I realize this is a stupid question considering I've never even done it before.
I'm kind of at an impasse with my job situation. I could probably keep going with it and maybe make money someday but it really doesn't make me happy. I really enjoy being outside and think that I would enjoy being a guide of some sort. God's been kicking me in the butt to make a change so I'm trying to figure out what it is I need to do.
Any ideas on how to get a job doing something like this? I know there are technically degrees from schools out west and there's places that offer courses on mountaineering techniques. I didn't know if some places might hire you and train you up.

Well if you want to be a rock, ice, alpine, or mountaineering guide you would be well off to get your AMGA certification first. Accept in special situations, most respectable companies require their guides’ to have a AMGA cert.

As the old proverb goes, be careful what you wish for, you might get it.
Mountain guiding might be for you. But I suspect happiness in that line of work has more to do with being a people person than with enjoying being outside.
I've known people who've made their hobby their job and have come to hate both.
Perhaps you can line up a little part-time work in guiding/teaching and see how it fits?

Good to know about the cert courses.
My main problem is that I live in Alabama. I've applied for jobs in TN and CO but nothing has come through. I really need to move out to an area, continue in my line of work, and then possibly branch out. I'll just have to see.
