Hello I’m looking into joining a Vancouver based climbing club. Just curious if anyone is a member of the ACC and/or BCMC who could shed some light on the difference between the two or let me know if there are any other clubs in the area. I’m already very active but am just looking to take things up a notch with experienced people. A causal atmosphere with a few younger people (I’m 28) would be perfect. Thanks Ian

My personal experience with the ACC has been less then positive. I suppose it all depends what your looking for, but the climbers in the ACC primarily comprise of a bunch of middle age soccer moms and has-been guys in the grips of their mid life crisis. If there’s any members in their 20's it’s a sure sign of a wanna be Mt Guide. Good Luck.

both clubs offer a variety of weekend and extended trips. often the clubs offer trips together. the acc is part of the larger canadian association and as such offers its members some other benefits like huts, international trips and guided expeditions. the bcmc also has huts but they are all unlocked afaik. the bcmc offers courses at very reasonable prices taught by its members. such as intro to rock climbing, anchors course, lead course, winter mountaineering, summer mountaineering (glacier travel and snow anchors), first aid (professionally taught), leadership courses. bcmc also does trail maintenance. both have monthly rags. the bcmc publishes a bi-annual magazine. acc has the annual canadian mag. both have monthly slide shows-free. the bcmc does alot of work in conservation and is involved in the lrmp process too. on trips members behave similarly. the organizers are not leaders and sometimes you may find decision making and group dynamics to be anywhere on the spectrum from fantastic to awful. low end trips (b2), tend to have lots of beginners and hopefully better organized. on harder trips (c3-4) be prepared to be very self sufficient. if you are off the back you may be forgotten. rock and ice climbing trips and wednesday evening climbing are more social and everyone has fun. the bcmc also climbs at cliffhangar vancouver on weds nite. just drop in. dinner and beer at the clubhouse after. not sure? join both. hope this helps

Jeff hit it bang on. ACC and BCMC apples and oranges. I have been on trips with both and it's alright most of the time.
