Thinking about heading to Mt. Rushmore this summer and was wondering if someone can recommend an area for family friendly climbing in the area. Top roping preferable but if it is EASY sport/single pitch trad that would be OK too.

There's a ton of "family climbing" in Custer State Park as well, but no comprehensive current guidebook---Touching the Sky by Paul Piana is out of print.
Herb and Jan Conn were Needles pioneers and some (but by no means all) of their routes are easy; see The Adventure Climbs of Herb and Jan Conn by Lindsay Stephens, Sharp End Publishing, 2008

I can climb up to 5.9 trad/5.10 sport. My wife and kid climb 5.7-5.8 TR

I've done a couple family trips there - tons of routes all over the place that fit what you want to do. Many of them are easy to TR = some not so much of course. But many routes are visible in their entirety so it's easy to choose nice safe routes. But beware - there are a few bolted routes that get easier near the top but the guy who put them up didn't bother putting any bolts for a very long way which can get interesting.

I agree with others about getting a guide book, they'll help a lot.
Start here.
Middle Marker has 2 simple routes on it. Solo System is an easy top rope or lead route and Star Dancer to the right of it is an easy lead. For more easy routes head over to Toy Boat area, park on the pull off just before Breezy Point campground.
On any given day in the summer you'll find other climbers all over the Rushmore area, many local, ask around for a face to face conversation about your looking for.
