24 hours later and I'm still pleased with this.
On Sunday we went to a cliff face that I hadn't been to before. One of the people had done some of the climbs, but eventually we moved to an unknown section. While belaying a partner on a bolted route, I eyed a line nearby. I kept looking at it, deciding that I could definitely do the first section, up to what looked like it would prove to be a good stance. After that, I had no idea what would happen. I could pick out what looked like my first few gear placements, to the point of what style & size I expected to get in.
So, after spending a bunch of time looking at this, I decided to go for it. None of us knew anything about the line - it just looked doable. I set off (with a lighter than usual rack) and got the climb.
I was so psyched - it's not often one gets to go to an area and pick a line with no foreknowledge. Usually there are folks around, guidebooks, perhaps even plaques....here it was just some good looking rock & my feeling it appealed to me.
My partners thought it was a nice climb also

Nice. Onsighting is definately my favorite. Nothing like getting inspired by a line and sending it base on your own assesment and no preconceived notion of grading.

I did something similar to that last year. It's an interesting challenge and a useful skill in the more adventurous styles of alpine climbing.

The next question is: Did you grab the guidebook and look up the grade after climbing it?
