Climbing after knee replacement??

Looking at knee replacement(s) down the road and I'm kinda' curious if anyone has experience with the return to climbing? Also, what, if any, restrictions, adjustments, changes did you have to deal with?

My ortho is recommending against them in the immediate future and is concerned about how it might affect climbing but cannot provide any anecdotal evidence and everyone I know who's gotten a replacement has been all "why the hell did I wait sooo long"

Thanks for any feedback!

My wife had one knee replaced. She was climbing on it two months after surgery and won her division at the 24HHH competition 6 months after surgery by climbing 60ish routes. It was about a year after surgery before she had total range of motion back, but that was only the last few degrees of bending. She is climbing way better without the pain! She had a Smith and Journey athletic model knee installed.

Thanks for the reply - good news and great outcome!

How bad were things when she went for the knee and, if you don't mind my asking, what age? I'm 56

She was 58, and her knee was crooked and painful all the time. It was pretty bad. Three years later and she still says she wishes she had had it replaced sooner.

I would caution against bouldering in particular. Every fall is a groundfall. Remember, titanium will not heal if damaged, and revisions (second knee replacements) are generally associated with poorer outcomes than first replacements. Take good care of the first one!

Thanks. Already NOT a boulderer - ground falls SUCK! Pretty sure you mean take care of the first replacement - the original knees are pretty shot at this point!! 3 ACL reconstructions, the most recent dating back 20 years and 80% of the meniscus removed in the first one 30+ years ago = pain and reduced function but I still play and ski 100+ days a year. just not at a level I'm happy with!
