Sounds about right on the measurements. Mine's at home, I'm at work...

Old 7mm cord will fit through the hole without much encouragement, so I would say 8mm is about right. The slot to my recolection is just a little over the diameter of 2 holes, so I would guess 20mm is close enough. IMO the length of the slot is a much less critical measurment as it will relate more to the ease of use than the function, with the only crutial point would be to have it a minimum of 2x the diameter of cord used plus clearence.

You could design the holes and slots on that same idea for any diameter of cord.
- Holes = diameter of cord used + 0.5-1mm clearence
- Slot = 2x diameter of cord used + 1-2mm clearence

For the Kong: What I can say is that either slick 7mm cord or average 6mm cord seems to work best for rigging it up. I've tried everything down to rough 5mm cord. The 5mm does flip over if your not careful, resulting in a very quick ride of whatever the length of cord you used is. Found that one out pretty fast Sly
6mm seems to be the consensus on having thte best ease of use and lack of slip.
So, are you breaking or using this one?

I think if you're up to 9.52mm 8mm would be your choice of cord.
What causes the 5mm to flip over on the Kong sized holes is the fact that ever with a minor amout of weight the cord stretches and the diameter thins, add to that the compression of the cord under weight (look at how it works)... if you have the time, make the extra passes with the 1/4".

There's a lot of gear that doesn't make it to the NA market... a lot of it should though.

Speaking of which, from what I can tell (being relatively new to this climbing thing and all) there seems to be remarkably little overlap between climbers, canyoneers, cavers and arborists equipment- and systems-wise. Google has turned up all sorts of things that seem that they'd have some application in the other disciplines, but no none around here seems to know anything about it. Maybe I read too much.... I'd say in general you're right about that. I've been caving almost as long as I've been climbing, though I don't get underground as much as I once did (more to do with time, nothing to do with wanting to go). I use a lot of the same systems in both worlds, but definitely use some different ones when caving. More than a couple of my partners have looked at me sideways like I have 3 heads after seeing me pull out one of my old ascending setups.... I used to explore a bit and that lead to a lot of, well... um, ascending vertical sqeezes/chimneys that were way to muddy to just climb and too tight to ascend by traditions means.CrazyCrazy Years later I'm much less into that kind of ascending.

Rope's, standard gear, techniques... each group seems to have their prefferred maddness that they follow.

Aric:

I do have a Kong FIFI in the aid bin if you still want me to go look at the dimensions...

Are you aware that the cord is threaded incorrectly in your original pic?

Hah, you posted while I was out measuring anyways - here is what i got:

hole - 9.2mm
slot - 9.3x21.8 end to end

Pretty close to the catalogue. Appears to be stamped so dimensional tolerances are probably not too tight.

I use 6mm in mine, despite the 7mm stamped on it.
