Memorial Day Weekend How about a rc.com get together at the gunks this spring for all us in the northeast. Its a bit chilly yet, but in a few months it'll be warming up and the gunks is a great place! [Edited title & inserted dates] [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-03-29 05:09 ]

Trapps tenting area is the traditional and closest campsite. Its actually on the preserve land and as close to the crags as you can get without needing a portaledge. The downside to 'Camp Slime' is that space is limited and campfires are not allowed. There are other places such as the DEC multi-use area or commercial campsites but the tenting area is my preferred site.

I've heard a lot about the Gunks and would like to climb there. I work at a camp in Maine for the summers and will going through New York on my way there. I will probably be going up some time near the middle of May.

Why wait? This time of the year can be the best at the gunks, good friction and no crowds, besides its all south facing so you are in the sun, i am there this weekend, and also for the get together. jay

I think memorial day weekend would work great. The gunks will be jammed that weekend, but it is not a small area. April is less crowded. not sure on the status of camp slime (last year was supposed to be the last season), we could go to binky's creekview a private campground where they allow fires, rest rooms and showers. we should get a count in the next month or so and i can set it up with the camp sites. rrradam/fiend: I could do that if you wanted fiend, PM me on it. Some people are asking for dates so how about we make it a choice between the last two weekends in May, at present the 4th week seems favoured unless someone has objections to post. If that is agreed then we can check on the Binky's/Trapps camping option. PS The 3rd weekend is a Canadian long weekend so will likely be fairly busy also.

I think that Memoerial day weekend will work the best for all. If you want to email me or pm with a count, I can go from there with a campground and number of sites. So let me know how many in your party and if you want a site. I think its 15 a nite. Camp slime is always free if you can get in,it could be crowded that weekend.

Here is the camping information and directions. Just call and make your reservations. phone: (845) 658-9142 web: www.creekviewcampgrounds.com Conveniently located just 15 minutes from the best climbing on the east coast. Come stay with us and enjoy our climber-friendly atmosphere. We have lots of campsites, and a large open field for group camping. We have trailer sites with full hookups. You can rent a trailer by the day, week, or month. Our men's and women's rooms have great hot showers. $15.00 per campsite (2 people), and for each additional person, it is $7.00 . Individual campers on the open field will pay just $7.00 . Our future plans include building a campstore and rock gym for those rainy days. And when you are feeling sore, enjoy a soak in the 6-person jacuzzi which will soon be up and running.

Camping problem. We may be limited to "camp Slime" The ex-creekview manager has left and says the campgrounds future is not certain. I get no answer on the phone. AMC is supposed open a new campground, but that has been in the works for a couple years and is having zoning problems. I will update as i know more.

I've been looking into this whole thing, and there is a good possibility that I'll be able to go. I'll have to arrange everything for me and my mom, and I'll have to pay all expenses myself... but I think it'd be worth it. I've got a few questions: 1) Is there a certain time or anything that everyone is going to meet? I'd hate to drive five hours (and thirteen minutes!) and be all alone. 2) ACCOMODATIONS-- Is there somewhere we can park our van and just sleep in there? (Remember, I'm going to have to pay for any of this, so I don't have much to work with.) If not, where can I find camping information? 3) GEAR-- I only have shoes and a harness. Will I be able to use someone's ropes, etc? Hope I can make it... if not, have fun, guys!! -jul-

fiend- remember what they say about bouldering in the gunks....like jerking off in a hore house.. On the camping and gear issue, there will be plenty of gear to share, I have extras of everything. camp slime is it. it is a first come first serve basis. as we get closer to the date we can figure out whos going to be there first and set a couple tents up. I have two and will pitch both. As for sleeping in cars and vans, it is against the rules, but we have car camped many times in the trapps parking lot. as long as you have nothing set up outside the vehicle.

