I've noticed that flexibility is limiting me on some climbing routes, and I've just always had poor flexibility in general. Are there any recommendations out there other than the common stretches such as reaching for my toes?

hypermobility is a natural advantage. The ballet won't let you in without it!

Since its genetic, you can increase it with yoga.

Try searching for Relax Into Stretch or Stretching Scientifically. Both are useful books. My guess is that you need to open up your hips. A Swiss ball can be useful, too, especially if you're just getting started. Good to work on this stuff!

I was a bodybuilder before I discovered climbing and had 0 shoulder flexibility. Yoga has sent my climbing fitness and flexibility through the roof.

Flexibility is good. However, flexibility without stength in climbing is useless. If you cannot use your leg at full strength when it is out stretched what good is it being flexible.

Go to a yoga class and watch some of the people there. Especially the woman, some are like rubber dolls. They can put any body part behind anything yet they have no muscle strength. You can tell just by looking who has strength in their poses and who are just like gumby.

My yoga instructor drilled this point home all the time. A good way to improve flexibility AND strength is plyometrics.
