Hi
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a place to take a climbing holiday offering the following:
1. On-site climbing routes (by on-site I mean rolling out of bed to your very own climbing wall and real rock training routes) in the gardens of the hotel/hostel.
2. Access to a good range of routes within easy walking distance.
3. Access to local guides and/or climbing instructors.
4. Swimming pool...to relax a little.
5. Opportunity to meet other climbers from around the world.
Basically a purpose built climber's hostel/hotel.
I live in a stunning and very traditional village in the Spanish mountains with over three hundred routes on the doorstep and am looking to set up something like I have described above. Does that kind of thing already exist? Is there a demand for it?

For example, in Montagu / South Africa you can find http://www.debos.co.za . The climbing is not on their own premises, but in reasonable walking distance.
El Potrero Chico in Mexico also comes to mind (never visited there).
The idea sounds nice, but I think climbers are a rather independent bunch that would consider this "too easy". I mean, where's the sufferin' ?
If you can resist the temptation to gold plate things, and keep it reasonably priced, you could have a chance.

El Potrero Chico is the first thing that comes to mind.
If you are serious about it and have the money and means to get it started, I say you definitely go for it. It probably won't cost you much to get it started (other than insurance) since for the most part climbers will just be looking for a place to rest there head, and someone to give a little beta... A pool would be great to have though. You're going to have to keep it relatively inexpensive considering climbers generally don't have much cash. haha

Urca has the most easy-access routes, but anywhere you stay in the south side will be close to some climbing
2. Access to a good range of routes within easy walking distance.
The whole city is surrounded by rocks, actually, the whole city is covered by rocks within its territory. You can get to most spots by public transportation that will leave you on the beginning of the trail to the bases.
3. Access to local guides an/or climbing instructors.

ever heard of Copacabana beach or Ipanema beach?
5. Opportunity to meet other climbers from around the world.
Brazilian climbers for sure, if lucky enough from other places too.

Sorry, I didnīt see that you were asking about the HOSTEL/HOTEL itself, I tought you were asking about an area, in general.
Anyway, in Urca, there is a hostel with special deals for climbers, and I heard there is a hostel in botafogo for climbers too that even has a bouldering wall.
But anywhere you stay in the city, even if not specifically built for climbers you give what you want.

Go to Potrero Chico
Climbing Wall are a 5 min street walk from camping site.
Routes from 5.8 to 5.13īs form 1 pitch to 22 pitches
Guides and Instructors available
Public Swimming Pools right by the rocks or Private depending were you stay. (Cerro Gordo have a pool)
In Summer you can find Climbers from all parts of Mexico and Texas, in Dic-Jan you can find climbers from all the world.
And if you live in spain you already speak spanish so is a plus for you.

Hey,
at a first look at your question it seems that you are looking for a place to GO.
And many people or replying with places to go, I was one to do so.
But regarding the setting up a place for climbers: well, many areas in the world count with shelters, hostels or accommodation next to the climbing spots. I know at least 4 or 5 climbers who live and run such places in the interior of RJ, SP or MG states. In the US you can find many examples as well.
As far as I know they profit and are well appreciated by the climbing community. When I go away on a climbing trip that is more than 3-days long I choose a bed and a roof better than a tent and a sleeping bag.
But I must say that a few of the places I know have the option of getting a room or camping in the backyard, each climber will choose what better fits he's taste/pockets.

Climbers, (like students) tend to be pretty cheap. (In fact a lot of climbers are students). At the most, they are looking for the price range of a hostel. Potrero is an example of camping and "cheap hut" lodging next to excellent and developed climbing.
I doubt that the owners make that much money on it, but that is just speculation.

Some questions though:
How far are you from a major city? What is the time and cost to get to your town from this major city?
What are the food sources for climbers once they get there?
What kind of routes are these? Sport? Trad? How many pitches?
