So I'm looking at this pile of gear on my living room floor and I got to thinking - "There's got to be a better way to store this stuff." (actual brain quote) Is the Pile O' Crap method the standard or does anyone have a better way to store climbing gear? I'm sure my grandfather the engineer would have a pegboard with outlined spots for each cam and stopper and after thinking about it this might not be such a bad idea.

I like this question... I've had my gear all placed inside my pack... I'm in a new house(old) with a great peg board above a great workshop(this was the selling point*) I SAW in my mind: my gear, all nice and "Martha Stewart like" on this board... now that I'm in...and I'm ready to unpack... I haven't a clue on how or what to do.. *a weeee bit overwhelmed, can't see past my nose, to save me ...* T

I only have sport gear, but it all fits in the front closet. The draws are on my spare daisy chain which is looped with a biner. The rope I either leave flaked in its tarp on the top shelf or I coil it (butterfly I think it's called) and hang it from my other daisy. Harness, shoes, chalkbag, and other odds n' ends all get clipped to the second daisy with biners. I would normally prefer to store everything in a basement, but I'm on the 10th floor in a building without air conditioning, so the front closet is about as cool as it gets. W

I have a room in my house dedicated to school and gear . I keep all my hardwear in those big rubbermade "action packer" things. All I have to do to go climbin' is grap those toss em' in the honda and go. Load the pack with what we need and put the lid back on to keep "curious observers" from takin' it.

I use a couple of those rubbermaid plastic totes. Works great for storage and throwing in the back of the truck on road trips.

I have most of my gear for climbing in "the game room" a seperate bedroom full of toys, haulbags, portaledge, motocross gear, bicycle tires, 9 ropes, fishin' gear... all of it tries to fit in there, but it regularly overflows into the living room and sometimes out into the yard! I used to use those bin boxes but repacking over and over got old. Jeff

I took a four foot piece of webbing and tied both sides to wires on the under side of my closet shelf. I just clip all my gear to this "closet sling" and it makes it real easy to make gear selection/inspection/cleaning. If I'm in a hurry to get to the crag....... untie the sling and shove the whole mess in my backpack.

Gear Storage?? What's Gear Storage?? Do you mean to tell me that you are supposed to store the stuff? I thought that you were supposed to wear the full rack 24/7 so that you get used to the weight and the balance and at night your nuts and protection are always right where you can grab them

My gear is split up into 3 crates. 1:trad gear 2:caving vertical gear 3:top rope gear Go to your local drug store and look out back near the dumpster, they usually have stacks of plastic crates that their stock comes in. They make AWESOME storage containers and they are all stackable [ This Message was edited by: jerrygarcia on 2002-09-23 07:14 ]

I would never pile my gear in my living room - I prefer to pile it in my bedroom. Some great ideas, I loved the "closet sling" idea, very imaginative... and the milk carton crate idea, another simple yet great idea. Why the hell didn't I think of either of them sooner? I'm an engineer too! But try not to think about that the next time you drive over a bridge.

I have a bunch of the Rubbermaid Roughtotes. 18 gallon size. 1 for ropes, 1 for rock gear, and 1 for general camping stuff (compass, first aid kit, TP, water bottles, etc) - different colors of course so I can tell them apart. I then have a larger, long storage bin (30 gallon maybe?) for mountaineering gear - ice axes, crampons, hiking poles, snowshoes, snow pickets, overboots, stove, etc. All this is stored in a large closet, along with 4 sleeping bags, 5 backpacks, 2 tents, a bivy sack, and a ton of fleece, down, and Gore-Tex. It's a pretty damn full closet, but that's what happens when you move from a 4 bedroom 2100 sq ft house into a 2 bedroom 900 sq ft apartment. Organization is a must. I still haven't figured out a decent spot for my bikes yet. [ This Message was edited by: tradguy on 2002-09-23 08:31 ]

I also use a large closet/storage area upstairs, but my climbing gear is all in a rubbermaid foot locker (larger than an action packer) and I simply sort from that to my pack, depending on what I need. I also like the closet sling idea, it would be very easy to sort.

I keep my gear in plastic totes. I found some that fit under my carpet kit in the back of the truck (out of sight). I keep all of my trad gear in one tub and my aid in another and I have a 3rd tub that does not go in the car and it has all of my other gear like extra slings, old ropes and what not. I keep my camping stuff in a 4th tub. I dont like to put my cams in a back pack I find that the wires are more prone to damage.

Does anyone find that their cam wires get a little messed up when you pack all your gear together in a bag? Does anyone pack their cam separately because of this?

I used to use the Pile O' Crap method, until I found the better way. In a spare closet, I hung hooks and pounded in big nails. Now, my webbing, slings, rack, and all types of other misc gear from walking poles to snowshoes hang freely. I also bought a small and cheap wood shelving unit. Kind of like a bookshelf and put other things on that, like my helmet, first aid kit, etc. Now everthing is organized and I can actually find something specific without digging. If you have a spare closet, or a closet you can organize and have extra room in, I suggest some hooks and things to hang stuff on. Steve

Im an engineer who was thinking about designing some sort of device that would hold everything at home and also transport it to the crag. I take it form this thread that there is a market?? And also does anyone out there know if something like this already exists???

The LARGE rubbermaid (or other cheaper brand) bins are pretty nice - runs around $10. Easy to have a trip ready - just throw it in the back of a truck and go. Makes a nice camping table too. If you have a ton of gear you can stack a couple of them in a corner - just make sure the stuff you use often is on top. I have seen a couple of friends use the tool peg-boards for hanging gear and it seems to organize everything nicely.

Go to Home Depot and get yourself a pine shelving unit for about $4o. Then get some plastic ventilated boxes and you are set. You can also add pegs or hooks to the frame to hang gear and rope.

I just have 2 back packs. All my basic sport gear is in one, always ready to go and trad stuff is in another. When I go climbing, I won't be alone, so why not keep it in two packs to share the pack animal joy. In one apt I was in I kept my climbing packs behind my bedroom door. One on the floor and the other hung right above it on the bedpost. I couldn't open the door all the way, but I am skinny.

I have two packs one a great backpack that fits good with my sport stuff and the other is one of those small overnight haulbags by metouilus with all my trad/aid gear and other rope. I just repack for each trip what I need. Kinda like the bin idea though might try that. Then I have an old big truck box that locks that I take on trips to put all my gear in so it doesnt get ripped off!!!

I use a long coat rack.. one of those with like 6 hooks in a row. nailed it to the closet wall. use slings to hang everything on inside there. It's cool and dry, and works pretty well.
