Believe it or not, that time frame fits my summer plans perfectly. I'll be in Colorado during that time, so it's a real possibility. :D

I might be able to join in on Sat and Sunday. My schedule is hit or miss. I'd love to take another crack at Cryogenics if someone will lead it on Sun. Also, I think Elbert is a great choice. The slog to the summit is beautiful.

Yo Geo. . .I hear that there is a 24 mile backpack that takes you around the Maroon Bells and supposidly up a 14'er, Maroon Bells Pk I'm guessing. Got any beta on it? I want to go ultra-lite and do a little solo trip out there in 3 weeks, depending on the conditions.

Josh called me on my cell to tell me the spectacular news. Of course we're both very psyched, but we'll have to check our date books before we can be sure of anything. We'll keep in touch about it though!
P.S. Hey Geo, did you read the thread on Powerbars? Funny schtuff!

I'm there.

I just got laid off, so I have a bit of free time...

I might even be able to drag some other people along too. :)

(If not, I'll need a ride up from Boulder. :P)

What??? I can garantee or your money back that Mntgeo is between 10 and 20 times cooler than any of those guys, including David Lee Roth, Buddy Guy, Little Feat, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Marshall Tucker Band and Lewis & Floorwax and the Groove Hawgs.

Well, Ok, so maybe not Mr. Kill em and Eat em Nugent, but all those other yahoos for sure.

skibby --

first, allow me to state -- unequivocally and for the record -- that i never ONCE called you a "bail queen". well ... not in THOSE words anyway!

second, i would opine that my handlebar moustache MUST count for something in the plus column.

third, clint is as cool as they come.

and, finally ... lewis & floorwax and the groovehogs? i LOVE those cats!

i am, however, dismayed at your demuring on this one.

not that i'm looking to turn casa de geo into a sodom and gomorrah (i mean, geez ... the carpet cleaning bill ALONE would be a b*tch), but ... since statistically there are more men than women climbers, there's always the risk of having what could have been a pleasant, well-balanced shindig turn into an ugly sausage-fest. ick.

let's have some female representation on this one fer cryin' out loud!

Sorry, Geo, but I don't think I'm much help on the representation by "the fairer sex."

As for the 2am start -- Cheese an' Rice! Even those of us starting in East Egypt (aka Aurora) probably wouldn't drag our backsides out of the sack until 3am or so. Last I remember, Elbert is a big class 1 anthill, maybe worthy of a 7-hour car-to-car outdoor stairmaster. OK, with much better scenery. Well, unless that lithe brunette at Bally's is leading the aerobics class. Oops, I digress. Anyway, I'll pass on Saturday.

However, Sunday is a different matter. Pretty certain you can count me in for Monitor Rock (chase those bolts, baby). Bring your new (sorta) rope bag. I'll even bring the trusty stick clip. Dood.

Skibby -- I hear a soft chanting in the distance (bail princess ...)

geez, what a MAN. you obviously didn't read the INSTRUCTIONS!

come up on friday after work and crash at casa de geo.

the fun part about getting up early (aside from getting down before the 11am lightning show) is coming down in the morning cool as the thundering masses of corpulent midwestern chuffers are heading up into the heat.

don't be a gym climber! REAL mountaineers get up at 2!

i'm flying out to tashkent uzbekistan on sunday, but i will try to make it for friday night and saturday. i am also going to pass on elbert since i've done it before(not because i'm out of shape and don't want to wake up at 2, definitely not), but if anyone is interested in rock climbing in the morning and meeting up with everyone for the bbq let me know.

Well, My Better Half/The Brains of the Operation will also be attending this shindig, so there will be at least one representing the fairer sex. So all you sausage-wielding dirtbags must behave!

Also, since we've done Elbert I think we'll head to another nearby 14er/13er on Saturday (la plata?), and meet back up with everyone saturday night. Anyone is welcome to join us, but I can't garentee the fun-hogging hilarity Mntgeo can.

2 am is fun!!!

wow! talk about seredipi ... serendipi ... um ... you know: things working out just so. i've just happen to have walked in the door following a predawn blitzkrieg across the ellingwood ridge.

here's a thought: howsabout we do la plata instead of elbert? THAT way, those who want mellow can charge up via the normal route, those who want sporty can tiptoe across the ellingwood ridge ... and those who want to rock climb can go to monitor!

or shall we make it a pure rock weekend with climbing at monitor, independence pass and buena vista?

you choose. the beer will only get colder; the scotch will mellow. :D

i've also done la plata, but not the ellingwood ridge so i'd be psyched to do that. geo - any new routes possibilities on that big steep face? its been years since i've gone over independence pass so i don't remember much what it looks like, otgher than it impressed me many moons ago.

'droo --

while there IS some big stuff on the north face, i've only ventured to climb there in winter & spring. i would imagine, though, that the whole chossy pile was cemented together by the snow and ice. i would further imagine one would encounter extreme rockfall during the dry season.

so, basically ... i'm game! hell, you'd be amazed how far a chunk of ensolite under your helmet will go towards raising the testosterone level!

besides, sh*tty alpine rock means ... PITONS!!! and i DO enjoy driving steel.

it has also just occurred to me that there's no better way to end a fine day's climbing than with a long soak at the cottonwood hotsprings in buena vista!

