Registration is now open at http://rrgcc.org/register/ for the RRGCC’s 9th Annual Rocktoberfest presented by Keen, Petzl, and The North Face. The event is happening on October 9, 10, & 11, 2009 at the Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground in Slade, Kentucky. Camping and parking is included in the registration cost. The first 200 people to register will receive loaded schwag bags. It will be an action packed weekend with climbing films from DPM and a DJ on Friday night; the Reel Rock Film Tour, emcee Timmy O’ Neill and music Saturday night; then a pancake breakfast and pro athlete led clinics on Sunday. Emily Harrington, Katie Brown, and Sonnie Trotter are among the athletes scheduled to participate. Also on Saturday there will be two comps, the Clip N’ Go outdoor comp during the day and a Dyno comp in the evening. Our media sponsors Deadpoint Magazine and Rock and Ice will be on hand to cover the shenanigans. See y’all soon climbin’ that right purty Kentucky sandstone!

The Red's own videographer and producer Spencer Victory http://www.youtube.com/user/victorypro is arranging for some Saturday night fun with a dunk tank and water balloon game. All to be caught on film of course. We'll be looking forward to seeing Spencer's Reel Rock Tour humor short "Spray Lords" too.

Some friends and I are heading to the "Red" for the first time. We plan on enjoying the party at Rocktoberfest while we're there.

What are some good 10a's we should get on while there?

If I come down for Rocktoberfest would it be possible to get away and do some climbing in a somewhat peaceful atmosphere or is all of Red River Gorge packed and overrun during this weekend? I will be sport climbing so trad crags wouldn't be an option.

Several ways to beat the crowds during Rocktoberfest: 1) Sign up for the Clip N' Go outdoor climbing comp on Saturday. The Sore Heel Hollow parking lot will be reserved for competitors giving you preferential access to Sore Heel crags such as Gallery, Playground, Purgatory, Shire, etc. plus a chance to win schwag. 2) Sign up for one of the clinics on Sunday. 3) Hire a guide from Red River Outdoors or True North Outfitters. 4) Search the guidebook and check out some of the more obscure sport climbs. They are out there. There are several areas that have a mixture of sport and trad or maybee only a few sport climbs and thus may be less crowded.

There are still a number of open slots for the pro athlete clinics on Sunday. I am sure most everyone on this site is familiar with four of our athletes - Sonnie Trotter, Emily Harrington, Katie Brown, and Arno Ilgner (If not just Google). But some of you may not be as familiar with Mike Doyle and Audrey Sniezek who are both sponsored climbers. Mike is the former Head Coach of the Canadian Junior National Team (http://www.mikedoyle.ca/index.php) and Audrey is a competive climber and climbing instructor (http://www.audreysniezek.com/index.htm).

I didn't realize the value of this type of professional instruction until I took a private lesson from Jason & Tiffany Campbell. That really opened my eyes and helped me take it to the next level. Our clinics are a great opportunity to advance your climbing skills and are a steal for 30 bucks.

You think that more people will take advantage of the on site camping this year? I think a lot of people didn't even realize that it was included last year. Perfect if you plan to party on Friday and Saturday night!

Here is a link for the campground - http://www.nbcabins.com/campground.php - with some pictures. While we certainly don't want to take away from our friends at Miguel's and alot of people will camp at Miguel's no matter what, the Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground does have some sites with hookups if you have a camper or RV. Of course the biggest benefit of staying onsite is you only have to stagger back to your tent when you've had enough partyingSmile

We stayed on site last year, and it was great... doing it again this year...

Will hit up Miguel's sunday or monday once the crowds die down a little.

there are 9 people signed up for the comp next weekend. NINE. there are 6 prize categories. it's based on the number of bolts you clip.

so what that means is that there are a whopping 9 people who will be climbing in sore heel. the route to person ratio is huge.

so for $15 you can either pay to play in the comp (and likely win something) or you could pay to have access to the only area in RRG that will likely not be packed with people next weekend.

and ALL your $$$ goes to paying of the property - so you get good karma too!

it's a win win!

An additional clinic has been arranged for 10/11 as part of Rocktoberfest -

Leading at your Limit: Learn to read a route, conserve energy for onsighting. Learn physical techniques for falling safely and belaying a falling climber, as well as how to embrace the mental aspects of becoming comfortable leading at your limit. Prerequisite: the desire to push yourself further regardless of your current level of climbing.

This clinic will be taught by Alli Rainey & Kevin Wilkinson

Super pysched to make it to Rocktoberfest this year! Couple questions:

Is the fee for Friday / Saturday needed for entrance, or just for camping?

If my wife and I come (she's not a climber), do we both need to register or just one of us for the campsite?

How late do the events on Friday run? We'd be getting in pretty late (~11pm)

Thanks!

The fee is for both entrance to the event and for camping. The RRGCC has rented out the campground for the event. If you are arriving after 11pm on Friday I don't know if you would have to pay for Friday? I'll have to check into that for you and get back.
