Saludos(greetings), I'm a local climber from Puerto Rico. Regarding your concern, it is pretty much the same as in any other part of the US, or any other country. My advice is to get in contact with the local climbing comunity, so you may know ahead where to go, places to visit, ect. Here are some helpful links: Facebook group of the Local Climbers Association(Asociacion de Escaladores de Puerto Rico-A.E.P.R.I.) . http://www.facebook.com/groups/90151405203/ Facebook group of Climbing PR (local climbing group) http://www.facebook.com/climbingpr For info and gear, you can check out Acampa in Facebook: www.facebook.com/AcampaStore As for safety, it helps to keep a tourist low-profile, and avoid to wonder off alone on the main cities at late hours.(remember safety in numbers). Still, don't limit yourselves to explore the Island night-life. Hope this info helps you. There is a lot of fun climbing here....

Please take in account the population density of Puerto Rico vs. the rest of the US, and of Western Europe Countries. Puerto Rico is an island roughly 100miles long x 35miles wide, with a population of approx 3.7million people, most of them (almost 2 million) living within or in the vicinity of the main cities. Because of this there is the false notion that is a very unsafe place to visit or live, but is like any other place...One always hopes things get better(but hey, still haven't have any random mass shootings on schools or campus, or shopping malls by unstable individuals, so I guess it could be worst)... I suggest to take a chance to visit Puerto Rico and judge by yourselves..

Hey, I´m not telling people not to go anywhere. BUT anyone who thinks the crime rate in Puerto Rico is like everywhere else is completely insane or so inured to a culture of criminality that their judgement is screwed. A comparatively densely populated country in Europe (say Belgium, the drug gateway to Europe) will have a murder rate less than 1/25th and an insanely densely populated place like Singapore even less.