...Geo you are so damn hilarious!!! I will eventually get out to CO and climb with you but I'm a little worried about losing my wind halfway up any route we do from laughing. Laughing at 4k is much easier than laughing at 13K I need to start training in some sort of bubble or something?!

Well, once again I must tacet on this little get together. But the house is coming along and I will someday be available again to climb, and drink, and pound pitons, and spew beer through my nostrils.
Later brother, have fun.

Geo -- No offense, but if you're tending bar, I just might pass on asking for a long neck. This could put new meaning to "down stream beer."

With the possibility of something like LaPlata, you're finally putting some "mountain" in "... Leadville mountaineering..."! Ellingwood would be a worthy outing.

Oh yeah, and I'm hurt by the "gym climber" comment. As soon as I can roll out of my Crazy Creek belay chair, figure out how to undo this Grigri from my harness, untie the rope (oops, my error -- if you never get off the deck, you don't need to tie in), and find my Teva's, I'm going to mince your way and whack your "butt-blaster" with my stick clip. Then I'll hot foot it back to the cave and pull down some more plastic. I just hope I don't build up too much leg muscle in the process. doo--ooo--ood

I am in. And I am going to throw something else into the mix. Does anybody else on the site kayak? Saturday after the proud summit at some ungodly early morning hour, while everybody else is soaking their tired legs in the hot springs who wants to paddle with me? Either the Numbers on the Ark or we could dodge rafts on Browns Canyon.

Well that sounds like a date not to miss. My self and my better half would love to come up and join in on this trip. Plus you all sound like a great group of people and we look forward to meeting you.

We both would love to join in on the Sat. afternoon kayaking also. But beware, we're beginners in a boat. Maybe we could spung boating beta off ya.

Count us in. and keep the info running.

here's the deal, people: i'm tired of folks saying they'll be there, then bailing at the 11th hour. sooo ...

if you post that you'll be here, you need to BE here.

the only acceptable excuses are:

1. emergency surgery. in which case we'll need a note from your doctor and posted pictures of your oozing wound AND ruptured spleen on a stainless steel tray.

2. death. rendering #1 (above) a moot point.

or

3. the death of someone in your immediate family, including grandmothers. in the case of a stiff grandparent, be aware that we'll be phoning your employers for the past 10 years to ascertain whether or not yer grammy has "died" on more than one ocassion. it happens.

Hello Pot? Yea, this is Kettle. Are you calling me black? :D

I can't make any promises on the leather. But I have plenty of neoprene which is kind of the same thing except it smells a little funkier. which reminds me. I should probably wash that stuff at least once every couple of years.

now look here, wiggles.

YOU were the one who missed the pacific peak winter thing because "I was at the wrong trailhead" or some such lame excuse!

i, on the other hand, missed eleven-mile #1 because i blew the tendons in a finger whilst solo aid climbing. i have not only a DOCTOR'S excuse, but the second knuckle on the middle finger of my left hand -- the very one i'm giving you right now -- looks like a friggin' KNEE!

okay, so i'll admit we're TIED. but look here: "wrong trailhead" -- lame gurly-boy cop-out; blown tendons while SOLO aid climbing -- pretty damn burly.

... ball's in your court, little missy.

okay, okay ... if we MUST have a bathhouse scene and dress up like the village people i call dibs on the construction worker costume. he always did have a really long, um ... hammer. as a former marine i REFUSE to have anything to do with dressing in a *gasp* navy uniform!

and, as far as the showtunes ... again, if we MUST, i say we do all the numbers from "paint your wagon". at least clint eastwood and lee marvin (a decorated wwii marine) were in the film version.

Me thinks me hears a lot of show and not too much go from the ladies. Let's see, the June trip had the "men in tights" going for it. In reality, it was a little warm for tights, so Geo did his best with the wife-beater t-shirt and climber-dude shorts to reveal his manly physique. And while I was mantling the crux on Arch Rock's Kansas Honey, Geo threw out the "Do you use the butt-blaster?" comment. Honesty, I'm not in the habit of observing other guys' butts, but to each his own. All I know is that when I later dropped a carabiner at the base of the climb, I kicked it all the way to Colorado Springs before bending over to pick it up.

But back to the main point. A lot of talk, but I don't recall either Amber or Skibby at 11-mile. No men in tights, but sometimes ya gotta go with the flow.

So Geo, odds are that we can don our best chaps, borrow a hawg for the weekend (sorry, I'm a rice rocket kind of guy), and do our best YMCA dance routine -- and the gals will still bail!!! And don't think we won't look silly on the Ellingwood Ridge.

I double-dog dare the ladies to show.

Now that's funny. I saw that flick about 12 yrs. ago. Did anyone ever see the Simpsons episode where Homer thought he was about to watch Clint and Lee kick ass in that movie and then the singing started?

Anyway, I didn't hear any mention of Bridgeport George, so I might not have any reason to attend now.

Watch it, amber. You're talking about a gal who pinned down her latina competition in 10.4 seconds during the 1993 Miss Ibiza Mud Wrestling Extravaganza. (cough cough, of course that was ten years ago)

Still, you better start training now. I'll certainly be up for a match on top of La Plata (hey, where's lilred?).

