"black diamond" jackets are selling at costco. they seem pretty well built but what's the deal with them? i understand that it is not the same company out of slc, but just wondering if anyone knows anything about the company, quality, etc. thanks.

I've never been inside a Costco but I went to a Sam's club years ago. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's probably some wierd brand with a Black Diamond model. Maybe the brand is Yoshirikashisuko (printed only on the tag) and the model is Black Diamond (emblazened all over the jacket). They had $100 steel bikes whose model name was "titanium". Shit like that happens all the time. I'd say buyer beware.

the tag says black diamond on it, (see attatchment) but it is obviously not bd (slc). (bd's logo has the "c" within the diamond.) thanks for the reply...

I have seen a BD tag like that before. A couple years ago I ordered a BD fleece off of Sierra Trading Post and it has the same kind of tag. I think it is just really old.

I've seen that tag on authentic BD stuff before too. I wonder if it's a logo denoting a lower line of clothing only goods? It's possible they got a stack of overstock that's 10yrs old and that's the old tag. It's also possible that they begged (successfully) to get BD to build them a low end BD labeled product. It's also possible that it's nice high end stuff and it's cheaper because they buy in bulk. It reminds me of the demise of several brands of bicycle. First there was Mongoose. The Ibex with triangle frame tubes, full DeoreDX, man, that thing made me drool as a kid. Now you can buy a Mongoose that's lower quality than anything they built 15 years ago in a department store. The same is true for Schwinn and Diamond Back. They dropped their quality and pandered to big box stores. They all have a high end still available at bike shops but the name is so tarnished that it's a moot (not moots) point.

STP still sells a lot of Black Diamond stuff; NOT the same company as the SLC one. FYI, theres also a Black Diamond that makes bumpers and stuff for Jeeps.

http://www.blackdiamondsportswear.com/ i just talked to a bd (slc) rep and apparently both sides are getting mix ups. bd in slc is technically name "black diamond equipment", whereas bd in vermont is black diamond "sportswear". i'm sure lawyers are salivating over copyright infringement. as far as integrity of bd (vermonts) equip.??....thanks for the help.

There are a lot of things out there using the term "black diamond". Until the 80's, it was used to denote the "hard" stuff on ski resort slopes. All the badass people ski'd the black diamond runs, so obviously if you had equipment associated with the black diamond moniker, you were just a little closer to badass. Interestingly, on the company's website, their FAQ...number three:
In reply to: Is Black Diamond Sportswear and Black Diamond equipment one and the same? No,we are in no way affiliated or connected. We are a soft goods company that produces top of the line base layer, outerwear and accessories, they are a technical hard goods provider. After reading about them, the costco clothing may not be all THAT bad. They use Alpaca wool, almost all of their line is made in the USA (doesn't really matter to me so much, but it does to a lot). --Andy P

Ha, I just bought one of those jackets a few days ago. Seems alright, but it's not going into my climbing wardrobe.... rather, a jacket for work to replace the six inches of cotton work clothing companys use for insulation. I'll take a cheap softshell over that bulky carhardtt crap any day. What the hell, it's like 25 bucks.

It's funny that this Black Diamond thing came up. The second circuit court of appeals just ruled in Black Diamond Equipment's favor in a trademark case against Black Diamond Sportswear (BDS was seeking damages because it had the name first). The court case was # 06-3508-cv and it was decided on 10/5/07. Eli

Eli, are you a lawyer? I'm in law school right now and I need some climber lawyers to tell me it's possible to do both.

There are lots of lawyers who climb. They tend not to be 1st or 2nd year associates at big firms though. There are still plenty who climb hard and are pretty successful, Randy Vogel being one. You have to prioritize and make it happen though. You'd better schedule a day off classes next year and get to it!

I used to work at a ski mountain and the vests we were issued were Black Diamond Sportswear. We also carried their fleece in the gear shop - I didn't have any issues with it but I only wore it at work. With some obvious exceptions, I've always felt that you get what you pay for. After looking at the construction of their jackets it looked to me like they wouldn't hold up to abuse, but that's just my opinion.

There's another climber i know at UCH, Colin, goes by scuclimber on this site. Nice guy, climbed with him once in the valley. You might see if he's still getting out much. Who knows, he might even be in McAllister tower.

*waves* I asked her if she'd been climbing recently, and she laughed at me! Pfft. The library is starting to look pretty tempting, could go free, and even some opportunities to place pro. You first.
