Well, I see some of you do not take this seriously, so... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=magnesium+carbonate+dust+inhalation&spell=1 And you thought it was a JOKE! WHO'S laughing NOW?

WHO'S laughing NOW? Yep still a joke. The amount of exposure and the size of the particles is going to have to be extreme. The silica content has to be high (quartz in the chalk), which there probably not much of in the commercial stuff. I did notice for chronic exposure to high levels a face mask did not offer protection. A respirator was recommended. So go ahead and wear the mask legless. You are not getting the results from it that you expected. My buddy runs a company the makes respirators though. I'll be happy to get you contact with him to purchase one. You stand more of a chance of contracting cancer from filling your car with gas. There is a proven connection there.

At last, someone realizes the danger! I TRIED to tell legless he needed a respirator, the fool just laughed! And just because the data sheets said no chronic damage known, don't let that stand in the way of good sense.

I'm certain that some people are equally as hazardous to climb around. Chalk dust has nothing on the toxicity of flatulance and fecal matter particulates. Be especially careful if you're hanging out with Dingus: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=g:thl250871720d&dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=ifcUa.9464%24GC.7852%40news02.roc.ny&rnum=4 Ed

In reply to: there is a sick amount of it floating around in most gyms... seriously were all gonna get cancer we're like coal miners... except we are gonna get white lung. when im climbing indoors ive started wearing the medical masks that they all wear in japan during allergy season. you sholdnt worry because chalk dust isnt really dangerous. its not like asbestos or smthng similar. unles the air is so full of it that you suffocate you dont need to worry.

In reply to: look...i dont know about cancer...but chronic inhalation of non-toxic dusts of a wide variety can lead to pneumoconiosis (black lung)... all indicators suggest chalk dust falls into the potentially black lung causing substances category.... except its white lung. actually... it is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcaneconeosis 8^)

I'm not changing my tune: avoid breathing that crap. Probably 90 percent of the stuff each of us breath is chalk we are placing onto our own hands. It is easy to minimise breathing it, don't use it. I try to make a calculated mental choice, do I want chalk on this particular route: or not. Sometimes I do. Interestingly, heres a survey which a fella posted on Cascadeclimbers.com. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=434382068437 He says: "Hi, my name is David Brinton. I'm a sports medicine fellow in Southern California doing a research project on exercise induced asthma in rock climbers. If you have 3-5 minutes to fill out a survey, I would be most grateful. It's totally anonymous, just follow this link to a survey I've set up on SurveyMonkey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=434382068437 Thanks, hope you all get to go climbing soon!!! " Lets all help him out and take the survey eh? Regards: Bill

I mix my chalk, two parts Createne one part MC. and put it in my shoes. It helps me climb more better. But I don't use it on my hands, and I don't think it should be used in bouldering caves,I use bacon greese. LIVE SIMPLE, SO OTHERS MAY SIMPLY LIVE!!