Geo -- In keeping with the "YMCA" and "In The Navy" leather theme, I'm thinking quiche, white zin chilled by a single ice cube, and a full moon. With something dreamy from Boy George or Elton John for ambiance. Dirtbarbie's holly hobby chairs would be a nice touch, too.

In reality, Ellingwood will be closer to a half-eaten powerbar-like substance from the depths of the pack and luke warm gatoraide by headlamp. And let's not forget the duct-taped gerbil for an after dinner pick-me-up. All this while dodging lightning bolts, avoiding rockfall, and trying to figure out how many ##&@! more rotten spires we have to negotiate on this **%$? ridge.

Now Amber, THAT'S a first date to remember.

by the way, just to give you people who want to do the ellingwood a little perspective, the dawson guide allows for 12 hours on the route. i did it yesterday in 5 hours.

OUR time will fall somewhere between those two. in fact, i would err waaaaay towards longer.

read up on the route and decide if you're up to it.

touche. though, my favorite first date so far involved me sending the kingfisher, leading the first pitch straight out of sport climbing school, bouldering to cool down, having fantastic grilled steaks and veggies, and my very first tricam and bridgeport IPA.

if you can top that plus free trips to siberia, south africa, peru, and possibly easter island and belize, then i'll consider maybe possibly splitting with the current boyfriend -- especially if you'll wear leather pants ..

Amber, let's go down the list.

Leathers (check). No butt-blaster revealing, parking in rear, chaps with fringe here. No siree bob. We're talkin' full on jet black crotch rocket form-fitted-for-speed specials. Matching jacket and gloves complete the ensemble and keep the bovine population down.

Free trips (check).
1. Greeley, Colorado. This booming metropolis is stategically situated between the Monfort feed lots and the sugar beet processing plant. Depending upon the wind direction, it either clears your sinuses or brings tears to your eyes.

2. Colorado Superfund sights. We could start with Rocky Flats (nuclear waste), Climax Mine (molybdenum tailings), or Lowry Landfill (great chemical cocktails) and move on to the more exotic locations later.

3. Neptune Mountaineering, the Independent Republic of Boulder, Colorado. The Mecca of climbing purveyors, nestled in the heart of "Get out your Birkenstocks and hug a tree", USA. You'd love Boulder. The outdoor Pearl Street Mall is a perfect place to see and be seen. And to learn that local ordinances require men to shave their legs and women not to.

Climbing (check). I don't know anything about the kingfisher, but this state has some of the finest choss piles anywhere. For mountains and 14'er bagging, think heaps of tilted ball bearings in the southern Sawatch range (i.e. Mt. Tabaguache). For over-bolted, squeezed lines, chipped holds, and soft grades, go with Boulder Sport Park. And for soft sandstone that allows you to manufacture holds with a sharp nut tool whenever you deem necessary, Garden of the Gods can't be beat. (My humble apologies to Colorado Springs climbers who like the place.)

Finally, the grilled steak thing. I find gerbil filets just can't be beat. Oh, they can be a little gamey late in the season if they've had the change to run too much. However, they are quite packable, remain fresh for days, and have a multitude of uses. In a pinch at high altitude, substitute pikas or marmots, but don't spare the A1 sauce.

Remember, Colorado is home to Coors Lite -- the most manly of manly beers. And for cross-training, or cross-dressing, or cross-whatever, the queen of drinks, ZIMA ("there's Zomething In My A$$").

It just doesn't get any better than this.

shorty --

doood! i had SUCH a blast climbing with you and skibby yesterday. next time don't be such a d*mn lead hog! let someone else tie into the sharp end every couple of climbs!

martha -- so ... how do you like friction climbing? thanks for the apres climb jalapeno wheat beer! it most definitely hit the spot.

i apologize for the mess i made at the restaurant when i spooged the ranch dressing all over the table and myself! like i said, that beer hit the spot. and after climbing all day with not much to eat, i think i was a bit loopy!

keep thinking about this gathering!

(Warning, Will Robinson, Warning! Sarcasm meter going off the scale. Robot detects Dr. Smith's tampering with ethics program. Danger, Danger ...)

Ah yes, Amber, I remember sport leading school.

Leader's Lesson:
1. locate bolt
2. climb towards bolt
3. clip bolt
4. repeat if necessary

Belayer's Lesson:
1. locate Crazy Creek chair
2. park butt-blaster in chair
3. clip rope into grigri and harness
4. keep bottle of sparkling, natural spring water nearby
5. practice saying "dude" as a three-syllable word

Tough school. I started in the remedial group, needed after hours tutoring from Sylvan Learning Centers, but finally tested for my G.E.d. after 4 years. Didn't graduate because I kept missing the final multiple choice question: "A 5.11a lead is ..."
A. Really freakin' hard!
B. Attainable only on low-gravity days with bolt-to-bolt hangs for fat-ass working stiffs.
C. An embarrassingly easy warm up climb, only done after spraying about 3 blown tendons from sending your latest project at VRG.

Fortunately, I've just been accepted into "Slab 101 for Gumbies" at the local community college. Rumor has it, our first lesson is to perfect the "Edwin Moses belay stance" -- a handy technique for Boulder's waaay runout 5.4 Flatiron routes. I can't wait.

