Looking for a place to take my family (of newbies) climbing while we're in Riverside, CA for the week prior to Christmas. Any suggestions for places to set up a top rope near Big Bear (or anywhere relatively close to Riverside)? Appreciate the help!

Well, there's always Joshua Tree. You could try the Riverside Quarry, Big Rock, or Mt. Rubidoux.

While in Riverside look up at the mountain with a white cross at the top. That's Mt. Rubidoux, and it has lots of large boulders making for small top rope problems. Park at the bottom and hike up to the top, I suggest Joe Brown boulder and Half-Dome, right next to each other and fun for a large group with more than one rope. Range of difficulties. Big Bear has a ton of sport climbing areas, but most are probably inaccessible due to snow conditions.

Schoolhouse rock at Riverside Quarry, or Big Rock would be my recommendation for being close to Riverside. Obviously you can't go wrong with J-Tree, but you're looking at 1.5 hours from Riverside, and you need trad gear for most any TR you want to set up. If neither of these issues is a problem for you, that'd be the place to go.
