Anyone interested in getting together for some trail days at Franklin between now and the Fall, or in getting together for one big Trail Day and Crankfest sometime late in October?

Right now a few of us in the central WV/VA region are trying to put together a gathering interested more in climbing than in partying.... not that we don't party, but it ain't the reason we drive hundreds of miles and carry all this gear.

We'll likely camp at Yokums for access to the widest range of crags after our labors, and to help support local businesses. Food and beer will be a personal choice and responsibility, not the focus. The cost will be whatever you want to spend on however many nights you want to stay. Spaces will be reserved, but they'll be on a first-come, first-served basis. Ronin will make breakfast, and if you're around when it's made, you'll be welcome to it. Evenings will include at least one discussion of first response and one walk-through of self-rescue.

The goal of this rendezvous will be to get to know more about West Virginia and Germany Valley in particular, to give back to a great little crag that has seen far more visitor than volunteers, to meet and/or reunite with some great people, network with some regional climbers, and spend more time cranking and seeing new rock than drinking and talking about it.

Interested parties can pm me here or call me at 540-280-3714.

Thanks-

mg/R

Ronin,

If I was on the east coast, id come for sure. I know you work hard to keep franklin a nice safe crag and I HOPE other people who have used this crag will thank Ronin by coming to do some clean up action.
One thing I wanted to add, close camping camping be found at the Thorn Spring Camp Ground. Its near some of Wva's most beautiful cave systems. They have various cabins that can hold up to like 80 people and tent sites + showers. Contact Leah at Thorn Spring 304 358 7737. Take 220 south out of franklin for about 4 minutes and turn left on dry run road. Look for thorn spring park signs.

Thanks Dave, jman, and Topper- it's a start.

Now... where are the rest of you bubbas and bubbettes who crank at Franklin? We need to address this trail issue, folks... WV is in the verge of a major shift in attitudes, with the construction of Corridor H and a lot of new money and influence is coming into the region from points North. Good relations with the landowners can no longer be taken for granted, even where open access has long existed.

I am interested. I just hope the dates will work out. I can never predict with much accuracy what my schedule will be past a week (even that can be sketchy). But if you give me some solid dates I can have a better shot at being there.

I have only been twice, but hope to go much more often.

What exactly needs to be done?

Of course I would prefer to limit any grueling landscaping work until the weather cools a good bit – not frozen, just cool.

Mike,
You know I'm in.
I have one other definitely and possibly two more that I'll drag down.
I'm with topper on setting goals for projects. The main approach stairs/hill sure could use work, and of course erosion control in areas at the cliff base.
Oh yeah... I'm looking forward to the burritos!

:D

Re: heat- yes, we would like to wait for the incredible heat and Cambodian humidity to fall off, just a bit... thus the fall scheduling. (Besides, anyone knows that Fall and Winter are the prime seasons for WV... unless you are SERIOUSLY INTO PAIN, and bugs, and DEET, and sweat....)

As for goals- I agree that we need to stabilize the initial hill approah, and make it very clear to everyone just where the new trails are between the walls. We tried this in the past, of course, but folks tended to follow their dogs/gravity/bovine impulses and either tear or trample down barricades, markers, tape, etc. Perhaps we'll go with reflectors, set high enough to make it a pain to vandalize them, but obvious enough to make it hard-to-impossible to ignore them.

I'm going to start shuttling in materials for steps for the section above the road, beginning sometime in the next three weeks. After that, I'll start getting together a priorities list from you folks and anyone else who'd like some input and is willing to back up opinions with action.

Thanks again.