Last time I was there... All the pull out parking was posted 1 hour only, and they were ticketing. Parking was either at the lot past the bridge, or befor the hairpin at the visitors center. Seems like finding a campsite upon arrival is gonna suck. rrrADAM

Hey guys, I did some investigating regarding camping. I found a great web site for the Gunks. Go figure, its simply called "gunks.com" Any way it seems there are a couple of campgrounds with facilities about 10 min. away in Gardner. Yogi Bear Campgrounds, (Yogi is my hero!!!:))Well he's not my hero any more, he went Hollywood. Yeah all the perks but at $41 a night, 3 night min, he can stay in Hollywod. SEE YA!!! 845-255-5193 Hidden Valley (after all, we do need to be kept away from the general public ) 845-338-4616 Sites are on a river, this is the best one in my opinion. 1 tent W/2 people, 1 car. $22 additional adults, same tent, $6 each,(spooning always allowed, right Adam?) kids 12& under $3, additional cars $2. Additional tents, $22 and we can have as many on one site as we want! Hot showers and laundry facilities and a store. There's a 3 night min for the holiday. I have a 10' X 18' tent, I will share to help lower cost. PM me on this. If I don't hear different from any one by 4/20/02 I will reserve a site for the weekend and people can pay as they come in. I will put directions to the campground in the forum after I reserve the site. PM me with your opinions. Bunks in the Gunks not a campground, more like a hostle $45 per night 845-255-1527 New Peltz Hostle didn't hear from them yet. 845-255-6676 Redpoint Guest House, $110 per night, up to 6 adults, breakfast included 845-678-9500 [ This Message was edited by: alpinebunny on 2002-04-08 08:53 ] [ This Message was edited by: alpinebunny on 2002-04-08 08:56 ]

I'd like some feedback on a possibility that is being presented to us currently... The Concord, NH Boys and Girls Club (including its Hopkinton branch) has a fairly active outing club, which is always looking for trips and activities to participate in. Several of us from rockcliming.com (myself, vaness, orestes1724, lawnboy, napoolari, yoyojen, sarahb) are members, and very interested in attending this gathering. We range in age from 13 to 17. There would be probably eight of us and two adults. We have discussed it, and there a good chance that we would be able to take a group road trip out and spend the weekend in the area. However, I was kind of concerned about several things. The director at the Hopkinton teen center has ropes, harnesses, and essentially everything for a toprope setup; but only two of us have leading experience, and none of us have ever climbed trad before. Also, I have my doubts about whether you all would appreciate have a bunch of kids around for the weekend. I'd basically like to know, honestly, whether we would be able to do much climbing with what we have and if we would be welcome. There would be no use in going if not; and we have alternatives, so it's not like we would be terribly upset. Thanks, -Jul

I know that I wouldn't mind. I don't know the Gunks at all but I'm sure there will be a few TRs set up here and there. I'm sure you could join a couple here and there and do some multi-pitch as a threesome as well. But I can't speak for everyone else

Good to see that people are actually going to come. Yeah for shure bring the kids, theres plenty of easy topropes that are very convenient. Although you might have to wait your turn for the most popular routes. A good time is shure to be had by all.

alright, I really want to go to this, but I have a few questions first. Does anyone know how long of a drive it is from Toronto Ontario? I have my own rope, so I could set up TR, but I have not traded yet, so I was wondering if anyone was going that would lead some routes for me to clean for them (or, even better, give me a few pointers on how to trad? Yeah, I just don't want to go to the gunks and be TRing the whole time. Steve

from toronto, a solid 7 hours more like 8. I am coming from rochester, you are more than welcome to meet here and follow or car pool. Camping is still going to be camp slime. It is right there and is first come first serve. The others have shut down or are over priced and suck. I will get there thurs evening and pitch 2 tents. Any one else who gets in please do the same.See you all in a month.

I think that Marie (alpinebunny) is going to get a campsite or two at the Hidden Valley Campground. They said that we can put as many tents as we want on each site. Some people replied to her post regarding this, so just those who replied will be there. For those who aren't staying there, or didn't see the post in this Forum, it's "first come first served" on the busiest weekend of the Spring for camping. Good luck, or send a PM to Marie to reserve a spot. [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-04-26 12:32 ]

camp slime is cool, right there at the cliffs, no amenities, its free. last year while busy, camp slime didnt fill up until saturday. Hidden Valley Ive heard is fine, but a bit of a drive to the preserve. Wherever we all end up, we'll pick a meeting spot each morning. There is always Baccus in the evenings. Is the date solidly set for Memorial Day weekend? My GF and I are going to be meeting in Montreal but it's not SOOO far to drive (i.e. for me to meet her) that I couldn't do so and mosey back down through the Dacks, Gunks, and her brother's place in PA. I will have to propose this and see if she's down, if there is any snow left in Tuckerman's we may go skiing instead

Camp Slime shouldn't be closed. It's just pretty small, no fires, and will be full for the weekend since it's free.

