Here is the problem I only have two ropes one that's a 70 meter and one that's a 50 meter. I don't want to drag the 70 around all day is it going to screw me on rappels there????? Its been awhile since I have been there and I can't remember if a 50 will work.

Most folks seem to use 60m or longer ropes at the Gunks. I've used both a 50 and a 60m rope there, and sometimes have come up short on rapping on the 50 (having to downclimb 10 - 20 feet). Might be a pain to carry around the extra weight of the 70, but it'll be worth it. The extra length is nice when pitches zig-zag, which is why a fair amount of ppl like double ropes at the Gunks.

Walk down! The descent via the Uberfall is a good tradition, and if you're close to that section it's as quick as a multipitch rappel.

In reply to: Walk down! The descent via the Uberfall is a good tradition, and if you're close to that section it's as quick as a multipitch rappel. What he said. And plus, no matter how far down you are from the uberfall, you can always walk a bit on the clifftop trail until you get to a rappel station that suits your rope length. Rappel stations are everywhere there. If you use the new Williams guide it will even tell you what rope length you need for each rappel and has the stations marked clearly on the cliff topos. K. p.s. hey Topper! I heard tell you weren't climbing anymore! Good to see you around, and in my neck of the woods no less!
