Hope to have a good turn out like last spring. This information is taken from the Wichita Mountain Climbers Coalition webpage. Fall is just around the corner, and you know what that means. The Quartz Fall Gathering is coming soon. Mark your calendars now and join us October 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at Baldy Point at Quartz Mountain Nature Park for a weekend of climbing and comradery on some of the finest granite in the southwest. The WMCC has been granted a Special Use Permit for camping on-site at Quartz on Friday and Saturday nights. For WMCC members, the cost is $3 per person per night, whether you pitch a tent, bivy on a boulder, or sleep in your vehicle. For non-members, the cost is $5. The fee includes free use of the showers at the main park campground. Remember, open campfires are not permitted. If you plan to cook out, bring a stove. And don't forget to bring something to grill for the tailgate barbecue in the parking lot on Saturday night. Note: Help us to protect this pristine area by minimizing your impacts. Please disperse your tent sites, make use of the new restroom facilities, and carry-out all trash. By doing so, you will help to insure that Baldy's natural resources are protected and that WMCC continues to receive a camping permit for future events. For more information, contact the WMCC at: wmcc@wichitamountains.org http://www.wichitamountains.org/baldypoint2b.jpg http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=29665 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=33718 http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=29246 http://www.wichitamountains.org/terryboulder1b.jpg

In reply to: Alan, what ever happened to the last film project? I had all kinds of problems. First, I ran out of battery and really didn't film that much. Two, my editing program crashed when I attempted to make the movie. Three, I couln't get my DVD burner to work. So......all problems now solved. I got new long lasting batteries, a new editing program (Pinnacle Studio 9), and a new computer with a kick-ass burner. I'm in business. I'll look around some construction sites and find some scrap wood. You guys wanna go in together and do dinner Sat night? If the road is dry, we'll have the RV. Email me: alan@jackieandalan.com See ya....

I'll bump up the training, maybe go to Kenya for some altitude acclimatization. You let Krakauer know we're going for it. Better make it Saturday, though . . .

piece of cake scramble from WGTJ to Hobbit. Have you guys climbed Hobbit before? I wasn't feeling quite bold enough for the first move last time I was there - I think I'll follow it one time before I jump on lead. Tony's new book shows it starting down in the hole - maybe that would be better. We'll see. ~f

Breewwww- I mean BooooYaaaahh. I will be there. If anyone wants to tag along with me I am all about FREE SOLOING the 12's there. I heard they aren't that bad. Kidding. Can't wait to climb there for the first time and get scared sheetless on some 9's and 8's, if I can even climb those there. Alan, I will tumble down S wall if you want to film it. If I have enough juice I will climb back up, bring a barrel with me and get in it at the second bolt and ride the lightning.

WEATHER!!! Has anyone checked out TWC? As the event approaches the weather forecasts are improving. Now we are looking at maybe a little rain on Friday and temps in the 70s for the rest of the weekend. Berkly and myself braved the boilerplate last weekend. Pray for the cool weather. Quartz is slippery enough without temperatures in the 90s and 108.4% Oklahumidity. (that is just my excuse for getting my butt kicked out there) At least it isn't Texas.

Berkly, I believe Alan was speaking to me. Kidding Alan, As Berkly said, it is still there, but can be managed by most cars. What I would worry about is if we get those iso-tstorms TWC is predicting that tend to pound that part of the state when they come. If it hits Friday, noonish, that section may get a bit rutted out when the traffic starts to show up. If there is another willing volunteer I will lay in the ruts so that people can drive all the way to the parking lot. Gotta help a brotha out I always say.

In reply to: Jaybird, how was the dirt road to the parking lot? Is it in good shape? I wanna bring my camper. Alan, If you bring the camper, I'll trade you a few ribs for the use of your oven to heat them up. I'm planning on smoking up a mess of babybacks tonight.

[quote="berkly"]Anyone want to make a summit attempt at Baldy? I was thinking whos got the juice, then the hobbit, for 3 pitches of excitment. quote] Hey - you & jayb did those a week early, so what's next? (Last Sat Baldy was deserted but for Berk & Jay when I got there, and the only other climber we saw all day was a dude on the trail with a pad on his back; it was wild to imagine how different this weekend will be) Re. the mud hole: I got through it in the low-slung Golf Saturday, by aiming for the splashed-up mudpiles next to the deeper tracks but if it gets any soupier than that it'll be tractor-pull material.

In reply to: Peter, I hope you are bringing enough for all of us (by all of us I mean ME - suzy & sierra are sitting this one out). ~f As I type this there are 6 racks of babybacks on my smoker. Should be enough for all of us (and by all of us I mean you, Alan, Jackie, me, and whoever else begs sufficiently). Maybe we can save a few for you to take back to Suzy. Looking forward to it! We should climb El Tesoro, I'll bring my twins. P.S. When you guys coming back to Santa Fe? Ski season is coming.