Ok, so I've been talking to a few people that are coming to the Gunks for the meet but are a little unsure of where they're staying and how to find everyone. Since people will be coming in on different days and staying in different places I think it would be handy to pick a convenient place and time for everyone to meet in the mornings so that we don't all have to wander around the crag asking everyone if they are "insert silly rc.com userID here". Any ideas? Side Note: the person I talked to is positive that Camp Slime is shut down for good, maybe I'll surf on over to www.gunks.com and check it out.

There's a kiosk at Uber Falls, and the country store at the bottom of the hill going to The Gunks. We could meet there. Also, Marie (alpinebunny) was going to make reservations as per her thread in this Forum.

Camp slime is open, dogs are allowed. I will be there thurs night late(5/23) look for a green tent. Uber Falls sounds like the meeting place each morning for anyone staying else where. Not too early though. 8 am works for me.Plus there is a place to post notes for any late risers where we are all climbing at. I climb in a green Paul Smiths College Hockey hat. I have a tattoo on my right arm of a cliff scene with a blue cam in it. Cant wait, it'll be a blast. Any of the Canadians coming down want to meet in Rochester and car pool or follow its cool. Just remember its not the QEW and 72mph will get you pulled over. I love the Q, last weekend it was 85 mph all the way.

You guys going to be there all weekend? I think I have convinced my girlfriend that we should show up for one day. I've been meaning to try and kill myself on the Dangler (I'd actually be just as happy to climb some garbage route to the GT Ledge or the top, and rig shots from there... should be a zoo on Memorial Day weekend, but at least some of the hardmen should be out, too.) If UberFall each morning around 8am is solid, I shall look forward to meeting you fine folks. Any distinguishing markings or such that folks plan to wear? I'll probably bring my cowboy hat (for the sun, y'know). [ This Message was edited by: jabbeaux on 2002-05-07 07:10 ]

We (my mom and I, and possible one more) will be arriving somewhere between noon and 3:00 on Saturday (I don't plan very well). Frankly, we have no idea whatsoever what we're doing or where we're going, so some sort of rendezvous later in the day would be helpful. We've done no planning except that we'll be leaving on Saturday morning, so our schedule is fairly flexible. Just keep us updated... -Jules

10 for a weekend day! Thats Insane! Exp since the Gunks is going to be packed in the first place, so people are going to half to wait for routes. I am debating about the trip because I wont get there til 1am sat, and whos to know if I will find a place to pitch my tent...

I'm showing up Friday night. I'll check Slime to see if there is room. If not, we'll try to find some place to camp out. It may be some car-camping for a night. I'm coming up from Northern Jersey so anyone needing a ride, let me know. I have room for 2 more people.

I've put together a simple roster list at: NeoGecko: Gunks Gathering Roster It's a portion of code I'm using for another project but I thought it might be worth it to use for this gathering. It's not a permission list. It doesn't dictate who can and cannot go, but it would give us all a general idea of how many people to expect. If it is taken seriously, I will run a report with the status and post the results a day before the event. [ This Message was edited by: k2exp2010 on 2002-05-19 15:16 ]

Do we have a set time and place to meet? I have a feeling that its going to be a maddhouse and it might be good to have some way for us all to find each other. Meeting at the deli at 9:00 is good but if someone is late they might miss out. Maby a secondary meeting place might be good, like the kiosk on undercliff road to look for messages and the uberfall wich is just a hundred yards away. Just hope everyone knows that these two places are THE meeting place to find a partner at the gunks. I dont have any RC,COM stickers but if there were some around it might be good too.

i think a morning meeting at 8-830 in the uber falls at kiosk is a good place. plus anyone can leave a note there pointing people in the directions where everyone is climbing. 9 am is a late start, for me. i like early, but to each there own. see you all down there.

I hope everyone that made it had a good time. My son and I climbed most of Saturday in the Madam G's area. Unfortunately we had to take off for home that night. Suprised that it was not all that crowded, not at all like last year. camp slime had plenty of sites. Well, sorry to have missed everyone. Scott
