Quite a few people seem to be interested in going to Smith for Spring Break (March 19-28 ), so we're going to have a mini-gathering then. If there are other times you'd like to come out, post in the Partners forum (or start a new thread here, if you want to try to get more people in) -- there are oodles of us in the area who'll hook up with ya. Smith Rock has over 1000 sport and trad routes ranging from Extremely Easy to Harder Than Hell, so there's fun for everyone. So far, the following people are in: dynoguy Oregon State University Mountain Club katydid -- one or both weekends betaben -- one or both weekends troutboy rckfreek therelic powderhound -- beginning definite maybes: climbinggirl33 shortfatoldguy -- second weekend climbs4fun -- one weekend PM your friends! Get 'em involved! Even if you can't make it the whole time, come on down. We'd all love to meet you. Camping is $4/night/person at the state park (I believe the showers are finally fixed, which is a serious plus), and includes a parking pass for the day use area. Tent camping only, smoking only in cars, cooking only in designated areas (so we don't burn the place down). I'm assuming most people will be coming via Portland or elsewhere in the Willamette Valley, but if you're coming from elsewhere or you plain old need directions, let me know and I'll add to this post. k.

No kidding about the weather! I really wanted to head up there last weekend and climb Super Slab but it was way too cold, or maybe I'm just a wuss. A gathering sounds awesome. FYI OSU(wow, two acronyms in a row) has spring break from march 19-28, so you might get a bigger turn out if we have it then. I could spread the word to the OSU Mountain Club, an illusrtius organization of which I'm a member.

Good idea. Would these dates work for others? k. PS Looks like I may be going to OSU (shut up, Russ) next fall, so I may be joining your illustrious organization, assuming they let me in.

Cool we have an awesome climbing scene down here. Also our new and totally awesome climbing gym is opening on wensday, just another reason to become a beaver. And you'll be about an hour and a half closer to Smith than Salem. What year are you and what are you studying? Let me know if you need any info on OSU.

So would March 19-28 for you college types (with us weekend types dropping in for a visit) work well? If so, let's get this thing going! Post up! If enough people can't make those dates, please suggest alternatives. Majority rules. k.

A few of us from MN will be out there for a few days in early March. I think we are flying in to Portland late Tuesday, March 9, and are planning on climbing all day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (March 10-12). Then we are probably going to head back to MN on Saturday. If anyone would like to join us, drop me a PM. Climb on! Craig

Craig, if you haven't already, you might also want to post these dates in the West Coast forum. Oh -- and bring your woolies, just in case. The weather's pretty unpredictable that time of year. ;) k.

April or May? Damn, I can't wait that long. If the weather isn't looking too bad I might be headed down there Feb 15-18 or 29 - March 3rd. I have a few people up here on the Olympic Peninsula interested, the more the merrier if anyone wants to go then. I'll post exact dates a little later on.

Folks, we can always do more than one gathering. Hell, if people would like a "monthly meeting", we can do that, too! I'll keep an eye on the thread for a few days and see what kinds of dates people suggest, and try to reach some sort of compromise. PM your friends -- get 'em involved. The more the merrier! k.

Craig, Smith Rock has been my local crag for 14 years. (I live in Central Oregon). March is primetime. Highs 50's to 60's, lows 30's to 40's. A really big pacific front will bring rain, but rain is still unlikely. Camping can be a bit cold, especially when the nights are clear of colds. What do you hope to climb? Calvin

Thanks Calvin! That weather sounds great (at least the 50-60's - considering that with the windchill it's like 40 degrees below zero in MN as I type this)! We are still in the process of planning the trip, and still haven't done much research. Are there any areas that you'd recommend (as "must climbs" at Smith Rock) - most us climb 5.9 to 5.10c/d on sport lead. Or are there any guide books that you'd recommend? Craig

Craig, Alan Watts has published the main guide for Smith. It is available but old, (repoint climbing shop right in the small town of terrebonne has it plus maybe some "other" guides.) A new one by him will come out at some point (hopefully soon). You can get some route information at http://www.smithrock.com/ (plus a bunch of other stuff). There use to be only a few sports routes in the range you are talking about but now there are a ton. Where you climb is very depend on day of the week and crowds. The Moons of Pluto 10d and Screaming Yellow Zonkers 10b are two musts. I know you don't know me from Adam, but I could give you a quick walk through tour when you visit. Calvin
