Sooo... I need a new headlamp and I was looking at this Black Diamond "Space Shot" a while back. This thing looks like the answer to all my problems. Has anyone got any experience with this light? Does it hold up? What lights are comparable?

I have the "moonlight" - I like it - not the same life time as the new one, but nice and bright. (I like the BD Moonlight better than the Petzl Tikka because the Tikka's a little on the dark-ish side for my likes) - d.

My brother has one he loves it. He wears it on our grueling night hikes. Its lasted some tough falls too. Bright still.

It's not fair to compare the Petzl Tikka and the BD Moonlight (both are strictly LED headlamps) to the BD Spaceshot (although it does utilize a back up LED for when you don't need alot of light, which is a very cool feature). The Spaceshot is a really good headlamp. It's a bit on the heavy side (it uses 6 AA batteries [a NiMH rechargeable is also available for it too]). However, since the battery pack is not on the headlamp itself, but rather on a separate strap, so actually the weight isn't on your head it is around your neck/on your belt/over your shoulder. This feature makes the headlamp ideal for cold weather usage. You wear the battery pack under your clothes. That way the batteries stay warm and last MUCH LONGER than typical headlamps where the battery pack (on the headband) is out there exposed to the cold air. Comparable headlamps would be something like a Petzl Zoom or if you like the "separate battery pack on the strap" feature, look at the Petzl Arctic (essentially a modified Zoom).

I have the Petzl Zoom belt. Same as zoom I think but with a battery pack that is attached to a cord so that it can be worn under clothing for cold weather. It comes with a halogen and a regular bulb. With the halogen light in it this thing is freakin BRIGHT. Very bright. It's great.
