Slick!!! I'll make sure, x-that last! I'll check with the wife about our schedule. If it's open I'll be there. I'll post back in a bit if I can come. Good thing it's not during bow season. Dave

Yeah, I originally wanted to schedule this event later in September, but put it closer to Labor Day for more daylight and because a lot of local climbers also hunt. Once deer season rolls in, they forget about climbing!

Wow! Jay has been busy getting "his" mountain ready for this event. I was out there yesterday and he and Jamie put up three new routes w/ at least three more scheduled before the event. The BAW cliff is going to have 4 four star routes side by side!! We have secured some pretty sweet gear giveawy stuff too. Camping is free. http://www.mtnsideview.com/sadkrock.html

Less than 20 people would be my guess. I'm sure we can find someone for you to climb with. I hope that you can make it.

Hey Todd -- Hope all is well with you and yours. Just spotted the notice of your gathering. Long ways for us Boston guys in a weekend but who knows. Also need to check with Bon re: family obs. Ed is nursing a sore back and is out of action for awhile. Been climbing with some young studs recently. One of whom badly wants to get out to the Daks. He could probably drive both ways while I nap! I will let you know. Got buried on both the approach and descent to Moby Grape on Friday by one of the YSs. Felt pretty bad until I learned I made it from car to base of Reppy's in 35 minutes. I think Alex did it in 20 however! We did the Kurt's Corner finish which was terrific. Also did the Eaglet Spire on Thursday afternoon. What a blast! --- Bill

Bill, you guys should come on over. You would love the new routes we just established out at the Black Arches Wall. And the Summit cliffs are stellar. Would love to see you again.

As long as it isn't pouring at least Alex and I are headed out from Mass. The Midnight Bouldering event did it for me. You guys are crazy. Any door or costume prizes for the event. I certainly won't be dazzling anyone with my bouldering skill!!!

I think Jay said something about stupid human tricks. You should be able to come up with something for that.

Bruce Monroe went to work drumming up donations and stuff from a dozen or more companies. Most of it is nice schwag for welcome bags etc., but there are a few nahce thangs in the mix. While I hope to see some high-calliber climbing, I'm not trying to draw the world-class elite only. There will be a lot of randomness thrown into the prize-awarding, so you have as much chance as anyone for some of them. Hope you can make it! |

If nothing else, two of us without a belayer/partner = problem solved!

I might be coming from Massachusetts as well on Saturday afternoon if I can get one of my climbing partners on board to split travel costs and driving. Hope things work out!

Almost there! This summer has been a busy one, trying to dress up the mountain to look nice for its coming out party. The Black Arches Wall now has 8 routes established on it, with 3 more in the wings that may (or may not) get done before the Festival starts, and several - lemme see...six - projects that definitely won't get finished in time. Whew! This place is wonderful. I got buzzed by a peregrine whilst working out there today. I've yet to see one nab a bird, but I keep hoping. I do get to see F-16s almost every time I'm there. Usually, they're flying right at eye level. Kinda neat. The Lower Measles Wall now has a sport route on it. "I Am Lesion" rides a 40' wave of slopers and finger holes to the top of the wall. I expect to give it a go next run by there. The Viewpoint is decent, though I may give it a quick brushing before Friday. Pine Tree debris and such on the slab... Note that "Puzzle" is either G or PG for leading, now that the upper crack is cleaned. The Summit Cliffs are ready to go, though I didn't get a chance to clean "Carl's Climb" I did do it with Jeremy a few weeks ago and it was clean enough to tackle on lead. The Prows are their usual sweetness. All is just about as ready as it's gonna get. Hope to see you there!

Jay Thanks for all the hard work at spiffing things up for the event! Alex and I are really looking forward to meeting you guys and reaping the benefits of your efforts. Hopefully Jason will be able to make it out as well. Todd -- do you have the morning coffee covered or is it up to me? Bill

Jay, Tood and Jamie --- Thanks for an absolutely terrific weekend. You guys are great hosts!!! Thanks for all the hard work you guys did over the last couple of weeks to get things ready for the gathering. Jamie Plumb Line looked awesome. I will be back to get on it. Tood great job on Estim! Got to get back and do the second pitch. Also thanks as always for the morning coffee. Jay, was it Parallel Lines the name of the climb at the Dark Arches Wall I took the hang on while seconding? Great route but dang pumpy! It has now become a "stretch" lead goal for me. Now I have the technique of switching in and out of the lay back to get the gear in I think I would have a shot at it. Special thanks to your wife for the hot chocolate and cookies!!! Thanks again, Bill

Kudos to anyone who put effort into this gathering. You all did a great job! Jay, Todd, Jamie - you and a handful of others were the face of this event, but I'm sure lots of folks I didn't even meet put in time and effort. Thank you all. It may be a labor of love, but labor (and lots of it) nonetheless. Great folks, great place, great climbing... can't wait to do it again. Todd, I've got a picture or two of you that you might like. Send me an email address. Jeff

Parallel Passage is the name, Black Arches Wall the crag. I fell on it over numerous attempts before finally just laybacking the whole thing, only pulling in at key spots for pro. The technique does increase potential fall distance - I took a 12 footer before managing a clean lead of it. But the layback on PP is actually pretty um, laid back. It isn't horribly strenuous, tenuous, or ridiculous. Just scary, as laybacks tend to be. |
