Hey that voting thing is pretty nifty. But what's to stop people from voting repeatedly? Hopefully we're all honest individuals Well my one vote is on there.

Better than Foster, what say we do Looking Glass, NC? Couple reasons: LG has multi-pitch routes. It also covers a wide array of grades, while FF has limited climbs for the beginner/intermediate. LG also does not have any prohibitations on beer, while alcohol is banned at FF. Better camping at LG. http://blackdogexpeditions.com/hotspots/lookingg.htm Something to think about. As a long-time Southern climber, I would not recommend climbing in the South in December, for those that are considering it in this thread. Having lived and climbed in Alabama for almost ten years (3 hours south of T-Wall), it rained almost every day in December without fail. FYI: For those considering Looking Glass, there also have been breakins reported there, though probably not as many as at T-Wall. -Uni

If you're still letting folks join in -I'm interested in a Southeastern climbers gathering. The December dates work better for me. I'll try to make whatever locale is selected. Is someone keeping a list of everyone who is interested?

I'm kind of curious why Nov 29 - Dec 1 is being considered, and not Nov 22 - 24. You do know that Thanksgiving is Nov 28th, right? Just seemed kind of odd to me. Maybe nobody else cares. Looking Glass sounds cool, though it looks like quite a long drive from southern Indiana. [ This Message was edited by: tradguy on 2002-10-18 07:26 ]

jiadar also put up a vote on his site as to where the gathering should be held, so if you haven't checked his link recently go vote! it's on the fourth page in the middle somewhere. thanks ross! tradguy shares my sentiments exactly about the weekend after thanksgiving. i work retail and that weekend is impossible to take off due to black friday. damn xmas shoppers... Still working on it Anne. How far South are you willing to come? This is Looking Glass last Dec 1. I was wearing shorts then, but you never know, it's a flukey place, could be very very cold. [ This Message was edited by: mike on 2002-10-18 19:50 ]

I'd go. You should know that a TWall trail day is scheduled for Sat Nov 16th. I'm sure a number of locals (myself included) will go to that instead of the gathering if that's the date. As for a place, my vote would go to Twall or Foster's. [ This Message was edited by: vikasshah on 2002-10-18 20:33 ]

The South face of Looking Glass is actually a very good winter spot, provided it's a sunny day. The large mostly shaded part shown in Mike's photo is the Nose Area. Here, Sundial Crack (located roughly where the sun/shade line is in the photo) and all routes to the right of it all get a good dose of the sun. The larger sunny area is called the Sun Wall, and then you can see just a little of the South Face further right. We did Sundial and several South Face routes last christmas holiday and we were quite comfortable.

I can attend any date, and I'm sure that I'll come with at least three or four other people. As far as location goes My money is on Lostwall/Rocktown. You have acre upon acre of world class Bouldering a half mile from one of the great untraveled gems of southern Trad. Even if the Parking at Lostwall looks full their are only four of five routes that see any traffic everything else is WIDE open. Anything you can think of from 5.6 to 5.12+ And if you feel like the casual stroll over to the Netherworld you can put up as many first ascents, of any grade, as your hearts desire. No crowds and good conditions. I even know of several VERY good FREE large group camp sites. Theres even three woldclass caves and 22 miles of kick ass bike trails if you for some reason need to take a restday. As for the other location options. Fosters will already be mega-crowded, The campground closes in November, and it already has its own Largescale climber festival in April. T-wall doesn't have the worlds greatest group camping and somebody WILL get their car broken into. Sandrock is beautiful from up top but its graffiti city at the base of most routes and it too has its own large climbing festival every year. LookingGlass is damned cold in December. Obed is nice, but it lacks alot in the moderate department. Sunset has very little to offer in the way of camping This said I'll go anywhere, but My vote is for Lostwall/Rocktown. You guys name the time and I'll run up there, claim us the big campsite in the trees behind the hangglider lauch pad and have a couple of slacklines set up with cold beer ready when you get there. Whatchya' Drinkin'? Hell, maybe we can even get Climbinganne to join us? [ This Message was edited by: biggernhell on 2002-10-24 10:48 ]

If rocktown is as great as biggernhell says it is then i dun mind that considering the big campsite and the ability to have alcohol in the campsite . Question is...does rocktown/lostwall have a good number of sport routes? Considering the fact that I have no trad gear...

Before everyone heads to Rocktown with the beer, Lost Wall and Rocktown are in a park, with a sign at the entrance that alcohol is not permitted! There are very few sport routes at Lost Wall, and Rocktown is 99% bouldering. For camping with beer, Sandrock would be a better choice, but as someone said before, lots of grafitti at ground level. Sport routes, trad routes and bouldering fit for all, if you can get through the crowd to get close to the rock. I was there Sunday, and even with everything all wet it was still crowded. Sharie and I stopped at a TR group on the way out to show them they had to double back their harnesses, and there were four adults with the group! I still think Chatt is the best choice, with multiple locations close to each other. Maybe a central "home base" would work best, with locals shuttling people to the crag of choice. Maybe not. Side note, I'm going to Sunset Wednesday for easy trad, if anyone wants to join me I'll be under the overlook, on the easy routes. [ This Message was edited by: furryfrisbee on 2002-10-28 05:50 ]