Geo -- kwitcher bitchin', just grab the cams & draws (dude), and climb. Besides, I seem to remember your comments on one lead, about needing something bigger (ahem) to use in the crack.

Skibby -- Yah, ve vill make a burly-gurl slab klimber out of you yet. You vill flex your shapely calves und beat zee vimpy rock into submission. Vimpy Frenchy sport klimbs are for zee gurly-men. Ahnold vould approve.

And remember, gerbil is served as a wrap.

shorty, dood --

and, by the way, may i ask -- why do the ladies call you SHORTY?

to correct the misinformation you've been scooping out here: i did not say i needed something BIGGER on that route, i said i needed something SMALLER. you know, come to think of it -- i've never seen you place a nut. "friends and tcu's ... that's all i need".

geez, man ... it's a d*mn good thing we used YOUR rack, 'cause if it were up to THIS heavy-duty trad-daddy i'd have been pounding a bunch of nested angles and leeper z's behind every one of those expando flakes.

oh, and while i'm on a roll: even though my 200 pounds of solid steel and sex appeal DID grind that one flake to a pulp, i was STILL able to heft my prodigious, dense mass and stick that one dyno move where YOU took the women's and children's variation with much whimpering and gnashing of teeth.

bite.

me.

dood.

*dancing the "cabbage patch"* go geo ... it's your birthday ...

Wow, not certain about this, but I think I've been slammed. I just may take my grigri back to Clear Creek Canyon and pout. Bring out the waaahh-mbulance.

BZZZZZT! Thanks for playing, but last time I checked, a number 3 camalot is bigger than a number 2 camalot. I know my cams -- pink, teal, turquoise, mauve, aqua, sunflower, puce, and tangerine -- I just love that rainbow (coalition) of colors.

Geo, try getting in touch with your feminine side. Nothing like some purdy spring things to balance that hunka-hunka "steel and sex appeal." Besides, who needs nuts and hexes (aka "3-dimensional things") when I have lavender anodized French biners which are color coordinated with my slippers. But I somehow need to find a wife-beater t-shirt in primrose to complete my ensemble.

yeah, we WERE talking about those rainbow stickers, weren't we? LOOK -- i don't mind if someone's of an alternative lifestyle. MY problem is that some of those stickers are so small you're almost up the guy's @SS before you see them! and believe me, it's not a pleasant thing to be rear-ended by a ram!

... or a probe.

insofar as your pretty biners ... give me bd ovals any day. yeah, they're a lot heavier, but i can usually get in an entire set of curls -- thereby further bulking up my guns -- while i'm waiting for you to thrutch up the pitch and flop yer carcass onto the belay like a landed halibut.

rock on.

Oh, I am so-o-o-o-o hurt now. Like, I'm taking my "bicycle" Petzl helmet, "bicycle" Oakley shades, Petzl Reverso, and svelte wire gate rack back to where floundering onto the belay ledge is considered a higher art form.

Back to where "I'll put a cap in your ass" doesn't involve a long neck.

Back to where "Let's do crack today" requires a glass -- not metallic -- bong (bong).

Oh that's right, I'm already back in Aurora.

For everyone interested in Ellingwood Ridge, let's have a show of hands who's read Geo's homework assignment. Well now, not very hands out there in cyber land. In hopes of keeping the gold stars by your names, here are the Cliff Notes.

per Lou Dawson's guide
"To climb it safely you must have good technical route finding and climbing skills. Carry a rope and small amount of rock climbing hardware."

"With careful route finding all the aretes on the ridge can be skirted on the side. For more excitement try climbing several aretes. Be ready to rappel if you do so."

per Gerry Roach's guide
"The closer you stay to the ridge crest, the greater the difficulty will be. Staying directly on the ridge crest all the way is an endeavor that requires several rappels, much Class 4 climbing, some Class 5 climbing and, possibly, more than one day to complete."

My favorite line from Roach comes from his description of a few reference points along the ridge. "The view from here is discouraging." He states this more than once.

Due to the length and complexity of the Ellingwood Ridge, we need to keep the size of the team relatively small -- say no more than 6. So let's start getting the list firmed up. And remember, there's also the Class 2 northwest ridge for laplata, which is really a nice hike.

And our first lucky contestant is mtngeo (geo *@$%in' rocks!). Geo aspires to be from the manly country of Germany, which is why he prizes his poster of Wolfgang Gulich (geo must explain that one to you. I ain't goin' there.) Highlights from this Teutonic kind-of-guy include a love of panzer tanks, Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, warm dark beer, and lederhosen. His bulging rack includes nuts, hexes (aka cowbells), BD ovals, and vast quantities of pitons fashioned from any alloy worthy of his "200 pounds of steel and sex appeal." Get your tickets for the gun show before they're all gone. In his words (sorta), "Yah, I vill flex my manly biceps und krush das rock into submission like a little vimpy gurl." Only one climbing accessory mars his otherwise burly resume -- the 1980's Euro-trash fluorescent pink and yellow chalk bag.

