Since RC.com shut down, what have y'all been up to? How ya' been?

I'll start...

I'm climbing almost never. Covid pretty much killed my indoor climbing and since I live where I live, casual outdoor climbing is out.

I've found another gear whore activity: scuba and that is where more of my money goes now.

And you???

  • Changed my socks at least once.
  • Changed my address three times.
  • Changed my gender at least once.
  • Went to Galapagos once.
  • Dad died of cancer once.
  • Learned to cook better.
  • Saw a cool dog.
  • Got a new career.
  • Was in a highly-dysfunctional relationship.
  • Had a mental/ emotional breakdown and at one point didn't leave my bed for three months except to get food or use the bathroom.
  • Saw another cool dog.
  • Got fat. Might have been due to being sedentary for several years, or maybe it was that bean I ate.
  • Moved to a small town in what passes for 'the country' in these parts.
  • Went climbing a grand total of once in the last two years and it was a disaster—I couldn't do an easy mantle on a bolted 5.6 slab and had to bail.
  • Learned I can no longer do a chin up and can barely do a push up.
  • Said a tearful goodbye to the days of 11a being my off-the-couch grade.
  • Thought about learning humility, but decided ignorance and making excuses was better.
  • Started training to be able to do pushups and chin ups gain.
  • Thought about the cool dogs I've seen.
  • Vowed to be able to climb bolted 5.6 slabs again.
  • Got new socks for Christmas.
  • Logged into rc.com.

  • You know, the usual things one does in their 30s. I'm getting close to 40, and I've decided I am on board with the whole mid-life crisis thing. Not the version where you blow all your money on expensive toys, but the sort where you get heavy with thoughts of your misspent youth and then decide to 180 on the direction your life was moving in. I want to climb again this year. There's no gym nearby, but there are several crags, so I'm gonna try to lose some weight and then grind through V0s and 1s until I can move well enough to not injure myself. I don't know if I miss climbing, or if I just miss hanging out at the crag. Maybe both.

    I succeeded at becoming 40.
This is the best rc.com post of 2023.
I am the strongest climber of all current posters to the site.
I am not sure if this is actually happening or if this is a fever dream.

Got busy with teenage kids, developed Psoriatic arthrits, which took me out of climbing for several years and lack of exercise made me too fat to climb.

    Then got cancer, twice.

Then moved and unearthed my whole climbing rig. Most of it only used twice and still pristine .

Lately daydreaming of cliombing again. Starting all over

I am no doctor, but that sounds like too many times to be good for your health. Glad to hear you lived to tell the tale.

I've gone one and off climbing for decades, but this last time starting up again was really like starting from new. So much fatter. So much older. So many changes physically. It kinda sucks and is kind of magical at the same time. I only made it outside for a handful of sessions including one short road trip. I barely sent anything and what I did send was all easy, but just to be out again felt like coming home.

Hope you get the chance to get out on the rock again.

Just for shits and giggles, I dropped by to see if this place actually still existed. I cannot believe it does, and more so I cannot believe I remembered my password on the first try.

Update: I'm not dead, but I am turning 50 in three weeks (so pretty close to it). I stopped climbing for a while, but still get out on occasion with my 17 year old. I took him to Linville Gorge a couple years ago for his first multi pitch trad climbing. It was pretty phenomenal.

I forgot to add that around 2015 I got into obstacle course racing like Spartan. I got into some great shape, but got some nasty back problems in 2019. The past few years I just get into shape for ski season and take my kids to the mountains a couple times a year. My middle son can shred on a snowboard.
