Joe suffered a heart attack while climbing at The Gunks and failed to recover at the age of 51, March 14, 2012. He did not feel good while climbing asked to be lowered and upon reaching the ground he was not responsive. He was a world class ice climber and appeared to be in great shape. Not sure how to anticipate an accident/trajedy such as this.

My condolences to all who knew and loved him. Sounds like he contributed a lot to the climbing community, and it's sad to hear of such an early and sudden passing.
Since this is not technically an accident, I will be moving this to the 'In Memory Of' forum.

In memory of a great iceclimber, a wonderful person, and a splendid figure of the ice-climbing scene of the Northeast and the US and a great loss for all of us ...
