I going to buy a tent in the near future and was wondering if anyone had good advice to share. I'd like a three person, three season tent and weight isn't a major consideration. I won't be backpacking with it. I was thinking about the REI basecamp 4. Has anyone used this tent? Any and all advice is appreciated.

I have an REI Taj 3 that works great for two, but is heavy to pack in. I think it would work reasonably well for 3 but be tight. Since weight isn't a consideration you will probably want to go larger. I can, however, attest the the great build quality and water shedding ability of this tent. East set up and take down as well.

i have a mountain hardware lightwedge 3. i really like it allot, easy to set up, roomy, good accessories (pockets and such), good ventillation and i have really put it through hell and back for the last 4 years. its starting to show some wear, and i've had to patch some burns (stupid stove) and crampon holes (stupid me), but with a little seam grip its still going as strong as ever. we've had some of the most serious thunderstorms the midwest can throw at us this year, she's done mighty well.

I second what davidji said. I have a cheap big three person coleman, and I also have a very light Mountain hardwear trilight 2 (1.5 persons). We only get two persons inside my tents. Most of the camping around here is for climbing, but we carcamp, so the weight advantage is none, while the size advantage of the cheap one is bigger. Weather is not very cruel around here, so either one is a good shelter. So, basically, if you are in my conditions (benign weather, carcamping), then a cheap big tent might be better allaround than a specialized tent.

I haven't really considered a cheap coleman tent or anything similar because I still want the thing to be bombproof. Although I won't be backbacking, I've had to sit out some pretty heavy thunderstorms in other people's tents, and even a little water inside makes a huge difference. Also, a good friend of mine went that route (bought a coleman) and woke up with an inch of water by his feet on it's first use. If people can recommend a cheap yet bomproof tent, that would be great, but I'd rather spend the money now on something that I'll love and is going to last.

I remember in the past some of the inexpensive ones got good reviews on outdoorreview.com. As for waking up in a pool of water, I agree that some tents will protect you even when they sit in a deep puddle, but it's good to pitch it so it won't be in a pool of water. It's tempting to pitch it at a slightly low spot, but safer from water to pitch on a slight hump.

I dont know what your price range is, but REI-Outlet has the Sierra Designs Hercules AST 3 on sale for about $325. That is one bomb proof tent. A bit heavy, but you said you would not be bacpacking with you so that might not be a problem.

I bought a Sierra Designs Alpha convertable. It works great and its not too heavy. Its easy to set up and in 4 season mode its bomb proof. It was expensive in Alberta so I baught it on ebay for 2/3 the price and had a buddy of mine in the US send it to me.
