In reply to: wow...we discussd having a pig roast this year couldn't find anyone to sit and watch it all day  looks like it will happen next!! For next year, we should definitely do a pig roast. I volunteer right now to bring the pig, and watch it all day. If we are able to bury it, then no one needs to watch it (not sure if we can dig a hole, or if there is enough top soil to support that). At any rate, next year we are eating a pig.

In reply to: It's frickin cold up here in beautiful flat NE Ohio today, and I'm still on the fence (heavy negotiations with the spouse are currently under way). Are we basically outside camping in the elements the whole time--or is there an indoors where people can hang out and dry out--from the rain, that is? The caving idea sounds awesome! we are constucting a large tent...with picnic tables etc the fire pit will be close and we have portable heaters and there is always the seneca visitors center...

It has, however, been raining and snowing on and off for the entire week, over some portion or another of the Seneca Valley, for some portion of each day. It will definitely be seeping at Seneca, Nelson, and Franklin, for the climbers, caves will be a bit more muddy/drippy for the spelunkers, and camping will require groundsheets, and plenty of changes of fast-drying clothing. Once things fill up at NPR (in other words, Friday night), Yokum's campgrounds both have pavilions that they are pretty cool about you occupying in wet weather. The pavilion at the Restaurant Campground has showers and is adjacent to electrical/water-available sites for camping and/or RVs. Yokum's store at the Seneca Y, or Restaurant, a mile or so north on 28/55, will have more details. (Shadows of Seneca is closer, but they have a little less lenient view of colonizing the pavilion, there.) HC 59, BOX 3, SENECA ROCKS, WEST VIRGINIA 26884 (304) 567-2351 * 1 (800) 772-8342 http://wvweb.com/yokums/ Hey, Topper and I will be making the Saturday Breakfast strike EARLY, folks... gonna get over to Franklin and do some crankage. Any of you up for an early morning run at some bolts on Saturday? And HEADS UP: While we're all partying and hanging, this time, would anyone like to volunteer to spend a day or part of one doing a bit of trailwork at Franklin? All these healthy bods and empty hands could do a lot in just a little time... Just another way to give back a little, since Franklin has no income to balance the impact, no staff to maintain the system, continued trail existance and quality access depend pretty much on volunteers, who are few and far between, these days.

MAJOR MAJOR BUMMER.... At a minimum, I will not be there this weekend... not sure about next weekend either.... I was playing volleyball last night and I pinched a nerve in my back. Now I am sitting/lying/squirming to find a comfortable position long enough to get a little bit of rest... Anyway, I am officially in the most pain of my life, as far as I can possibly remember. I went to the chiropractor this morning, and he x-rayed my back, and asked me if I was aware that at some point in my life I actually broke my back!!!! Well, he showed me the films, and showed me the scar tissue and hairline fracture on L5 - pretty ugly stuff. So, needless to say, I am not gonna be climbing this weekend, and I cant drive the 5 1/2 hours to ooze... hopefully I can make it next weekend after a few more adjustments. Someone else from VA needs to bring salad dressing!!!!

Sorry gang--but I'm not going to make it. I only get a few weekends each year to take off for climbing--and this one seems too cold and wet. Not to mention I was already skipping a professional conference I really should go to. Not to mention I'm already taking another trip next weekend. From what I've seen on this thread I feel sure you all will have an absolute blast and I'll be wishing I was there. Have fun and climb hard!

In reply to: I sure hope it gets better, or it could be a miserable experience. weather isn't typically a big factor for fun, or the lack thereof, at oozefest since there are thousands of caves, several kegs of beer, a full covered kitchen, a sauna, and a fire always roaring. i went up this weekend to drop off a keg and got to meet a great group of people. we drank very good beer (four different microbreweries are represented up there with an IPA, and amber ale, a pale ale.. well you get the picture. the beer is fricken good!! ) it was great to meet the crew from maine and to see ohio there again. everyone i met was incredibly cool. the only down side to my short trip to oozefest was red team got their ass kicked in bocce ball, but beer healed the wounded egos. to everyone that is thinking about going up to oozefest but haven't made up there mind: they have a freaking sauna and 5 kegs of beer!! need i say more?? oh, and the climbing will be great also. i hope everyone has a safe trip up there and thanks to anne, troy, stu, pete, and everyone else for their hospitality and all the hard work that was put into making oozefest 2.0 happen. see you all soon!!

Y'all, All is well at Oozefest. I left at 0700 hrs this morning (had to get back to work.) Yesterday was an ok climbing day. However, this morning it was snowing, one inch had fallen and five more were to come. The weather for the next week is looking good with lots of days of climbing. There are about 30 folks at the campsite with around the same number expected each day. Check out the beore and after pictures from today.