Contestant #2 is the one and (thankfully) only shorty. Going against the tide, shorty feels France rules -- in it's own panty-waist way. For example, the Normans gave us (posters are still available!) Catherine Destiville, Isabelle Patissier (hubba, hubba), Lynn Hill (hey, she did live there for a while), and Laeticia Casta (Think Victoria's Secret. Think Sports Illustrated. Think I need a cold shower.) This is also the country that brought us Dom Perignon, the bikini, and the Porsche. Oh, that's right, the French can't build cars, so I must side with geo here. France produces great climbing toys, including the grigri, the reverso (geo uses one!), Petzl biners, and Petzl Meteor "bicycle" helmets. Shorty's climbing philosophy is you can never have too many cams, toys in the garage, or climbing shoes. Imelda Marcos is his role model. And finally, "Slabs RULE. Dude."

Snow, rain, sleet, brimstone, locusts, or whatever. Let's do this Ellingwood thing.

Heralding from the Land Across the Water and representing Italy on this foray, we can thank Miss Skibs homeland for Italian shoes; the father of all Opera, Giuseppe Verdi (that’s Mean Joe Green translated); the fine arts of Michelangelo; the astronomy of Galileo; the long and lanky I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Fabio; and the father of all mountaineering, Reinhold Messner (hey, he LIVES in northern Italy, don’t knock it). Let’s also not forget Ferraris, Maseratis, the Venetian canals, and the fact that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Italy also sports Cassin tools, Silvretta and Diamar bindings, Asolo boots, and even though the favorite après-climb feast of pizza is indubitably American, the word itself is inherently, thoroughly, Italian (rip-off A-Murricans!). And let’s not forget Stallone in Cliffhanger – how Italian upper-body can you get!
In reply to:

Spoken like a proud Italian! I like to add my two heroes growing-up: Joe DiMaggio (the best baseball player ever!) and the great alpinist Walter Bonatti.

Little know factoid here. Did you know YOUR hero, Joe DiMaggio, and MY hero, John Muir, share something (no, not dirty underwear!). DiMaggio was born in Martinez, California, exactly one month before John Muir died, also in Martinez. They mighta been neighbors!

Coincidence? You be the judge.

One great life ends and another begins!

Did you like Muir writing? He is one of favorite authors along with Wallace Stegner and Willa Cather. I like his writing much more than Thoreau, more down to earth and basic, if you know what I mean.

Bob,

Do not base your participation on this. Amber was supposed to mud (or jello) wrestle lilred at the PBC, however, and sadly--this never materialized.

okay, young'uns, gather 'round ... uncle geo gonna' let you in on a little surprise.

*come here little martha -- come sit on yer' old oncle's lap. atta' girl!*

it seems that bob d'antonio is planning on attending out little shindig. now, this a good thing on several fronts. not only is bob a guidebook author nonpareil (that's french, by the way. it means, um ... somethingoranother), a prolific first ascentionist with probably well over six- or seven-hundred routes under his swami, and a walking, talking repository of climbing history ...

[b:b67e0502b0]bob has also offered to put on a slide show![/b:b67e0502b0]

so let's have a show of support and encouragement for what is shaping up to be a truly august occasion!

ill be in Cinncinati that weekend, and im still trying to get to one of these Colorado shindigs. This one sounds epic, although im rather partial to Dalwhinnie meself Geo, that talisker drool is what the heathens drink. Bring on the Single MAlts! Next time i swear, i think, maybe...
cheers

Should we add some culture to this event? How does everyone feel about a slide show of climbing and bouldering in Indonesia?

amber,

so does that mean 'droo can make it? if so, will he still let us wrestle?

-k.

hahaha .. i think he'd be more inclined to approve if he's there -- especially if he has exclusive rights to the front row and all photography for the event.

honestly though, we may end up spending the weekend at his work gig in SLC so that i can fly in early and catch a few extra days with him (awww).

i'm sure that we can arrange a mud wrestling event at some point though.

-----------------------------------

and, yes, geo .. i'm afraid that your plans have been foiled again -- he took me up the kingfisher, grills amazing steaks, gives me climbing stuff, and let me have the crux of maiden voyage in the Black ... not to mention an absolutely spectacular weekend in NYC ... i'm afraid that there's just not much hope for me anymore these days. .. (insert nauseating display of affection .. hehehe)

hey geo,

i'll know by tomorrow morning if i can make it. my weeks in uzbekistan keep getting switched around, but i'll have a firm final date sometime today. my guess is i'll be in tashkent during this weekend, but i'll drink a bottle of lagavulin on the plane and pretend the guy i'm sitting next to on the plane is you.

bob - i'd love to see the indonesia slide show. what kind of climbing, and where in indonesia? i'll be working down there next year and want to do some climbing. mostly i'll be on an island whose name i forget near bali, but i also may be doing some working in irian jaya near carstenz. any and all beta is appreciated.

Andrew, most of the climbing was on the Island of Java on cool limestone cliffs and towers up to a 1,000 feet! Pretty wild places with monkey on the walls and fruit bats the size of my Lab. The bouldering was out of this world. Huge, beautiful boulders set back in the jungle and rice fields near a small village with wonderful people and spectacular scenery! Give me a call and I can give you more information and some names of climbers that I met!

Sorry kids, (and before Geo calls me a BAIL QUEEN again), but that's the weekend of the Winter Park Hawgfest. We're talking lots of biker boys in leather....hmmmmm. Lineup includes David Lee Roth, Buddy Guy, Little Feat, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Marshall Tucker Band and Lewis & Floorwax and the Groove Hawgs.

