I'm thinking of getting a Trango Cinch for belaying and solo self belay. I couldn't find anything on the Trango website, and the info on this site seems minimal. Does anyone know much about this thing? Think it's as safe as a Gri Gri for self belay? It seems to be the same thing but smaller, lighter, and able to accept a larger range of rope sizes.

I have not climbed with any device more simple/goof-proof for TR self belay. However, it does not feed correctly for self belay rope-solo, unless aiding. To me, it's strengths lie in TR self belay, all diameter lead belay and TR belay, however, I find it less than perfect in the lowering and rappelling department, but hey- it's 30% lighter and MUCH MUCH less cumbersome than a gri-gri. Also, remember, it is a NEW WAY of belaying. When you get your hands on one, you will understand. jer

Do you think it's an easy way to confuse someone who is newer to belaying sport, TR.

i hadnt heard the cinch had been released, although i'm not suprised. it looks like an excellent device, but i'd want to mess with it quite a bit before trusting it on solo work. that said, rumors have started to surface that Petzl has responded to the Cinch's weight issue and we may see an improvement or two on their device in the near future....

I called Trango direct the other day and asked about the Cinch. I was told it was not officially out yet, but would start shipping in... a couple of weeks???... don't remember for sure now, but soon. I do note that a shoreline catalog I have had for about a month has the Cinch in it though, so has shoreline been backordering them??? Alon :)
