Does anyone know of any cheap, decent belay devices that will fit a 13mm rope without it being too much effort to pull the rope through (as it is with my current one)? I am in the UK if it matters to where you can get them.

Rack, munter, rescue 8, ID20, 540. If you are looking to belay with a 13mm rope you will most likely have to look at rescue equipment. Least expensive of all is a munter....but what are you doing with a 13mm rope.

First thought was figure-8 (rescue or otherwise), but as "Mean" asks, what are you doing with a 13mm rope?

OK thanks, I have a 13mm rope because thats the one I got hold of for free (I got 2 of them). I could buy another but its a new rope so don't want to waste it.

You could use a Petzl I'D L. It is specifically designed to be used on 11-13mm rope. However, it is not cheap. I would not buy one just to belay someone on TR. Just use a figure eight or a munther hitch.

You're gonna have a rough time trying to manage a belay with a 13mm rope. We went through this when I was on SAR and we were using 11mm. We had a difficult time getting them through various ATC style devices.

I agree with the others that it's either going to be a large 8 style device or you're into rescue gear which expensive.

You may have gotten the ropes for free, but you may well pay for it in the device.

Let us know what you decide to use.

After seeing how much this stuff costs I think I'll just buy another rope, I thought there might have been one like a normal belay device just bigger but it seems not. Not worth splashing out from top roping.

Thanks everyone.

If you go down to Southern Sandstone youŽll see a fair few people using thicker ropes for top-roping (up to 16mm) and they just waist belay like they have done for the last hundred years.