This old hippie's gonna take a smokey walk down memory lane.

Have fun!

I should have some pictures to post here pretty sooon of Ellingwood Ridge and from the Class II "hike" that skibby mentioned. I did the class II route on Friday. From the summit, you can see the ridge. It is soooooo cool looking. Those of you who decide to take the class II route, you won't be disapointed. It's beautiful too.

Here are a couple shots of the Ellingwood Ridge, but from this persepctive you really don't get a great idea of the jaggedness of the ridge:

Sign me up for the "short bus" (aka special, slow, or gifted bus) -- we're goin' on a field trip! Woo-hoo! I'm willing to whimper with the best of 'em up Ellingwood. And assuming the Geritol kicks in Sunday morning, count me in for Monitor Rock.

Geo, with a little luck I may be able to supply some salmon and/or halibut steaks for the weekend. I'll be in Alaska the prior weekend with my Dad, and hopefully we may just land a minnow or two. Let me know if you need additional grub.

Skibby -- have you picked the Jello flavor, yet? This makes all the difference in the world.

Geo, I'm going to try and make it up Saturday evening for hanging out and whatever rock we can find on Sunday. I'll assume someone there has the local guidebook, only available in Aspen and Glenwood right now (me, too lazy to stop last time I was in Glenwood too, wah)... Monitor and Instant Karma sound like neat destinations. Don't count me for food or sleep space at this point - I'll probably have gorged after meeting my MA friend in Boulder in Sat (Flatirons intro guiding day), and if it's nice I'm hoping to just roll out a bag under the stars wherever I won't get run over.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it, either. I'm not going to be on the road in time to get there (barring a teleporter), by the looks of things. :(

But on the bright side, I'll be closer (Oregon) for the next one!

Bridgeport works for me, reminds me of sunny summer days snowboarding on Mount Hood, and shady summer evenings getting liquored up in Government Camp.

Bridgeport IPA for me please...

Easy there, big fella! If geo & josh are doing the wrestling, I think it's traditional that the ladies supply the dollar bills.

Ok, Ok! I don't reallythink Geo is old at 42. And he certainly doesn't act like it!!
Of course 50 is pushing it...and that does sound like a challenge....flamer start's packing his wrestling shoes and headgear....I'm pretty certain Bobd may be able to climb circles around me....but this corn fed Iowa boy was born and bred to lay the proverbial "Smack down"...flamer packs can of "whoop ass"and opener.

it's quite apparent to me this young guard just doestn't understand. i've put up MY humble share of hard climbs. but i know that -- at the young age of 50 -- you're still pulling down on some VERY hard stone and putting up high-standard routes. what do you have now -- close to 1000?

they'll quickly find out you can whup a man on a horse.

Geo, I think around 900 but I stopped counting a few years back.

Flamer, you might be corn-fed, but I was Philly raise and we didn't roll around in the hay too much back there. We could alway settle this South Philly style, ever watch the "Saprano's"? Let the games begin!

Mr. D',
What time should we expect your show to start, in any likelihood? I'm not going to be in the neighborhood until at least 7 or 8ish Sat evening, but want to ensure that I make it in time for show-and-tell. I have a quite good portable xvga projector that I can bring if it'll be of any assistance. Roughly 4x6 screen as well, but no stand - it'd have to be hung. Looking forward to it!

Josh, I used to wrestle for UNC, I can come off the top rope if you need some back up!

Of course I tip over pretty easy these days, especially with a buzz.

A girl goes on a 6-week road trip, and look what happens.

I missed the last Colorado gathering, but Geo, I am going to try and make this one. I may have a family obligation, but I should know soon. If I go, I would love to be one of the contestants selected for the ridge!

Well sitin here and perusing your banter over the last several weeks I have kept attendance in the back of my mind! Being in nearly yelling distance has no consideration. There is something about the sweet young 17 yr. old daughter I usually travel climbing environs with that has me hesitating. Although, I must admit on a purley personal note it all sounds great. On the other hand she might keep me in line. Oh the decisions?!. Babes, a la grit, on La Plata (my preference) or a mid life wrestling crisis. Actually, when I put it that way I'm sure my daughter wouldn't be phased by it. She's seen way to much of this mid-lifer to be amazed any more.

FRAN (just_me)!!!!!!! welcome back, gurl! how was your trip?

insofar as the gathering, you'd BETTER get your rear over here or i'll hunt you down, duct-tape you to the top of my truck and bring you here myself! family obligations? shoot, your family will always be there ... but you never know when the whole lot of US will be thrown in jail!

cologman -- same goes for you, buddy. i assure you we're mostly talk and little show. and if anyone behaves as less than a gentleman around your 17 year old daughter, i'll personally rap 'em on the head with a chouinard bong (and i KNOW i don't have to explain that one to you or bob d'antonio!).

Oh, wait - thinking about it in a less lucid state of mind, I'm bringing the projector Sat night. The slide show will start after I get there. 8) I'll not be too late.

