How do you all feel about using your climbing helmet as a skiing helmet? I've got an Ecrin Roc. Think this is a bad idea? I don't plan on doing any crazy skiing/snowboarding. But snow can be pretty hard on the noggin. - John

I don't know about your specific brand of helmet, but climbing helmets are made to stop things from falling above. I have a skiing helmet, and it's made to wrap around your head, including the sides and back. So I would think climbing helmets don't work for skiing because you're most likely going to hit the back of your head, and climbing helmets don't really protect that well. I have however heard of multipurpose helmets--skiing, biking, etc. Anyone else?

so climbing helmets do not protect the back of your head? (sorry, don't have one) what happens if you fall and hit the back of your head on the rock, are you screwed? or can this even happen... Sorry, I am mainly a gym rat, and am trying to move outdoors heavily this summer, any help would be appreciated. Steve

A climbing helmet like the Erin Roc is an top impact helmet. It's meant to shield off falling objects kind of like a hard hat. Like they said it does'nt have any protection around the sides. You are more likely to to hit the sides of your head than the top in a ski wreck. Unless you plan on ramming trees head on. A cycling helmet, Kayking, or even a skateboarding helmet would be better. Or just buy a helmet for skiing. I hear they are quite warm. [ This Message was edited by: crackaddict on 2002-02-13 20:15 ]

Don't... the helmets for climbing are designed for climbing, not for skiing.

yup, your right leadingegde. Only use proper climbing equipment when climbing. Don't use anything else.
