 miles to Castlewood Canyon Road (on the right) Head South on Castlewood Canyon Road for ~ 2 miles until you reach the West Entrance Fee Station (Sorry, but you will have to pay the $5.00 state park pass fee unless you have a State Park Pass) Travel into the park for ~.6 miles, the Westside Trailhead Parking Area will be on your left.

In reply to: I like the idea---but not the place----summer at Castlewood has all the kid hazards-----wasps, rattlesnakes, poison ivy..........maybe even nettle. Maybe somewhere in Estes???????? If we stay near Grocery Store Wall, the hazards really minimize. I've seen 4 rattlers there so far, none near that area- I'm sure the fact that it's one of the more used areas has a lot to do with that; there are some wasps over to the left of the main area (near Licorice Stick), but we can avoid those easily too. As to the plant hazards: I've not seen any near there- a few cacti, yeah, but that's it.

Just a bump to remind people that the big event is this weekend, and to give a heads up: I was in Castlewood this weekend, and they had a sign up on the road to the canyon that there will rock blasting happening on July 17th (of course) and 18th, and to expect 30 minute delays. :P See you there!

Is anyone going to be up there with a rack? The Grocery Story Wall is mostly for toproping, right? My kiddos and I may show up to this. I have them all weekend (YAY!!!!!!) and would really like to take them camping and climbing instead but I'd like to get them out where there will be other kiddos as well. Can we get a list going of who is in? mother_sheep (maybe) Elder Lamb (maybe) (age 9) Younger Lamb (maybe) (age 5) Sharpie Sharpie JR (age 4) Phaedrus Little Phaedrus (age 10) Farmgirl Little Farmer (age 7) Elder Farmer (age 11) Timstich Marquetta

Phaedrus Little Phaedrus (age 10) I'll bring my rack since there is some trad stuff there as well... there's a little bit of everything. Are people still up for a cookout afterwards at Cherry Creek State Park or some other such place? If not Cherry Creek (it does tend to get crowded), I'm open to suggestions for other food (and perhaps swim) options.

I'm not sure if I'll make it to the cookout after. I think the boys and I may head to Shelf to camp/climb. Anyone is welcome to join us. We'll be climbing where ever there is shade.

If I can hitch a ride, I'd be down for meeting more people in the area and serving appropriate belay duty. :D