Geo - Sean & Anne w/ pooch might come up; Anne's dad is staying in town acclimatizing for a couple of weeks for the L100, so they have added incentive after their Keystone bikey thing on Saturday, said it sounded like a good idea last night. I'll try to be in town while the sun's still up on Sat. Need a screen as well or have a big white wall? If anyone is headed over to Aspen/Glenwood between now and then, PM me and pick up an extra copy of the new I-Pass guidebook for me? Cheers all.

Hey, is Charlie (climb4life) coming with Mort?

tradkelly -- sean and anne hudson? you tell that gangly hillbilly i said he'd better get his @ss over here or i'll hunt him down and kick his butt! how he ended up with a sweetie like anne is beyond me. :D

also ... were you one of the crewmembers the year i paced him in the leadville trail 100? i seem to remember a kelly.

the poor sap had just come off the flu, was feeling like crap, and he'd taken on almost no nutrition the entire race. i knew it was pretty much over at about mile 75 -- about 3 am -- when he looked at me and said, "hi i'm sean ... who are YOU?"

then he lay down on the trail and curled up to try to sleep!

HERE'S some incentive for you!

this is from a pm to me from mikedano, the subject line of which was "pie pie pie pie"

[b:1ff431e84d]"I have been instructed to inform you that my better half/mrs mikedano will be bringing some delicious baked goods to your big event in a few weeks. It will be pie or bread or something delicious no doubt."[/b:1ff431e84d]

hey -- who DOESN'T love pie!?

"when you die, if you're given the choice between regular heaven and pie heaven, choose pie heaven. it MIGHT not be real -- but if it IS ... mmmmmm!" -- from "deep thoughts" by jack handy

Geo, so tell us a story about the L100 when HBO came to film it. You volunteered to show the camera men good vantage points... and nearly killed them hiking over the mountains ... and he ended up carrying all their gear too.
I think S&A are in. They say wow and hi and studly and all that. :)
Bob D', I'll be in the market for one of those guides fer sure. Ready to go... Ready to go...

tradkelly --

oh, yeah ... hbo sports hired me to guide one of their camera teams around to film the (i think it was) 1998 event.

so i show up with my pack full of stuff for the three of us (camera crew: "packs? no one told us we needed packs!") for 24 hours -- a good 20 pounds -- and the camera guy says, "hey, would you mind carrying this here tripod? it's made of KEVLAR." so i think, okay ... kevlar ... light. right? well, you'd THINK so ... but the damn thing weighed about 50 pounds.

by the time we finished, we'd been up and down the race's high point at hope pass something like six times (and me hauling the kevlar anti-christ)!! hell, the racers only had to do it ONCE!

i almost killed THEM and they almost killed ME! i'll fill you in at the gathering ...

I have a screen I can supply. It looks like Sunday won't be possible for at least Hallie as she is off to CU for a summer engineering program for prospective freshman. If harmony exists on the home front through all this I'll be there all weekend. :P

Excellent, Gman! So we'll have many multiple hardmen to show us around. Lookin' forward to seein' you again. Bummer Hallie won't we there for Sunday. It should be a good crowd - I hung with some of them after the first 11mile gathering and they're not nearly as crude as the posts might suggest. Of course, I can't speak for the host....... 8) Talk to ya in a week!

Just a thought here, atg. Some have referred to Skibby and other members of the feminine persuasion as the "bail queen" or "bail princess". But given this group's discussions of the Village People, sheep, and other sordid affairs, you may wish to retract the "queen" thing.

But then again, this is the 21st century.

At the risk of being slain, flamed and hung by my toenails, I'm just wondering if any of you peeps attending the gathering are taking on other BIG endeavors aside from the ridge on Sat. The reason I'm asking is because I did LaPlatta via a different route a couple of weeks ago so I'd like to bag something I haven't done yet. Also wondering how the climb will be w/so many people.

Don't hurt me.

Tracy,

This really is Geo's gig, but you might wan to expand on the "BIG endeavors" concept. IMO, "Sawatch" is really an old Indian word which loosely translated means "big gravel piles for crazy flatlanders to climb."

Other than the Ellingwood Ridge, the only Sawatch "climb" is probably Ice Mountain -- a class 3 or 4 scramble on loose rock and possibly steep snow. It's considered dangerous by many who venture its slopes.

If "BIG" means long hiking days, consider the following one-day ascents:
Holy Cross -- 12 miles & 5600'
Oxford/Belford/Missouri -- 11 miles & 5900'
Harvard/Columbia -- 14 miles & 5900'
Other long days can be made by linking two or more close 13ers.

Choose your favorite, but the Sawatch range is generally the land of scree and talus hikes, not rock climbs.

hey Geo -- two words back at cha: BITE YOURSELF.

Last I checked, the 4Runner in my garage is a 4WD. And believe it or not, some of us flatland feriners actually know how to drive one. BTW, the proper spelling is Porsche.

As for the quality of the rock in the Sawatch range (at higher altitudes), nobody will confuse Mount Princeton with, say, the north face of Hallett Peak. Or Crestone Peak. Or most of most of RMNP's Glacier Gorge. Or much of the Sierra Nevada range. Or, ... well, you get the drill.

