I'm so in. Lots of new ideas for this year, with innovation and bling. I need to get a hand swedger, more metal, and get some practice on the bandsaw.
Top Secret designs, of course.
Adatesman, will you be judging, or competing?
I have consulted with Feanor, Celebrimbor, and the Dwarfs of Khazad-dum and have quite a project in store.
For scoring, could there be different levels of points for hand machining, not just a flat 10 if it was all hand machined? I am looking at doing much more time consuming hand machining than just a standard forged friend knock-off or my entry last year.......

I’d like to suggest an organic class that goes through all the pull testing just like the regular cams. It would have to have limitations like needing to look and work like a cam and such.
I want to through this out there to save some money for people, I work in a metal shop that sells 6061 T6 alum flat bar in various widths and thicknesses and is sold by the linier foot. I can also get a hold of mild steel (couldn’t tell you the alloy), 304 SS, and 4140 chromoly round bar. I can’t get a discount but I’ll bet it’s cheaper than McMaster or some others, also you pay shipping. I’m not a supplier and I don’t want to deal with a bunch of orders so this offer only applies to competitors (sorry). (Admin let me know if I over stepped here)
Aric, are you going to link the old posts about last year’s comp? I ask because the Dirtbag cam thread you started had a lot of good info. Also can I resend you my Webcam for retesting at some point, not as part of this year’s contest?

Cool! I'll vote for the end of January too.
Do you think you could get any more sponsors? I like Trango well enough, but it would be cool if you could get a couple other companies behind it so you could offer first, second, and third place prizes in each comp?
The first one was really cool and I look forward to seeing what new designs are revealed in the next round. Thanks for all your hard work in putting this together.
Of course, I'll also need to get a Nicopress go-no go gauge. Although the ropes course one I have for 3/8" cable might go that small. I'll need to check into that.
Adatesman, can we send in cable lanyard samples for testing to make sure the swedging and material choices are bomber?

I've got one like the second one pictured, but I only paid like $20 for it at home depot.
The one I have worked well enough to hold a fall taken by sungam onto one of my home made cams, but I haven't pull tested anything that I have swaged with it.

I voted for end of january since end of november is much more busy for me with school, and it would be nice to have christmas break to be able to work on a cam.

Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas this year is: Hand swedger cable ferrules 6061-T6 aluminum CNC machine I'll have to be really extra good to get the CNC machine.

will 3/16" cable be sufficient for all cam making needs?
Valley Giants use 3/16" 1x19" cable, but they are U-stem. Would a single stem cable need to be thicker?
Also, I see that end mill bits can be had for about $15 from Mcmaster. Can they be reliably used in a drill press, immobilizing the bit and pushing the metal through?
And, more importantly, would that still count as hand machining for the scoring

For a single stem cam, 3/16" will be just fine, you would probably want to go with 7x7, or 7x19 though instead of the 1x19 unless you want a very stiff stem without much flex. 3/16" 7x7 cable is inexpensive, and the 304 stainless has a breaking strength of like 3500 lbs (15.5 kN) so it is plenty strong for a cam's stem.
As for the milling question, like Aric said, you don't want to do what you were sugesting. If you want to do it all by hand, just buy materials that are the thickness you need them so that you don't have to mill them down, or go with a design that is a bit less complex so that it doesn't require milling.
