when I see "homemade CAM competition" the essential ingredient of a CAM is the...... inclusion of a logarithmic cam spiral, which tricams have (although not constant angle) but big bros do not. I have no problem with allowing BBs in the competition, but maybe change it to Active Pro Competition or something.... or leave it. after all, making a good BB would be harder than making a forged friend

caution thread drift!!!!!!!! Ok, I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this or not, but I have made up an excel spreadsheet to give me the x and y coordinates of any logrithmic spiral, but I can't figure out how to import the data into solidworks, I know that you do this, so I was wondering if you could let me know. Thanks. Now back to the scoring of BB type devices.

it's been a few days since i've checked the thread. the rule changes are fair and i think they now assign points on the overall usefulness of homemade active pro. thanks for working everything out.

Great idea for a contest!!!!! At first I was like "what-eva" then after I remembered I was unemployed and the snow around here has been lacking, so I got busy. Finished today and am ready to ship it after a few cosmetic touch-ups. I'm gonna be a pompous fool and guess me units gonna snap at 40KN. heh!

I'll be drawing mine up in acadd but if I can get (x,y) I can work it out.

In reply to: Care to share your spread sheet? I'm having trouble with the math (to many years since trig). I'll be drawing mine up in acadd but if I can get (x,y) I can work it out. Sorry I didn't see this sooner, as I would be happy to share my spreadsheet with anyone who needs it. If you do just let me know and I can get it to you. I have it set up so that you can just put in a minimun crack size, and a cam angle and it will do the rest for you, if anyone is interested in it let me know.

I'm interested, although having spent a total of ten minutes in excel so far, maybe I should try and work it out for myself a little more before asking for help.

I will be going to J-tree in a couple weeks so I might just ship from there. I think it could be faster to wait an extra week and bypass customs.

I just found out about this last Saturday, I wish I had more time to engineer a couple of Ideas I have but I will still get at least 2 cams to you by the end of Feb (I hope). I have made other things but it never occurred to me to build a cam until I saw this competition, Thank You by the way. Other things I’ve made include camhooks, mountaineers axe, ice tools, porta ledge, and a nut tool. I was wondering about the cables that people use, all the cables I looked at, at the hardware store are only rated to 350lbs for 1/8 and 800lbs for a 3/16 cable. Is that enough or is there better cable out there?

Usually hardware is marked with the Safe Working Load (SWL) which is often about 1/10 it's break strength. Where as climbing gear is usually marked with the min. break strength. IE your 3/16 cable would be about 35kn and your 1/8 would be about 15kn.