Dude.

quality? oh, gee, i'm sorry ... tell me again HOW hot it's been down there where you live? i was at the denver airport yesterday (you know: drive to kansas and take a left) and it was [b:492a2ab3e1]103[/b:492a2ab3e1]!!!! hell, i don't think the surface of the SUN is that freekin' hot!

leadville? it hasn't made it above 75 yet this year.

so don't talk to me about rotten rock, speed-racer, -- i live in paradise. and in paradise we pound PITONS to hold the whole chossy mass together. besides, it's not rotten rock ... it's in the process of finding a state of geological entropy. look it up.

oh, and ... bite me.

hmmm... "grecque" seems a bit too close to "Greek" for my comfort. Given Geo's comments of "Do you use a butt blaster?" during one of my high-step / mantel moves, and of "It's not gay if you're on top.", I'm afraid. I'm VERY afraid.

Actually there are some phenom. climbs to be had. Shorty/Geo next time you have time on your hands trek up Browns Creek, give it about 4 miles. That is down here by Mt. Antero, pilgrim, another of your giant gravel piles. Your eyes will pop. I'm actually headed in there this weekend.

You'll have to check Frontier Airlines Web specials next Wednesday they usually have killer "week of" travel deals from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Denver...They only post them on Wednesday and you usually have to travel on that Friday or Saturday.

For the folks who need guidebooks to the "Pass": I have ten at the cost of $15.00. I also think that Tom Perkins and Neal Beidleman might joint us for the big-blow-out on Sat. nite. If that is ok with our host (Geo)? Should be a lot of fun. I might be doing some new routes on Sunday. So who wants to help?

Good, that is a start. I need to clean ( lot's of lichen and some dirt) this one crack (looks like 5.11d) and maybe clean and place some bolts on this nice face (maybe 5.10+). Might also work on the trail up to the cliff.

Hey Geo-
I did the Brown's Canyon "family pace" rafting thing a few years ago, and I seem to remember seeing some short, 1 pitch, sport and trad routes in the canyon. Are you familiar with those climbs? If people get there early on Friday, would that be a good place to start? Or, are we better off starting at the local tavern?

On that note. There are preliminary plans for a b-day bash at wigglesticks house in mid August. Probably the 16th. It will be the social event of the year for Northwest Denver. When is atg's b-day?

So where is my name on the ticker list!?! Have you forgotten me so quickly?

By the way, this party had better be good. I have been hanging out with a bunch of crazy Brits. I met them in Yosemite, and now they are in RMNP. I AM BLOWING THEM OFF FOR THIS WEEKEND, SO YOU HAD BETTER SHOW THIS GIRL A REAL GOOD TIME!

here's the update as of 1121 on 7/23. due to much wailing and gnashing of teeth -- not to mention another example of the white man keepin' the brother down -- the atg200 rap has been discontinued. next time why don't YOU try to cough up some snappy, sybillant, and appropriately angry lyrics despite YOUR whiteness, you sniveling honkey bastards! 2 questions:

first, for anyone in the Louisville/Boulder and maybe Denver area that can stand being in the car with me for a couple of hrs. - wanna carpool?

second, for George - I work very close to Liquor Mart in Boulder (for those of you who aren't familiar, if you took the roof off the place, you could land a small plane in there), so how many 12 pks. of Bridgeport IPA should I bring?

ubg -- your magnani ... magnani ... your KINDNESS is much appreciated!

martha -- there's really no reason to drink anything other than ipa, stout, and single malt scotch. however -- it the interest of getting as much debilitating alcohol down the ladies' gullets (it's the only way i ever get a chance) -- we also have a selection of lite *gag* beer, hard lemonade and zima. zima of course is popular with women and gay men, and stands for "Zomething's In My Ass!" salud!

neph -- ANY time on friday is fine, although i would imagine the thundering herd wilkl be showing up circa 6-7 pm.

martha -- schweet! a raise! congratulations. oh, and ... the mcstiff's jalapeno wheat was a freebie. FREE beer is the best beer of all. unless it's free coors ... then i'd rather you just pee in my mouth.

bob -- sorry to have blown you off there, buddy. as pertains to your tour de france coverage: it pains me to inform you i have not had tv for about 6 years. but, come on ... a bunch of guys in lycra shorts with shaved legs? what kind of sport is THAT?

now ... if they had SNIPERS along the course ... THAT would be an EVENT!!

I'm guessing the need for a screen still exists. I wanted to reconfirm I will bring one.

Thanks!

Ok well I hope to show around 5 or 6 in order to avoid some denver traffic. If I am early I am sure I can find something to do in Leadville.

I just wanted to send a note out to all of you Leadville blowout participants!

:D HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME! :D

I haven't been to Leadville in over a year (my friends moved out east) and I am so missing that place, I am so jealous!

have a great time, be safe. . . . and behave yourselves. . . . OK I know you won't, but it had to be said!

jeff -- the forecast doesn't look good enough to go traipsing across ellingwood ridge, so it looks like a pure rock weekend; i don't forsee anyone having a problem with that.

monitor? i'll take that action!

there's also buena vista and indy pass. so as to not look like an outward bound group or a boyscout jamboree, i would suggest we talk about it this evening and split up into groups.

that's all for me ... i'm cleaning toilets!

I am with Josh. my legs haven't forgiven me for the demoralizing longest slogfest on the back side of Rainier two weeks ago.
