I heard people talking about a climbing festival in Smith this fall back at the Leavenworth Rock Fest last Spring (2008). But I can't find any info online. Does anyone know anything about this?

Nothing planned at Smith this fall according to my friend at Mountain Gear who's usually setting up the festivals like at Leavenworth and Red Rocks. He said there might be something from vendors, but no festivals.

The Smith Rock Detour will be happening at Smith this year. It will be in September. You can check it out here. www.smithrockdetour.com

I usually keep in touch with Oregon events. So if you have any questions just ask me.

so is it $40 to park there even if you don't want to be involved in any of the goings on? I just wanna hike over to marsupials and avoid the crowd.

You just park in the normal parking area at the park. Then you can go climb wherever you want. The Detour is in a field south of the park. To sum this up, you just have to pay the $3.00 to park where you would if this wasn't going on.

so the $40 is just if you want to sit in on the "how to build an anchor, even though you are climbing in a sport climbnig arena" session. cool, i might actually do an end of the summer trip then!

No, the $40 isn't for clinics. I wouldn't take any clinics. I believe the package including clinics is $65. The $40 package is to camp at the festival, watch the movie, get the goodie bag, and eat some food while hanging out with other climbers. You can go climbing that weekend without attending the festival activities, but there is much more the the festival than clinics. I've been to lots of festivals and I enjoy the community aspect, but I hardly ever take clinics as I feel like they usually cater to beginners even whey they say they're for more advanced climbers.

Yea, the $40 is if you want to camp at the festival ground, and be able to eat their food and stuff. If you just want to go and look around, you just go park their at the festival, then walk around and look at what you want, and then leave when you are done. It is free to park at the main park, and then go climb whatever you want, whenever you want. Last time we were there, a few pros, Sharma etc. turned up. We also ran into Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden. At the festival they had a dyno wall, a couple slack lines, and a food court type thing. So pretty much all you need to do is go look for an hour or so in the evening, and then leave.

well thats good, so the festival is pretty much every reason not to go. crowds, people swooning over "popular climbers", competitions, overcrowded camping and a general county fair atmosphere... everything i love about climbing! don't hate me for being a cynic! oh, and are you sure parking is free? Is that just for the people not attending the festival, cuz usually its $3.

Is that just for the people not attending the festival, cuz usually its $3. It is actually a pretty cool festival. There are really not that big of crowds, except for on the easier lines in the Dihedrals, and Christian Brothers. The only thing parking is free for is if you just want to drive into the festival and look around. To park at the park, if you don't pay 40$ to park at the festival grounds, it is the typical State Park parking fee. It is a very cool festival, and a good thing to go check out.
