Welcome one and all to the 2009 Trango Homemade Cam World Cup DISCUSSION THREAD! Have you ever fondled an old-school milled Friend and wondered how hard it would be to make your own? Why not put your curiosity to the test – safely, simply and with a possibility of winning prizes? Wood cams, steel cams, aluminum… whatever your heart and mind desire are eligible for entry. Will the next revolution in climbing gear happen right here? Who knows, but what have you got to lose?

And just in case you think you don't have the equipment or skills to compete, our Resident Lab Proctor, Adatesman, will be posting complete instructions on how to build a cam with a minimum of tools in the very near future. Keep an eye out for it, as you might find yourself surprised at just how easy it is!

All of the entries will be judged in a single division, but there will be prizes for the entry with the highest combined score and for the one that gets the most votes in the Beauty Pageant. Don't feel you have to build something that would actually be safe to climb over though.... An entry that's utterly weak but totally pimped to go after the Beauty Pageant prize is fine with us. As an example, an all-wood cam with ebony and mother of pearl inlay might not do so well in the strength tests but may have a decent shot in the Beauty Pageant. We'll still do the other tests since breaking things is fun, but if you ask nicely and it really is that pretty we may make an exception. For those who don’t enter, be sure to vote for the prettiest specimen when the time comes.

And just what, pray tell, are the prizes for the 2009 Trango Homemade Cam World Cup? For the overall winner: Trango Big Bros, sizes 1-4! And, for the winner of the Beauty Pageant: a complete set of Trango Ball Nutz!

Greta idea for a contest. However, the WINNER of the cam design contest doesn't WIN ANY CAMS?????

Laugh I know... I know... it was considered, but in the end, the Trango folk and I figured everybody who enters will probably already own a mess o' cams, so we went with something a little different.

Peering into the mind of a would-be cam designer, mayhaps yall are right. Quien sabe? Seems equally likely to be a poor college engineer student with a crappy rack.

I think of big bros as highly specialized pieces of gear. Few of the people who own them actually USE THEM for their intended purpose, with any kind of regularity.

Of all the strong trad leaders I know, only ONE uses them with any kind of frequency.

I may fit into the 'most' category on this one - I have bog bros and rarely use them. Why?

Their intended purpose scares the crap out of me!!!1111

Is it possible to expand this to pro in general, such as passive pieces design or are you just limiting it to cams?

This one will be just cams since figuring a way to fairly judge passive vs active gear would be a nightmare.

I'm hoping these sorts of competitions become a fairly regular thing, so perhaps we could do passive gear next time....

Looks like I didn't start work on a propane-fired foundry a moment too soon. When's the deadline for submission?

And just FYI, if you cannibalize a commercial cam for parts it shouldn't take more than an afternoon to make new lobes for it.

True, unless you're planning on casting them from bronze.

I can't wait to see a set of cams that looks like the Burghers of Calais.

I've now added something to that effect to the really fine print... plus a disclaimer, you know, in case one of you is dumb enough to lead out over your cam because, hey, it took first prize in the Beauty Pageant. Crazy

For clarity's sake: Are we allowed to build a cam not of our own design? For example there are some patented cams that I'd really like to build, but I'm not sure that's legal due to copyright and such. Ideas?
