i'm thinking about building a woodie in my garage and i'm wondering what the best/cheapest way to get holds would be. i've thought about asking if my local gym would want to sell any, and i know some companies put together a random assortment depending on wall incline, level of difficulty, and how much you want to spend. anybody have any input?

SoIll sells their rejects from quality control for a discounted price. None of them have anything that affect performance. They just dont look perfect.

You can usually find some good deals on ebay and a lot of hold manufacturers sell their reject holds for cheap.

How do you go about getting these reject holds? I tried searching online, but couldn't find anything.

You can may your own fairly easily out of wood scraps. Make sure you take plenty of time with the sander though.

You can make small crimps from strips of 1/2 x 2 or other sized wood. Drill holes to counter-sink screws or bolts. I've gotten good deals on used holds through ebay, and bought cheap new holds from synrock. Also factory seconds from escape climbing. Finally, some companies will give free samples if you pay shipping - check around. Atomic just had a giveaway of some really nice crimps a few months ago.

Another way to make your own. Go out and find rocks that would make nice holds. Or purchase a set of holds. Fill a shallow box with sand. Press the rocks/holds into the sand and remove, leaving the negative. Mix up a batch of Bondo and pour into the negative space. Let it set for 24 hours. Remove, level out the back sides, drill a hole and attach to your wall. I have also made hang boards the same way. The bondo collects the sand giving a nice texture to the holds. They are cheap and durable.
